Bono, Patriot & Archie in Del Mar! (Emergency Pet Photo Session)

Friday, June 10th, 2016

Bono the dog is a total sweetheart, a put bull with a huge smile and gorgeous brindle fur. I absolutely loved meeting him and working with him. So although it’s not too often that I schedule an emergency pet photo session, it breaks my heart that I had to do it for sweet, happy Bono.

I use the term “emergency” because my calendar typically books up about 1-2 months in advance with photo sessions. Which is great, from a business perspective – I love keeping busy! – but it’s not so great when someone has just received a terminal diagnosis from their vet clinic. Bono may not have that much longer with his family, and I hope that the vet’s predictions are entirely wrong and he still has many happy years left! But just in case his doctor isn’t wrong, his mom wanted to safe rather than sorry, and filled me in on Bono’s situation. So we were able to schedule our photo session just a week after chatting for the first time, and I got to meet Bono – and his canine brothers too! We had a fun, relaxed photo session and didn’t push any of the dogs too hard (Patriot the pittie is on the older side, and Archie the pit/Basenji mix prefers to relax, not run around). So it was a fun, leisurely time and I’m just so thankful that we were able to get together so quickly. Because I wouldn’t want to miss out on any time with Bono and his brothers.

This is Bono! Despite his medical issues, he’s feeling good and keeps a smile on his face! Isn’t the canine spirit amazing?

This is Archie, the dog who goes down playground slides! He’s also close with his human sister, and it was so much fun to see them interact & play with each other.

Last but certainly not least, this is Patriot. He’s a soulful old pup, and more than happy to just sit back and watch the action unfold around him. Unless he sees another dog, of course – then he’s off to go say hello!

Best of 2015 – San Diego Pet Photography

Sunday, January 24th, 2016

Are you ready for this? I cannot WAIT to share these images with you!  :)  :)

2015 was an incredible year for my business: I met incredible people, fantastic dogs, and had a BLAST doing what I absolutely love to do! I’ll always be able to look back on 2015 with a big smile on my face, because although it had its ups and downs (just like any year), I have to admit that there were way more “ups” and happy times than anything else. So of course I couldn’t properly say goodbye to one of the most amazing years of my life without a “Best of” blog post – because I want to share a tiny fraction of how GREAT this year was with you! So I really feel like this blog post contains a piece of my heart… not to wax poetic, but the people and dogs in these photos really do mean the world to me, and I’ll always be grateful that we crossed paths in 2015. Did all these sessions go 100% smoothly? Nope! (Hello rain delays!) Did all these dogs really love being in front of the camera? Definitely not! (Some adored being the center of attention, and some definitely took some warming up!) But I think we still ended up with spectacular results from each & every session, and to me, that’s the most important thing, because then my clients can walk away happy. And I think they all did! :)

So here are all the pets I photographed in full-length photo sessions in 2015. I picked out my 3 favorite images from each session – not the easiest thing to do!! – and for the sake of simplicity, I refrained from sharing the details of each pet’s story here, but you can always search the blog for details on any pet if you’re curious.

Dippy, Lulu & Bentley – Rescue Dogs in San Diego, CA

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2015

Well I have to admit, I have a bit of a soft spot for this photo session… because it was my last one of 2015! And what a way to end this incredible year: with three adorable, full-of-personality dogs! This awesome little pack lives with their parents in the Kensington neighborhood of San Diego – just down the street from my studio – and we traveled to three very distinct parts of the city for our photo session! We started in the studio, then headed out to a local park, and then finished up at the beach – but I have to admit, the images from the park are a few of my early favorites as I’ve started to go through all the photos from the day, so their sneak peek is going to be park-exclusive! :)  I’m so excited to introduce you to these wonderful pups – all of whom are rescue dogs in San Diego!

This is Dippy, a serious contender for dog-with-the-cutest-name-ever. She enjoys her frisbee (as you can see), treats, and generally playing hard to get… let me tell you, this dog’s affection is hard-earned! She has the funniest “side-eye” look that she gives most people that try to get her attention (including me, and her mom) as if to say, “what are you doing?” I can’t quite put my finger on it, but Dippy seems to have a very keen understanding of what goes on around her… she’s so aware & in the moment!

san diego dog rescue

Lulu is a cockapoo – and don’t let her adorable little face fool you, she’s a coyote fighter! That’s right! Her mom told me the most incredible story of how she literally fought off a coyote at a dog park one day! As a result of the incident, her neck isn’t in the best shape anymore, but overall she’s a healthy, happy (and surprisingly fierce!) dog! I didn’t see any of her ferocious spirit, but I did get to witness her beautiful zest for life and sheer contentedness when she’s with her family. Plus, she’s so cute! :)

san diego dog photo session

This pointy puppy is Bentley! He’s the youngest one of the bunch, by several years, so he wins the award for Most Energetic Dog of the Day! He was beyond excited to visit the park and especially the beach – and honestly, it’s hard to take a bad photo of his handsome face. What a gorgeous pup… with a silly, ridiculous personality to boot! Bentley basically had me laughing for the entire session… he was always ready to fetch the frisbee one more time!

san diego rescue dog picture

Okay, I lied. We’re not park-exclusive anymore. Here’s one beach photo of Dippy’s famous side-eye… just because. :)

Rebecca & Holly, thank you for such a fun afternoon! I hope you’re having a great trip, and I’m excited to see you both again soon!

Photo Session at Mission Trails Park with Oliver and his Brothers!

Thursday, September 24th, 2015

This photo session at Mission Trails Park was a great one – even though, I have to admit, it came together in less-than-ideal circumstances. Oliver’s mom contacted me just a couple of weeks ago – she received this sweet boy as a wedding present (!) 14 years ago, but these days, his kidneys simply aren’t holding up anymore. So we got together as soon as possible, which I’m happy to do for clients in situations like this. And luckily, Oliver is still feeling like himself – he absolutely loved being at Mission Trails Park! It was new territory to explore, and even though we never let him off-leash, I would have been curious to see those Jack Russell terrier hunting instincts come alive! I bet he would have loved to look around… but as it turns out, traffic (of all things!) delayed our session by a little while, and since I time out my sessions to end at sunset (the best light of the day) we suddenly found ourselves in a race against the sun! Haha – luckily, Oliver was willing to speed through a bunch of cute poses like a little pro, and so were his human brothers! So the photos you’re about to see were created with a whole lot of hustle from everyone involved! :)

Oh – and a small but important side note! If you recognize Oliver and/or his brothers, DON’T tell their father about these photos! They’re an anniversary gift and we don’t want to spoil the surprise! (Their mom promised I could make this post, but let’s make sure they don’t go anywhere else!)

This is Oliver! I just love his sweet smile!

mission trails park dog

Although he wasn’t too keen in staying in one place for more than a couple of seconds, his tennis ball helped him settle into the long grasses and relax…

mission trails park photo

Here are all the brothers! (Oliver is the oldest at 14; his human siblings are 8 & 6 years old.) Aren’t they all so dapper & adorable?!

Lisa, I had a great time with all of you! I’m so excited to show you the rest of our images soon! :)

Marlow the San Diego Pointer (and his siblings too!)

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2015

Marlow has had a pretty rough couple of months.

I was originally contacted by a friend of Marlow’s family, who heard about Marlow’s recent diagnosis. Brain cancer isn’t easy for any family to go through, and it was especially difficult for Marlow’s parents to accept that there was something wrong with their sweet old man. Marlow means the world to them… and I simply can’t imagine how they were able to swallow such an awful diagnosis. And unfortunately, there were even more worries headed their way: about a month ago, Marlow suffered a stroke which left him temporarily paralyzed. Can you imagine how scared you’d be to wake up one morning and find that your dog can’t move any of his legs? Devon, Marlow’s dad, was carrying him outside to go to the bathroom, and back inside again, several times a day. But despite the odds, Marlow fought back, and within a few days he was walking again! He still runs with a bit of a sideways gallop, a kind of lasting mark from the paralysis… but he’s back to his cheerful, walking-around-on-his-own self! (Although he’s a LOT hungrier these days, which is a side effect of his medication. On the bright side, that meant he was super-attentive to the treats I brought!)

If you can, I urge you to send happy thoughts & prayers to Marlow and his family. They could certainly use them, after all they’ve been through.

But our session wasn’t about concentrating on the past, or his current issues – it was about photographing Marlow’s interminable spirit! It was an honor to meet this handsome old man, and I truly had a great time working with him and his siblings in their Serra Mesa backyard.

This is Marlow! Don’t you love his sweet old face?

San Diego pointer dog

This is Marlow’s younger sister, Darla! She’s also a pointer, and acts like a total puppy (even though she’s 4 years old). She’s happiest when she’s chasing her ball – this girl is an athlete – but I caught her during a (rare) still moment!

happy san diego pointer

And this is Cielo, the 8-year-old husky, to round out the pack. Cielo is an absolutely gorgeous girl who insists on beating Marlow to the ball every time their parents throw it, haha!

husky close up

Okay, okay, one more… I told you Darla is an athlete! See that purple ball in her mouth? It gives her the power to leap higher than you thought possible… this is my favorite image of her gravity-defying feats!

San Diego pointer jumping

Devon & Amanda, thank you so much for a fun-filled afternoon with your pups. And Brittany, thank you for introducing us! I’m so excited to show you the rest of our photos soon!
