Balboa Park Dog Photo Session: Cooper & Sophie!

Saturday, April 4th, 2015

I shared a lovely Balboa Park dog photography session with two happy pups recently! I’m so happy to introduce you to Cooper & Sophie, a heeler mix & chihuahua! These dogs are seriously the best friends – their favorite thing to do is run around and chase each other. And trust me, it’s adorable to watch! Sophie, the chihuahua, is much faster than her bigger & older brother, so she runs in circles and figure eights around him, speeding off in new directions every other second – while he either chases after her or waits for her to come back around to the same spot! They have such a cute relationship; even when we went to the beach later in the afternoon, they really just wanted to play with each other. Like I said – best friends. (Okay, Cooper may have tried herding another dog or two around the beach… But he always came back to Sophie!)

This is little miss Sophie! I loved photographing her amongst the architecture & flowers at Balboa Park.       balboa park dog

I can’t get enough of this portrait of both dogs together! Don’t you love their matching pointy ears? :)         balboa park dogs

And then we headed to Cooper’s happy place – the beach. He loves it here – and whether it happens to be Coronado, Fiesta Island, Ocean Beach, Del Mar, it doesn’t matter. He’s just happy to be in the water & sand!coronado dog beach

Dee & Andrew, I had a great time with all four of you! I’m excited to show you the rest of our photos very soon!

San Diego Papillons Mariposa, Benny & Sprocket

Friday, April 3rd, 2015

I know a few San Diego papillons whose cute faces are practically guaranteed to brighten your day! I recently met Mariposa, Benny & Sprocket at their home in Normal Heights, and their session was actually the second time I visited their house! You see, I normally do a Pre-Session Consultation for all my clients; it’s a fun meet-and-greet appointment where I can form a bit of a relationship with the dog(s) prior to the photo session, and it’s a great time for clients to ask me any questions they have and take a look through my entire product line in-person. I typically have these appointments here in my studio, but I spoke with these dogs’ mom beforehand, and she said that Sprocket & Benny (both rescue dogs) don’t do very well visiting new places – especially Sprocket. It turned out to be a much better idea to take the meeting to them – so I was happy to drive over to their house and meet them on familiar territory! Sprocket barked at me pretty much the entire time, haha – but his attitude quickly changed when he got a taste of the treats I brought to our session! His appetite is stronger than his fear of strangers, thankfully, so he went from completely suspicious & fearful to following me around like a shadow by the end of the afternoon. It was such a fun transformation to see… and on the other hand, the other two dogs don’t have the same trust issues that Sprocket does, and so they were much happier to pose for treats right off the bat! No “transformation” necessary; they smiled for my camera as soon as they got a whiff of the lamb treats, haha! I love working with dogs that have such different personalities… it keeps every session challenging & entertaining!

This is Benny! He’s by far the most treat-motivated of the entire bunch, haha. Don’t you love those long, flowing hairs on his ears?

This is Sprocket, a papillon mix. He’s got such a handsome “serious” face! Because of his rescue background, Sprocket thrives on affection – seriously, it’s practically all he needs besides food & shelter – and his mom makes sure he gets plenty every day.

And this little princess is Mariposa! Or perhaps I should say queen; she rules the house and lets her brothers run around barking while she calmly watches over whatever’s going on. Such a regal presence! (All built into just four pounds!)

Ricki, thank you for a fabulous afternoon! I had a great time during our session (and the hour and a half we spent together afterwards, haha)! Can’t wait to see you again soon!

Mission Hills Pet Photography Session with Ridley & Samus

Monday, March 30th, 2015

Are you ready for two of the cutest little faces you’ve ever seen?! Today I get the privilege of introducing you to Ridley & Samus (pronounced SAM-us), two small pups who live in the Mission Hills neighborhood! Ridley is a chihuahua, and I just love his fur coloring: he has the tiniest little eyebrows, and his black fur lightens into a brown-and-black mixture at his paws. He’s completely unique! His big sister, Samus, is a chihuahua/terrier mutt with ridiculously scruffy fur and the sweetest big eyes. There’s definitely no mistaking her for any other dogs, either – I bet you’ve never seen a mutt that looks quite like Samus!

So I met these pups at my studio, and then we spent the rest of their photo session wandering around Mission Hills, stopping in front of cute yards & doorways – we even walked to a spot that overlooks downtown San Diego! It was a great testament to the fact that sessions don’t have to happen inside my clients’ houses, or even in their backyards; I’m loving the images we created around their neighborhood, and they’re still super-personal since all of the locations we found are on the dogs’ normal daily walking route!

This is Ridley – and although he’s standing in this photo, I learned that whenever he sits, he prefer to have his front feet on a lower level than his butt. So at one point he was sitting near his mom, who was also sitting nearby, but then he backed up and scooched his little booty up on to her leg, so that just his front paws were on the ground! What a goofball!

Samus, for her part, enjoyed the studio, but really lit up once we got outside! This dog loves the great outdoors! She practically pranced around her neighborhood, so excited to show me all her favorite spots (and bark at all the other dogs we encountered on our way, of course).

Ridley was such a good poser. Doesn’t he seem to be thinking deep thoughts here? “I wonder when I’ll get that next piece of cheese…”

We almost made it back home when we saw this door, and I’m SO glad we stopped for a quick photo! Samus, you’re a great poser, just like your brother!

Photo Session with 5 Yorkies in Del Mar, CA

Friday, March 27th, 2015

Are you ready for an extra-large sneak peek?? I’m excited to share this session with you, because it’s not every day that I get to share a session with five dogs at once! So I was thrilled to meet these yorkies in Del Mar, and we had a wonderful time around the town together! We visited a local park, their mom’s condo, and we finished our session at the beach… it was so much fun! And each of these dogs has their own, completely distinct personality… it was really interesting to get to know them and see their differences in the time we spent together. I really love getting to know my clients and their pets – whether they have one pet or five! :)

This is Diva! She’s the mother of the group – literally! And she feels completely comfortable exercising her matriarchal authority; she was rarely rattled as her puppies ran around, barking at things & generally being silly… Diva preferred to sit back & watch as the chaos went on around her. Such a calm, regal dog!

This is one of her sons, Sparky! He’s a big guy – much bigger than Diva – and even though he’s deaf, he’s a total sweetheart. Just look at those eyes!

And here’s Rebel! He loooves to run around, as do most of the dogs… but true to his name, we’d often find him wandering around somewhere all by himself! But he’s really well-trained, so when we called him, he’d come running back, just like this!

This little lady is Liberty! Here’s a rare photo in which she’s not jumping up at my feet, begging for the treats in my hand, haha – trust me, she takes “food motivated” to a whole new level! (But really – for that face – could you resist?!)

And last but certainly not least is Rocky, getting comfortable here on the bed, with his signature one-ear-up pose. And I’ll be totally honest: the way his right ear is always up and his left ear always flops down was clutch in helping my recognize him at a moment’s glance amongst his siblings! :)

And then… we went SURFING!!!

Okay, we didn’t actually catch any waves, but I just love how these dogs look like they’re ready to hang ten! (or twenty!)

Thanks for a fun & memorable session, Laura! And thank you for training your dogs so well – these pups were so enjoyable to work with! :)

Gracie, the Beautiful San Diego Saint Bernard

Sunday, March 22nd, 2015

I don’t know about you, but I love big dogs. There’s just something about their oversized paws, sweet eyes and low-hanging tongues that I can’t get enough of… so imagine my delight to meet Gracie! This San Diego Saint Bernard is actually a bit small for her breed – her mom calls her a “teacup St. Bernard”, haha – but she seems plenty big to me! She’s an easygoing dog with gorgeous eyes, and when she visited for her Pre-Session Consultation she was intent on emptying my studio toy basket in search of a nice, chewable bone! This silly girl (who was a surprise gift for her mom, and greeted her at the airport upon return from a business trip wrapped in a big bow, courtesy of her dad) is active in the community, too – she works as a therapy dog at local nursing homes! She’s a big hit (no pun intended… well, okay, I guess it was) with the senior citizens who light up when she comes to say hello – and her mom tells me that Gracie loves the work of being a therapy dog! She took to it completely naturally, even in puppyhood, and I’m so honored to have met this lovely girl. I know she’s destined for big things! (Okay, okay, I’ll stop with the “big” jokes.)

Are you serious, Gracie?! How cute can you get??

… posing for photos is hard work…

I’m pretty sure Gracie wanted to get up close and personal with my treat bag! It was pretty funny to see her eat the treats we’d give her – they’re the Zuke’s Mini Naturals bite-sized ones, and they’d get lost in her jowls as she attempted to eat them from my hands! I like using small treats in sessions, so the dogs don’t fill up on them – but in this case they were a bit too small! I think I owe Gracie a few Saint Bernard-sized treats, haha!

Jodi, thanks for a wonderful afternoon with your gorgeous girl! I can’t wait to show you the rest of our photos soon! :)
