Turbo, the San Diego Pomeranian Mix, in the Studio

Friday, October 17th, 2014

I can’t wait to introduce you to this pup – she is just the cutest!! Turbo is a San Diego pomeranian & lhasa apso mix, and she recently visited the studio for a custom photo session. This girl has tons of personality – she loves to play & jump around with her mom! (Or in other words, live up to her name! haha!)  I just love her cute little pomeranian face; plus, her coloring is so interesting! Black & tan is a rare combination for pomeranians, and even more so for lhasa apsos, which means Turbo is definitely one of a kind. Her parents rescued her earlier this year, and they told me about an incredible coincidence: on the very same day that their previous dog (a cocker spaniel) passed away, leaving them heartbroken, the rescue organization found Turbo. Can you believe it? The very same day! Maybe it wasn’t a coincidence; maybe it was more of a sign that Turbo was meant to fill the gap left by her predecessor. Who knows. For me, it calls to mind this quote from Erica Jong: “Dogs come into our lives to teach us about love… they depart to teach us about loss. A new dog never replaces an old dog; it merely expands the heart. If you have loved many dogs, your heart is very big.” So, so true.

This is Turbo! See what I mean? She’s adorable!

Oh, that face… so much attitude. :)

And I have to tell you about her tail! It’s an explosion of fur! It looks like a firework, or a just-popped-open champagne bottle, or a pom-pom… it’s unlike any tail I’ve ever seen on another dog!

Marjorie, thank you for introducing me to your beautiful little girl! I’m excited to show you the rest of our photos very soon!

Studio Dog Photos of Nina & Toby in San Diego, CA

Thursday, September 18th, 2014

I’ve always loved the way dogs look up at their owners. I adore the happy, loving look in a dog’s eyes as they keep an eye on their mom or dad, checking to make sure that everything is okay, and letting them know that they’re ready to play at a moment’s notice. That joyful glow somehow reveals their boundless trust and devotion. Sometimes all I have to do is look down at my Bailey, and she starts wagging her tail…

This sneak peek of Nina & Toby’s photo session includes two photos featuring “the look”. Nina & Toby are great dogs – happy, confident pooches with exuberant energy – and I got to see all sides of their personalities during their time in the studio. They didn’t “sit” or “stay” every time we asked them to (although they had much more obedience under their belts than the average dog, that’s for sure!), but I noticed that they were constantly looking to their parents for guidance & love. And honestly, if they didn’t listen to a command, it was only to come wiggling over to their parents for pets & attention! So I think two of my favorite images from their session are moments in which they had that look in their eyes; the look of wanting to please and wanting to love, the look of dogged devotion. And I just can’t get enough of it!

This is Toby, the younger & more free-spirited of the two. He’s a lab mix, with an intriguing coat that seems to be halfway between brown & black… and of course that big lab grin!

And this is Nina, a gorgeous German shepherd girl – and let me tell you, my camera loves her! Aren’t shepherds beautiful?!

We spent a bit of time on the white and the gray backdrops… and honestly, I’m not sure which “look” I like better! Every studio dog photography session client has their choice of white, gray & black backdrops, and we’ll often switch halfway through the session for an interesting variety of final images. Nina & Toby look good everywhere, apparently! :)

Elyse & Obed, I had a wonderful time with all four of you! Can’t wait to see you again soon! :)

Vizsla Photography in Alpine, CA

Sunday, June 29th, 2014

I braced myself as I pulled up the driveway in Alpine, CA. “Allison,” I said to myself, “you have a session with four vizslas today. Four of what’s probably the highest-energy breed of dog. You will be tired at the end of the day. Actually, no, you will be exhausted. But that’s why you just had an energy drink. These dogs might run you into the ground – but it’s okay, they’re going to be adorable. Just keep getting up off the ground every time you get tackled.” And so I marched into their house with that determined attitude – and promptly melted into a puddle when I saw two litters of two-week-old puppies. Gahhhh!

My recent session with Vistercil’s Vizslas could simply not have been more fun – or more exhausting, haha! I worked with four dogs: Ruger the old man, Juneau the 5-year-old, Newman the 4-month-old, and Walter the way-too-cute-13-week-old puppy. Our photo session started at their house in Alpine, where I also met the litters of puppies, and then we headed into town for some studio photos! And as much as I advocate for rescue groups, and firmly believe that you can find a spectacular dog at your local shelter, I also know that there’s also an important & invaluable place in our communities for responsible breeding, too. Carrying on the legacy of a breed for future generations is a huge task, and I always enjoy meeting high-quality breeders – and I can definitely say that Peggy & Chuck are wonderful people who raise & care for some incredible & gorgeous dogs (like Prim & Track, for example)!

Here’s old man Ruger! He keeps a watchful eye over the young pups.

Next-oldest is Juneau; and boy is he handsome or what?

Newman, at four months old, is simply a bundle of energy! This was a rare calm moment – he was happier and more often found bounding in all directions across the yard!

Before leaving the house, I made sure to meet Marley the Bengal cat. I think he tried to hide behind the bush from me… I see you, Marley.

And lastly, Walter the 13-week-old puppy turned out to be such a pro at posing that, well, he can do it in his sleep. :)

Peggy & Chuck, thank you for all your invaluable help during our photo session! Working with vizslas is no joke… I’m so happy to have met you and all your dogs! Can’t wait to see you both again soon!

Corgi Photography Session with Annabel in Chula Vista, CA

Wednesday, June 25th, 2014

Oh my goodness. This dog. Where do I begin?

I love working with puppies of any breed, and although Annabel the corgi celebrated her first birthday recently (complete with a birthday cupcake!), I think 1-year-old dogs still count as puppies, don’t you? (Heck, my Bailey is 5 years old and I call her a puppy every day!) So when I heard from Annabel’s parents about the opportunity to do not only a puppy photography session, but a corgi photography session, I just about jumped out of my chair! I absolutely love corgis and their relentless happiness; they’re wonderful dogs and their short little legs always make me smile! Annabel is a lovely little brindle-and-white-colored lady who lives with her parents in Chula Vista. She enjoys super-healthy dried treats (like chicken and sweet potato), meeting and making friends with everyone she possibly can, and running around her backyard like crazy! Seriously, this dog is one of the sweetest pups I’ve ever met… I’m honored to introduce you to her!

We started our session in the studio in San Diego… don’t you love her smile and big fluffy tail?

Then we headed to her house in Chula Vista, where she showed me how cute she looks on all the furniture, especially mom & dad’s bed. But her goofy mood struck outside on the grass – I adore her pose on the left just as much as the “outtake” on the right, haha! Corgi photography comes with its fair share of silliness, that’s for sure!

And finally, it was off to Bayside Park to run around on the sand, pose like a champ, and finally watch the sun set.

Thank you for a delightful session, Jim & Margaret! Annabel is so darn cute that I have a feeling I won’t be able to resist posting a photo or two to the Facebook page before we can get together again… so you might want to keep an eye out! :)

Puppy Photography Session in Carlsbad, CA with Lily the Terrier Mix

Saturday, June 21st, 2014

Have you ever met a puppy with an old soul? Well I have, and boy did we share an incredible puppy photography session together! Lily the terrier mix is one year old (going on about 12, I think!), and during our photo session she showed me every side of her personality; I saw her puppy curiosity, her snuggly love for her parents, her beautifully stoic seriousness, her goofy run-in-circles-until-I-drop silliness, and finally, a bit of her don’t-take-any-more-pictures-of-me stubbornness! Haha! Lily gave me different expressions in practically every frame I shot, and I’m so excited to dig deeper into her photos and bring out the very best of the best of her sweet brown eyes and scruffy fur. But for now, I just have a sneak peek for you to see, with some of my standout favorite images. But don’t worry – it’s a big one! This session was actually spread out over two days (since puppy attention spans can only last so long), so this is an extra-big sneak peek for her parents. Plus, I’m excited to say that I’ll be seeing Lily again in a few months for a fresh set of puppy photography images to add to this one! So let me introduce you to the cutest little terrier mix with an adorably off-kilter floppy ear!

Can you even handle the cuteness?! That ear is just too much for me!

Whether she was running across the open grass or over the rungs of her agility equipment, Lily gave us more than our fair share of action photos! I think she might have rocket boosters strapped to her feet, just out of sight…

She’s friends with everyone she meets, human or canine… the world is her oyster. Of friendship, of course.

Lily loooooves to hunt geckos! Her terrier heritage really comes out when she’s in the fields of Carlsbad, nose to the ground…

We also spent some relaxing time at home… oh those eyes. Stop it right now. What a snugglebug!

And then Lily came all the way down from Carlsbad to the San Diego studio! I just love the way this little lady steps out.

She looks great on white, gray and black backdrops! I can’t decide which I like better… but I think I’ll keep the black background a surprise for later! :) Here she is, striking a pose on the gray – which really brings out the warm tones in her fur!

Lily, thank you for having the sweetest, biggest eyes and ears that are such a joy to photograph! Starr & John, thank you for an absolutely fabulous couple of afternoons… I can’t tell you how excited I am to visit more locations with you & Lily again in the future! :)
