Dog Photography: Two Senior Dachshunds, Daphne & Agnes

Sunday, March 3rd, 2013

I have the pleasure of introducing you to the cutest, littlest grey-faced dogs I’ve met in a long time! This is Agnes and Daphne, and I’m honored that they (and their mom) came all the way from Panama City to have their session! They kept us laughing throughout their session – and whether it was Agnes’ little bow-legs or Daphne’s desire – no, NEED – to investigate the intriguing back room of my studio… I just adore these dogs.

This is Agnes! She was adopted not too long ago, and her mom adjusted her given name from Aggie (couldn’t have that, as an Alabama fan!) to Agnes.

And this is Daphne, who holds a very special place in her mom’s heart – and on her foot! How cool is her tattooed paw print?!

They make an adorable pair, don’t you think?

And finally, an early favorite of mine after giving all the photos a once-over. What lovely emotion in this photo. Session with dogs (especially doxies!) don’t always go as planned… especially when we visit public parks with squirrels and all sorts of interesting distractions… so it’s a good thing my clients are great at rolling with the punches!

Thanks for an absolutely fabulous afternoon, Stacy! Can’t wait to see you all again (very) soon!

A Slightly Crazy Session: Louie, Bitsy, Reese & Blackie

Monday, February 4th, 2013

This was… ahem… an eventful session! Don’t get me wrong – it was lots of fun, the dogs were total sweethearts, and their parents are wonderful people! – but a few road bumps near the beginning of our session made for slightly slow-going at first. In fact, the issues were pretty unpredictable, and Cheri & Jim (the dogs’ parents) were nice enough to send me an email after the session which read:

Hi Allison! We figured out that you would probably add a few questions to your questionnaire after today:

1. Does your dog have any type of training at all?  Any? Obedience? Potty? Leash? Anything?

2. Is your dog likely to pee/poop/vomit in my studio?

3. Is there any chance that all of your dogs will be able to pull out of their collars at once on a busy street in downtown Pensacola?

4. Will your dogs ever look at a camera, for any reason?

5. If not, do you mind having hundreds of photos of your dogs asses?

Haha! I love it when my clients have a sense of humor! Yes, our session was chaotic, the dogs’ strong suit was not obedience, and we used up our fair share of paper towels. But Cheri & Jim, I think you’ll be in for a surprise when you see the photos we still (somehow) managed to get!

This is Louie, in the foreground. He’s a rescue from a puppy mill, and has the notch in his ear to prove it, poor thing. But with Cheri & Jim, he’s learning how to be a dog and not just a breeding machine. Thank goodness they saved him – look at that sweet face!

This is Bitsy, an old chihuahua whom Cheri & Jim found on the streets. Her cataract remains, but she used to be in much worse shape: thoroughly flea-ridden and diseased. They nursed her back to health and now she’s a happy (if slow-moving) member of their family!

Here’s Reese, a cute girl who seriously knew how to work the camera! Her back legs don’t work so well, but she tries not to let that slow her down at all – she is such a sweetheart, and a kisser too!

Last but certainly not least is Blackie, the doxie-beagle mix. Can you believe that he used to have a wheelchair for his back legs? We brought him to the beach, and suddenly he was zooming around everywhere! The boy loves the sand, I guess!

Cheri & Jim’s house has been dubbed The Isle of Misfit Toys, because each of their dogs comes from unfortunate circumstances, and some still bear the scars of their past lives. But together, they make an incredibly beautiful family, inside & out. Thank you so much for allowing me to meet your pack – and Happy Birthday, Jim! :) I can’t wait to see you both again soon!

Studio Session for 2 (of 6!) Dogs: Skye & Emma

Monday, January 14th, 2013

This session starts with a story! I’m currently working with a lovely veterinary clinic in Gulf Breeze to decorate their front lobby/waiting area, and a few weeks ago, one of the vets asks if he can purchase one of my gift certificates as a Christmas present for a client of his. Of course, I say! So I send him the gift certificate, head off to Christmas break, and don’t think about it again until I’m back in town again in January and working through my to-do list (which is so long it isn’t even funny)… anyways, at that time I get a random phone call from one of my VERY FIRST clients, an absolutely wonderful woman named Teri! Several of my clients call to catch up every now and again, see if the Navy has sent my husband and I out of the area yet, or tell me about dog- or photography-related news or events they think I’ll find interesting. One of the last times I saw Teri, she recommended Inside of A Dog, an absolutely fascinating book about how a dog thinks & experiences the world (which I highly recommend)! So we begin to catch up and I start wondering what book she’s going to suggest to me now… aaaand you’ve probably guessed the end of this story: Teri got the gift certificate from the vet! Ha! I love how life comes full circle like that! :)

It turned out to be perfect timing, too, because Teri & her husband had recently acquired a new dog, Skye. So they brought Skye into my studio, along with Emma, a Cairn terrier mix. I met Emma at our session two years ago, but she was a tiny puppy at that point, and I was shocked to see how much she’d grown and filled out since then! I absolutely relished the chance to spend more time with this family, and now after two sessions, we’re going to plan the best gallery wall display that’ll show off images of each of their six dogs!

I love Skye’s rare red coloring – and look at those EYES! Teri & Danny, it was a pleasure, as always! I’ll see you again soon!

Oh, one more thing: I didn’t have time to go digging through my archives today, but keep tabs on the Facebook page this week! I’ll post a photo of Emma two years ago next to one of her recent images! I bet you’ll be surprised at how she looked as a puppy!

Rescued Dogs from Afghanistan

Friday, December 14th, 2012

The dogs in these photos have a long & fascinating story, and it’s simply too much for me to tell in one little Sneak Peek post! Rest assured, I’ll spill all the details soon enough. But for now, I’m going to whet your appetite with one simple fact: the white dogs in these photos were rescued from Afghanistan. I’m so honored to know these pups and their awesome parents; I’ll write a longer blog post all about them next month, after my little Christmas vacation and after their parents have had a chance to see ALL the photos from our session. But I’m very excited to introduce you to Siena, Olive, and their American-grown brother Gabe! :)

This is Olive, an Afghan puppy that I met a few months ago – I think she was half the size she is now! She’s always on the go and super-curious about pretty much everything.

Sometimes she tires herself out and crashes on the couch… for about five whole minutes.

This is Siena, Olive’s biological mother. She’s very sweet, and much more calm than her daughter! Look at those EYES!

Last but certainly not least, this is Gabe! You could say he was their ambassador to American living, haha… they all get along great!

That’s it for now… I can’t wait to share more of their photos with you! Especially after our trip to the beach! :) Thanks for reading!

Dachshund Studio Photo Session

Monday, November 12th, 2012

Despite a few scheduling difficulties, I was thrilled to be able to get together with Gus and Leo (both dachshunds) this past Saturday!  Their mom brought plenty of props to get us in the Christmas spirit, and Gus & Leo were surprisingly willing participants for each new hat, sweater & collar combo!

Gus is the older boy; he’s 4 years old and has short brown hair. Leo is the puppy at one year old, a blonde longhaired dachshund – and I think he almost looks like a miniature golden retriever! Enjoy these few photos of both handsome boys!

To start out, Rudolph joined us for a few photos…

Gus is very comfortable when he’s in dad Evan’s lap!

I showed Gus & Leo’s mom my new backdrop… and she loved it! So we took a bunch of photos with this fun, vintage-modern backdrop!

The boys couldn’t resist showing off for us.

Thanks for making the trip out from Panama City Beach, Emily & Evan! It was so much fun to meet you & the pups – I can’t wait to see you again soon!
