Buster the 10-Year-Old Staffy Mix

Friday, October 18th, 2019

I am so happy to introduce you to Buster! He’s a 10-year-old American Staffordshire terrier mix, a total sweetheart, super easy-going, and an as-long-as-my-mom’s-here-I’m-happy kind of dog. He and his mom actually live just a few blocks away from my studio, and that’s where we started our photo session! But after a few minutes we noticed he was somewhat uncomfortable, and just not loving the studio. He was trying his best – but it was clear that it simply wasn’t the ideal place to be. So we decided to adjust our plans and head to Balboa Park shortly into our session – which turned out to a great thing for him! He really came alive in the wide-open environment and it was almost like his head was on a swivel, taking it all in. He was ready to be on guard for his mom (watching verrrrry closely the families playing on the nearby playground, haha!) and it was too cute!

And my favorite part? Our timing was perfect when we arrived; the lighting was absolutely gorgeous. We headed over to a little corner of the park where it was relatively quiet, and he did some more of his favorite pose (laying down). He is 10 years old after all, so we cut him some slack, haha! He did some walking around and even did a little jogging with his mom. (Be forewarned: you might get a workout in the middle of your photo session!) And Buster never gave us any trouble because his mom brought his faaaaavorite treat – chicken! So as long as he had his mom and his chicken, he was a happy boy! :)

Overall, we had a really relaxing and peaceful photo session. Buster is doing great even though his mom is starting to see signs of his age. (You gotta love how healthy mutts tend to be! Buster’s staffy mix heritage is certainly doing him favors these days.) She wanted to get this photo session on our calendars before anything takes a turn, which I think is a perfect idea. I was thrilled to be able to do this for them and can’t wait to show off the rest of his portraits at his ordering session!

See you soon, Cynthia! Give that handsome boy a hug for me in the meantime!

Rupert the Fetch Machine

Friday, October 11th, 2019

Meet Rupert, the happiest dog ever! Get this: his 2 favorite things (besides his parents, of course) are playing fetch with his ball and having his picture taken. Whether the picture-taker is a professional like me or it’s just a quick cell phone pic, he knows what’s happening and he loves it. So imagine his joy as he spent the afternoon playing with his ball AND having his photo taken… Rupert’s day was made. I’m pretty sure he was on cloud 9 during his entire photo session – and he was simply a dream to work with!

We started at San Dieguito County Park and we played fetch amongst the grass and the fall leaves. Rupert was just so funny; it was almost like he couldn’t believe we were there to just play fetch and take photos! He looked at me several times as if to say, “really? We’re just here to do THIS?!” And at one point when I wanted to take a family portrait, he decided it was better timing for a belly rub. He flipped himself over with a big ol’ smile on his face looking at his parents, having decided that plan was much better than my plan! He had everyone laughing!

After the park, we headed to Windansea Beach down in La Jolla. I’m so glad we did, so we could capture the distinctive rock formations on the beach that are very much a part of the La Jolla coastline. Rupert continued to have an amazing time splashing in the water, chasing his ball and shaking off every time he got wet. Each time he fetched, I asked his dad to throw the ball towards me so we could capture Rupert running towards the camera. And I have to say, I’m impressed – he did a surprisingly good job of running SO hard at me and yet swerving at the very last moment without touching me! There were several times where I thought oh this is it. we’re going to collide. and it’s gonna hurt… but he never did! He avoided me with the deftness of a cheetah, swinging his tail and barely missing me every time (despite the fact that my life flashed before my eyes at least once). His athleticism was off the charts – he may be 6 years old, but he doesn’t act a day over 1!

Did I mention how handsome he is?!

Occasionally he took a break from running around like a maniac…

Beach = fetch, for Rupert. If he’s not chasing the ball, is there even a point to being there?!

I had an amazing time laughing with Rupert and his parents! I’m looking forward to showing them his photos soon!

Harley and Molly – A Mid-Year Update of their Puppy Plans!

Tuesday, October 8th, 2019

You guys… I can’t get enough of these Puppy Plan sessions!! I wanted to give an update on Molly and Harley since they’ve both have had their second round of photo sessions now. Which means they are officially more than halfway through the year and growing so fast! It’s been so much fun working with them so far. I can’t wait for you to see how much they’ve changed already! I’m definitely looking forward to their 3rd session as fully grown dogs, and we’ll do that when they are a year old. For the meantime, here are some cute photos of the first two portrait sessions where you can already see some major changes happening. The best part? I love that their parents will be able to look back and remember all of the fluffy cuteness from the beginning!

First up is little miss Molly! She’s an adorable mixed breed dog who lives in the Olivenhain neighborhood of Encinitas. I love that we were able to do both photo sessions in her backyard as it keeps the environment consistent and the only thing that changes is Molly. You can really see how she grows because of that!

Just a few months later…

Rest assured, she’s keeping that killer head tilt! :)

Okay, ready for more? This is Harley, a Saint Bernard puppy. I’m so glad I got to meet her when she was just about 10 weeks old. She was so tiny and fluffy! As you can see, she was an absolute doll in the studio. :)

… and this is big, huge Harley at 7 months old! (I know she’s a St. Bernard, but still! She’s sooooo much bigger!) I can’t believe she still has more growing left to do, haha! We visited a totally different location for her second session, and I know her family loved having a new setting to change things up as she grows.

Aren’t these girls gorgeous?! Stay tuned, and I’ll be sharing photos of both Molly and Harley from their next Puppy Plan photo session when they’re each 1 year old!

Marley and Millie – Pit Bull Mixes from University Heights

Thursday, September 26th, 2019

All of my photo sessions are special to me, but I have to be honest, this one was extra special… because I actually photographed Marley back in 2014!! I feel absolutely honored to have the opportunity to catch up with clients and be invited back to take more photos years later. Plus, since the last time I saw Marley and her mom, they’ve added a new addition to their family: Millie!

Marley is a calm, happy dog who takes pretty much everything in stride. Millie is also a brindle pit bull mix, like her sister, but is quite the opposite when it comes to personality! And even though we met at the pre-session consultation, she was still nervous and on edge when I arrived at their house on the day of the photo session. But after a bit of coaxing & patience, she eventually warmed up to me (allowing us to get some amazing portraits) and towards the end of the photo session she was following me around, asking for more treats & attention! It just goes to show that even with dogs that have “stranger danger” tendencies, we can still have a great photo session together. :)

And after an unfortunate overcast-sky-delay, the second half of our photo session was at La Jolla beach where we had a great time! Marley’s MO was just to meet other people & dogs, walk around and sniff everything. She was a happy girl just doing her thing. Millie, on the other hand, found it necessary to be playing fetch with the ball out into the water. And sprinting around the beach like a madwoman! That girl seriously loves the waves! I know you’ll enjoy this sneak peek of photos from their session – and their moms have plenty more images to see very soon!

Sweet Marley. Gettin’ scratches.

Millie is a puppy compared to Marley – and has the energy level to prove it, haha!

They would be great guard dogs if they weren’t so darn sweet.

What good pups you two are. Gah, those faces!

Sarah & Trish, I’m excited to see you again soon! Give your girls a hug for me in the meantime! :)

Gretzky, the Mixed Breed Rescue Dog

Thursday, August 1st, 2019

Say hello to Gretzky! :) I’ve actually known his parents for a while now, and have photographed their family and a couple of their dogs in the past who unfortunately aren’t with us anymore. This family has a special place in their heart for older dogs; I think they adopted their girl Bullet when she was more than 10 years old – which, for a pittie mix, is getting up there. So imagine my surprise (and probably theirs too) when they recently went to the Humane Society to adopt another senior dog and left with a 4-month-old puppy instead! Haha! I’m so glad they decided to add this spunky little dude to the mix!

They aren’t too sure what mix of breeds Gretzky is, but they’ll be finding out soon via a DNA test. Possibly part pit bull, part Great Dane? (Great Dane is definitely in question!) The mystery is definitely part of the fun of adopting a rescue dog. Either way, he is just adorable and surprisingly calm for a pup his age! He loves treats and my backdrop sparked his curiosity. We were even able to capture a few photos of him with his older siblings, Dozer and Bullet. He clearly adores them and the feeling is mutual… some of the time. ;)

This was his “Puppy Plan” session #1! I’ve been looking forward to it since his mom called me with the announcement of adopting a new puppy. And what a fun way to kick off my first official photo session since coming back from maternity leave! It was a great reintroduction back into the studio, working with past clients on a fresh new project – and I can’t wait to watch Gretzky as he grows up alongside my baby girl! :)

That face!! I might have come back from maternity leave even earlier if I knew Gretzky’s big brown eyes were waiting for me…

Gretzky would like to take this time to remind you that he’s 100% puppy.

Welcome to the “Puppy Plan” family, Gretzky! I bet you’re going to be a big boy (especially if the Great Dane part is true!) and I can’t wait to see how much you’ve grown in a few months from now…
