Irish Wolfhounds, Echo & Hooligan, in the Studio!

Monday, January 18th, 2016

I was so thrilled to meet Echo & Hooligan, two Irish Wolfhounds, for their photo session recently! These gentle giants are absolutely gorgeous dogs, and I have to be honest – I loved learning more about their breed from their mom, Karen! Irish Wolfhounds are an incredible, sweet breed with a long history, and as Karen has learned, when you walk around with two huge shaggy dogs, you start to become a breed ambassador for all the curious people you meet! They make quite an impression on their walks & outings, as you can probably imagine. (And trust me, if you & I have anything in common, you would stop everything you’re doing to meet these dogs if you saw them out & about!) So I was honored to be in their presence for a whole hour, haha – and we had a wonderful photo session together!

This is Hooligan, a five-year-old rescue – and this boy definitely has a mind of his own, haha! I really loved seeing his independent personality come through in the images.

And this is Echo! She’s about 1.5 years old, much younger than Hooligan – but her obedience & behavior are spectacular! She works closely with her mom in various competitions, and is amazingly responsive to her every move. (While still having a mind of her own, too, of course! That trait is pretty unanimous amongst Irish Wolfhounds!)

Oh these two. What a gorgeous pair.

Karen, thank you for introducing me to your two furry grandkids – and for the breed education along the way! I’m looking forward to seeing you again soon! :)

Louisa the Standard Poodle! (San Diego, CA)

Wednesday, December 30th, 2015

I have to admit, I thought I wouldn’t have any more photo sessions in 2015… but this one snuck up on me at the last minute, haha! In order to accommodate a tricky military travel schedule (which I totally sympathize with, since Mr. Shamrell used to be in the Navy) I managed to fit Louisa the standard poodle into my schedule this week! She’s a gorgeous dog, with the softest cream coloring and the sweetest disposition. And she even brought her brother, Brutus, for emotional support! Haha, just kidding – he made an appearance in a few photos as well – but since Brutus is the older of the two dogs, he’d already enjoyed a photo session a few years ago, back when they were stationed up in Monterey and he was an “only dog”. So our session, with the focus on Louisa, was intended to make sure neither dog felt there was any favoritism going on! :)  And Louisa wore the spotlight exceptionally well – this pup can pose like a pro! I think Brutus must have briefed her on a few tips beforehand? And honestly, with her sweet eyes, long legs & soft curly fur, it’s hard to take a bad picture of Louisa… so she was an absolute treat to have in front of my lens!

Louisa sometimes gets mistaken for a labradoodle, her parents told me… what do you think? Is she clearly a standard poodle, or would you be confused too?

Louisa has a really interesting personality: she’s brave yet cautious. She’s quick to follow in the footsteps of her brother when investigating new things, deferring to his elder wisdom, but she’s also very cheerful and fun-loving! Not to mention smart, too. (Is this starting to sound like a singles ad?)

This pair… stop it. Stop it right now. TOO CUTE.

Okay, one more… just because those long, poodle legs are gorgeous! I promise I didn’t stretch them out in Photoshop, they really are that long! And don’t you love their amazing colors?

Thanks for introducing me to your sweet pups, Andrea & Todd! See you after your travels! (And Go Irish!)

Penny the Rat Terrier! (Photo Session in San Diego, CA)

Thursday, November 19th, 2015

Oh my goodness, this little pup… she packs a lot of personality into a tiny little body! :)  Penny is a rat terrier, and if you’ve ever met one of these adorable dogs, you know how easy they are to love. Penny is no exception: she’s a total sweetheart, maybe a bit shy at first, and cautious of new things, but absolutely devoted to her mom, her toys, and to hunting small animals! Haha – Penny has the most adorable hobbies! But perhaps what I adore the most about this girl is the way she plays with her toys: she chews and tugs on them, just like most dogs, but then she throws them up in the air! She tosses them to herself! It’s amazing! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a dog play with toys the way Penny does… it’s like self-contained fetch! And it’s soooo cute! Her mom, Katie, mentioned that she sometimes feels like Penny would like a brother or sister… but then, watching her play with herself, she realizes that Penny doesn’t need another dog to keep her entertained! So she gets her socialization at the dog park, and that means she gets her mom allllll to herself at home! Haha! :)

We started our photo session in the studio, where the backdrops were an interesting new challenge for Penny to overcome.

Luckily, with a bit of distraction from some new favorite toys, Penny made herself right as home!

Then we headed outside to the park, where Penny kept strict watch for any small critters that might dare to show their face…

… but then we went to the BEACH! Where we saw BIRDS! And Penny turned on her rocket boosters!!

Thank you, Katie, for a super-fun afternoon! I can’t wait to show you the rest of our images – especially the ones with you & Penny together! :)

Aberdeen’s Second Photo Session! (Service Dog Photography, San Diego, CA)

Friday, November 6th, 2015

Seeing my past clients brightens my day, every time it happens! I love the families I get to work with on a daily basis, and I’m so lucky to call so many of them my friends now… running into them around town and at local events is so much fun. But when I get to see them again specifically for another photo session?! Oh my gosh, that’s icing on the cake!! So I was thrilled to book another photo session for the handsome Aberdeen, the CCI service dog! (Regular blog readers might remember his two sneak peeks from earlier this year, here and here!) This labrador/golden retriever pup is not only handsome, but absolutely devoted to his mom Patty – which I just can’t get enough of capturing. Their relationship is so beautiful – he’s there for her at every turn, always watchful and attentive… and yet his personality is so silly & goofy! I got to see both sides of Aberdeen during our studio photo session, during which he posed like a pro and somehow kept me laughing the entire time! Seriously, I could work with this dog every day and not get tired of it… his happiness is that infectious! :)

Here he is (in his favorite pose – relaxing!) on the white backdrop. He has a few more gray hairs than last time, and I think the white really brings them out! They’re a “distinguished gray”!

No photo session is complete without TREATS!

And lastly, Aberdeen wanted to bring out his formal attire on the gray backdrop! Eeeeek! Doesn’t he look soooo handsome?!

Patty, Aberdeen is one of those dogs that I just can’t get enough of! It was so great to see both of you again! Can’t wait to get together again soon! :)

Riley the Border Collie / Husky Mix, in San Diego!

Sunday, October 18th, 2015

Let’s be honest: I work with a lot of beautiful dogs. I get to meet big, handsome, regal dogs, as well as cute little puppies – I suppose I’m spoiled that way! And while I’ve never met a dog that I would consider “ugly”, I’ll admit that some dogs are just a little bit more good-looking than others… and Riley is definitely one of those extra-gorgeous pups!

Riley is a border collie & husky mix, an interesting combination of breeds that came together in a stunning way. His coat is a fascinating mix of black & white, and while the border collie is obvious on his handsome, narrow face, Riley’s fluffy tail is 100% husky! All in all, he’s a beautiful boy, and his parents have gotten so many compliments from strangers that it’s now a regular occurrence for them to hear people say “what a cute dog” anywhere around town! And fittingly, Riley’s personality is just as beautiful: he’s a happy, content pup who absolutely loves to be around his parents. He always wants to be on the move, from one place to another, but he never ends up exploring very far away from his mom & dad. I loved working with him (despite the fact that he totally snubbed my treats!), and the opinionated way in which he told us exactly what he wanted to do kept me laughing for our entire session!

We started our photo session on the white studio backdrop! I love how his features pop out in this setting!

After a while, we switched to the gray backdrop, but Riley soon decided he was ready to head to our next location…

… the park! I love the contrast of his black & white fur against the rich, warm colors of Presidio Park!

And I’ll share another photo with you, just because it made quite a splash on the Facebook page! I posted a quick iPhone photo of the back of my camera, right after our photo session ended, since I knew this would be an epic photo when I took it! Here’s the edited version (where you can actually see Riley’s face, haha!)

Mackenzie & Jonas, thank you for introducing me to your sweet boy! I’m so excited to show you the rest of our photos soon! :)
