One-Year Anniversary Celebration of the San Diego Studio!

Sunday, June 15th, 2014

Hooray! I’m so excited! Today (June 15, 2014) is the one-year anniversary celebration of signing the lease and getting the keys to 3251 Adams Avenue, the location that I picked for my studio here in San Diego!  I can hardly believe it’s been a whole year of living & doing business in America’s Finest City… and honestly, compared to this moment last year, it feels like a lot has changed. I actually have friends in town, haha (we moved here without knowing anyone!), I have an employee (yay for Haley!), and an entirely new marketing plan for this changing & growing business. Sometimes it’s easy to look back and only see the challenges that I’ve faced along the way – because it hasn’t been an easy ride – but there have been lots of little victories too! And today is for celebrating those moments and clients that have been the inspiration behind Allison Shamrell Pet Photography‘s first year in San Diego!

First things first: the prizes up for grabs! I have First Place, Second Place and Third Place goodies for a few very lucky winners! Drumroll please…

anniversary celebration grand prize

This is The Beagle Package, as outlined on the main website, and the only “catch” is that it has to take place in the Embarcadero, just south of Seaport Village! This is a location that I’ve been dying to photograph ever since moving here and seeing it for the first time – the well-kept grass, the big old trees, the striking city skyline in the background – I think it’ll be an incredibly dynamic place for a session, so I’m treating one lucky first-place winner and their dog(s) to this $175 value!

(This session covers one hour of session time & up to two dogs. More dogs and/or time can be added on for an additional fee.)

And the next prize…

This is another BIG prize, and it’s for TWO winners! It brings the cost of The Beagle Package down to just $75, for example… or you can spend it on products after your Dalmatian Package, which already comes with $100 in print credit, for a total product credit of $200! And with this, you’ll have the flexibility to go anywhere in San Diego for your session – whether you’d prefer your house, my studio, your dog’s favorite park, or anywhere in between. If you met me at the big San Diego Humane Society Walk for Animals event a few weeks ago, you know this is the same prize that a lucky drawing winner scored that day!

And the final prize…

anniversary third place prize

This is a lovely fine art print, 8×10″ in size, that’s mounted to styrene (a firm, acid-free backing material) that helps the print stay strong & flat. The styrene adds thickness, so you can either place this print in a frame, or prop it up on an easel for even simpler display! Either way, it’s a beautiful piece with the quote “Dogs are not our whole lives, but they make our lives whole” by Roger Caras. And guess what: the design will be revealed on the Facebook page tomorrow, so be sure to “like” the page to see the finished piece! THREE people can win this prize!

Here’s how to enter:

Simply leave a comment on this blog post with your name, your pet’s name(s), their breed(s), and why you want to win!

Win a bonus entry by sharing this blog post on Facebook, too! Just leave a separate comment saying that you did so.

The final drawing will happen on Tuesday, June 17 at 5:00 pm, and winners will be contacted via email.

Good luck!

In addition to planning this giveaway, I’ve been reflecting a bit, too. Back when I first got the keys to the studio, I wrote a blog post which you can see here about how excited I was for the future, and everything else I was going through. Part of that post says:

I’m feeling a lot of different emotions right now – probably what every photographer that’s opened a studio goes through. I’m scared the space won’t live up to the ideas I have in my head if I can’t decorate it well enough. I’m scared for my upcoming bill at Home Depot. I’m scared that the investment will start to weigh on me. I’m scared of a break-in. But at the same time, I’m so excited to have a space in the community where I can invite people, clients & dogs over! I’m excited to be able to simply say, yes, I have a studio! I’m excited to decorate & design it, and I’m excited to have a place that can do everything I need it for: client meetings, shoots, ordering sessions, etc. Honestly, I’m a little bit excited to separate my business life from my personal life, because – not gonna lie – my time-management skills could use a bit of work (coughfacebookcough) and I think having limited access to my files at home might be just the push I need to be as productive as possible while working.

Looking back, I’m happy to say that the studio has lived up to the ideas I had in my head. The investment was a big one, and my Home Depot bills certainly added up, but all the progress slowly came to a close, and now I’m proud for my clients to visit my San Diego studio on a daily basis. Not to mention – I’ve met some incredible pets and seen some great photo sessions happen here! Check out just a few of the animals I’ve worked with this year, in & out of the studio:

So of course, there’s no other way I can finish this blog post than by profusely thanking the clients that I’ve had the pleasure of meeting this past year. There would be no anniversary celebration without you. Thank you – each of you – for everything, because while I feel honored to have given you memories & artwork of your family, I feel like you’ve given me so much more. Thank you.

Studio Pet Photography Session with Cleo & Tucker!

Friday, May 30th, 2014

I enjoyed a wonderful studio pet photography session with two mixed-breed dogs, Cleo & Tucker! Cleo is a terrier mix, and her mom thinks she has Toy Fox terrier and rat terrier in her heritage. Tucker, her brother, is a chihuahua mix – and has the big ears to prove it! Both of these dogs have somewhat nervous personalities, so we spent a bit of time warming up to the studio environment – but in fact, they had already visited a few days ago for their Pre-Session Consultation, so they were already familiar with the studio – and I think that definitely helped their comfort level! Cleo is more timid, between the two of them, but you should have seen the way she opened up when we brought out her tennis ball! She went from tiptoeing around the studio to running and crashing back & forth in pursuit of her ball! It was hilarious to see! Tucker, on the other hand, is a total mama’s boy, and getting him out from behind mom’s shadow was a challenge all of its own… but when he realized all the attention was on him, he posed like a champ!

Here are the dogs: Cleo on the left, Tucker on the right!

At the end of the day, both dogs are completely devoted to their mom, Robbi. It’s a beautiful thing to see.

Thanks for a fabulous studio pet photography session, Robbi! I hope the dogs have “recovered” from all the activity by now, haha! Can’t wait to see you again soon!

Belgian Malinois Photos in the Studio: Ele!

Saturday, May 17th, 2014

I absolutely loved this recent session – and not only because it featured a gorgeous Belgian Malinois! This is a relatively rare breed, which has only recently gained popularity due to the role many of them have played in the military. But beyond the intense working-dog attitude and impressive physical strength, underneath it all, these dogs are just like any other breed: loving, happy pups who are absolutely devoted to their families!

Ele’s story, though, has a not-very-happy beginning. Her parents don’t know exactly what happened to her (they rescued her at six months old), but she’s had an intense struggle with the fear of people. They told me the jaw-dropping fact that Ele was too scared to be in the same room with them for the first two years after they adopted her! I don’t even want to think about what must have happened to instill so much fear in her heart… sigh. And as she nervously tiptoed into my studio, it was clear that she was scared. So this session turned into a prime example of how I let the dog control the pace of the shoot; Ele needed to work slowly and take several breaks, so that’s exactly what we did. And even though she never let me touch her, she let me see her absolutely gorgeous smile! I really enjoyed coaxing Miss Ele out of her shell, and I think these images (as well as many more from our session) are prime examples of why working with a pet photographer who truly knows pets makes such a big difference in both the experience and the final images. From these images, you’d never guess at Ele’s shady past – I think you simply see a beautiful dog that’s surrounded by the love of her parents. Which is exactly what Ele is.

Here she is! Don’t you love her big grin? And that incessantly floppy ear?!

Those big eyes kill me! What a sweet face…

In addition to plenty of happy Belgian Malinois photos, we saw a bit of Ele’s “serious face” for a few frames too…

Ele’s parents are also the owners of Hairy & Merry, Little Italy’s newest pet boutique! You simply must stop in and take a look around – they offer a full line of nutrition for cats & dogs, grooming and self-wash, and even daycare & boarding! Your dog can be social, clean & well-fed all in one visit, haha! My Bailey even experienced her very first self-wash in one of their new tubs last week. I simply can’t recommend their shop highly enough; it’s a fabulous and much-needed addition to the San Diego Little Italy neighborhood! You can also find their Facebook page here and their Pinterest here.

Sumrall & Chris, I had a wonderful time working and talking shop with you both! I can’t wait for our upcoming “project” to eventually take shape, too! :)

Studio Pet Photography for Dogs & Cats – Featuring the Animals of La Jolla Colony Vet Hospital!

Tuesday, May 6th, 2014

This studio pet photography session had its beginnings a few weeks ago, at the Helen Woodward Animal Center Puppy Love 5k event… I was chatting with many of the runners & walkers as they came back from the race, and a woman with an adorable, border-collie-mix dog walks up to my booth! I came out from behind my table to meet her dog, we get to talking, and eventually she introduces herself as a veterinarian and the new owner of La Jolla Colony Veterinary Hospital! She asked me about working together on some new decor for her clinic’s lobby, and of course I was happy to oblige! I absolutely love working with local businesses, and if I can give fellow entrepreneurs a few pieces of art that makes them love their business just a little bit more – especially if it features their own pets! – then I consider it a match made in heaven! :)

So imagine my surprise when she told me that I wouldn’t just be working with her border collie mix, Mony – but also with her terrier mix dog and her two cats! Cats in the studio?! That’s only happened a few times before, with – ahem – mixed results, so I knew this would be a verrrrry interesting session! Let me introduce you to the stars of the show…

This is Mony (left) and Daisy Mae (right)! Mony is a border collie/spaniel mix, and Daisy is… well… a big question mark! She has terrier in her heritage, that’s for sure, but after that your guess is as good as mine. Mony is 5 and Daisy is 10, but both have the energy level of a 1-year-old! I just love these two!

And here are the brave felines that came along, too! Just wait until you hear their names – and I don’t mind telling you, since their mom is a vet and you know she loves them very much (even if their names don’t exactly suggest that they’re beloved members of the family): Booger & Skidmark! Haha!! I laughed out loud when I heard that! Even more interesting: you’d never guess it from their photos, but these kitties are actually littermates! Despite their hesitance, I really enjoyed working with them both – we put the “pet” in studio pet photography session, rather than giving all the attention to their canine siblings… cats deserve their time in the studio, too!

Sarah & Ben, I loved getting together with you both – thank you for bringing everyone in to the studio (I know it wasn’t easy)! I can’t wait to see these fluffy faces on the walls of your new clinic! :)

I’m Going to TWO Photography Conferences in the Next Two Weeks!

Friday, February 21st, 2014

Oh my goodness – I’m so excited for the next two weeks of my life! That’s because I’m going to spend almost each day learning & getting Great-Dane-sized doses of inspiration from some of the world’s best photographers – at not one, but two professional photography conferences!

That’s right – conferences, for photographers like me! Because as it turns out, running a photography business doesn’t mean that all I do is just take pictures all day! Haha! No, it’s much more than that (unfortunately & fortunately, depending on the day). As my fellow entrepreneurs know, owning a business means wearing many hats: I do accounting, marketing, product design, client communication, advertising and networking every day – not to mention maintain a commercial studio space. Oh, and sometimes I get to take photos, too! :)  So these conferences are all about education & inspiration for the business and photography sides of the photography business!

The first conference is called United. It’s a relatively small gathering (just several hundred of us) taking place in Santa Barbara, CA, and I’ve never attended it before – so I’m definitely excited to meet a bunch of new people & see what United is all about! I hear they’ll keep us really busy – as in, shoots starting at sunrise, fun classes & seminars all day, and impromptu shoots & talks going until as late as 10 pm! Whew! I think 3 days of that schedule is about all I can handle, haha – thank goodness it’s not any longer or else I’d run the danger of being “that kid” caught sleeping in class! :)

The second conference I’m attending is called Wedding & Portrait Photographers International (WPPI), and it’s happening in Las Vegas, baby! :)  I went to WPPI last year too, and well, to call it “mind-blowing” is an understatement. I learned sooooo many ways to run smoother business operations & serve my clients better! And at this conference, in addition to lots of great classes, is the world’s largest photography trade show. The expo is epic; a madhouse taking up the space of several football fields with booths from literally hundreds of companies like labs, software makers, and equipment suppliers (like Canon, for example) will be there to answer my questions! So. darn. awesome. And – really the best part about this conference – my hubby gets to join me this year!! Since San Diego is a quick drive from Vegas, Mr. Shamrell is hopping in the car with me so we can take it all in together! He’s not my employee per se, but I consider him my business partner and don’t make any big decisions without consulting his input first, so having him there with me will be simply fantastic. (I may or may not already have a color-coded schedule, divvying-up the classes we’ll attend together and the one’s I’m deploying him to so he can take notes for me. Just saying.)

Here are a few iPhone photos of last year’s expo:

20140204-082924.jpg  20140204-083126.jpg

As a pet photographer, I’ll definitely be in the minority at both conferences. (Like… by a lot.) There just aren’t nearly as many pet photographers as there are wedding, family, baby & senior high school photographers. Even boudoir & maternity photographers, too. And that’s okay! I’m part of a quickly-growing industry and I’m thrilled to be at the forefront of that growth. So as it turns out, none of the classes I’m attending are actually geared towards pet photography, but that’s okay – there’s so much to learn from other industries. I’ve learned tips from practically every other genre of photography; just because there’s not a dog in front of someone’s camera doesn’t mean they have nothing to teach me. All the photographers I’ll be learning from run their own studios in addition to taking time out to educate other photographers; they’re such an inspiration & I can’t wait for everything to start! (Haha can you tell I’m beyond excited?!)

Here’s a quick list of classes I already know I’ll be attending:

~ Perfect Studio Design: Designing a Creatively Inspired Home Studio or Gallery Space You and Your Clients Will Love

~ Explode Your Business by Spoiling Your Clients

~ Create Community Instead of Customers

~ #marketingswagger

~ The Business of Being You

Oh man. Even just typing those class titles makes me a little bit giddy.

20140204-083049.jpg

I’m not exaggerating when I say that literally every part of my business improves when I attend a conference, as I have for each of the past 3 years. And this year I’m so lucky to be able to attend two conferences! They’re not cheap – in fact, they’re a significant part of my yearly budget – but they’re an investment I don’t question. I know great things are in Allison Shamrell Photography, Inc.‘s future!

Check out the Facebook page and my Instagram account for updates from the road! Like & follow them both to catch all the action! I’ll post photos, thoughts, maybe some notes from classes – and I might even let you know my luck at the blackjack tables.  :)

And if you know the best places/attractions to visit in Vegas, please leave a comment & let me know! We’re open to any/all suggestions. (Especially if they’re regarding buffets…)

Cheers – to two straight weeks of education, development & fun! Thanks for joining me here on the blog!
