Clover, the Charming & Cheeky Dachshund

Thursday, June 1st, 2023

Meet Clover, a 100% pure dachshund! (It’s true, even if the pictures might lead you to think otherwise – the DNA results are in!) This session was special to me because it was the last of Clover’s “Puppy Plan” sessions (what’s a Puppy Plan? click here), and I had the honor of capturing Clover as she enters that beautiful transition between being a puppy and becoming a fully-grown dog. She’s a year old now, and I’m so glad that her mom wanted to document Clover’s life in such a sweet, personal way. :)

Working with Clover was fun because she is such a character. She’s very vocal and makes everyone aware of her presence with different sounds and tones (she might have been a singer in her previous life?). Photographing her is a joy, especially because she lets her personality shine. She’s silly, down-to-earth, and definitely outspoken (she’ll bark at everything — consistency is key, haha!). She’s also a sweet compliment to her sister, Daisy, who just recently finished her Puppy Plan with me as well. Both girls are similar but also different in many ways, and it’s heartwarming that their mom will be able to look back on each little milestone for her pups.

We ended up in San Dieguito Park for this session, and it was the perfect backdrop for Clover. Even though we had already done one of Daisy’s photo sessions in the same location, Clover’s session was completely different! Clover gave us completely unique poses and moments compared to her sister. It was wonderful seeing how each dog is different, even when they’re playing in the exact same location. Aren’t all dogs the most wonderful, independent souls? That’s definitely why I love working with dogs, even if I go to the same locations more than once – I get to navigate so many personalities and fall in love with each dog’s unique quirks. :)

So today I’d love to share a few photos from Clover’s most recent photo session – and maybe an extra puppy photo or two if you keep scrolling…

Iver, the Silly & Sweet Sheltie Puppy

Thursday, August 26th, 2021

I recently got to photograph the cutest little 5-month-old Sheltie named Iver! I just about fell in love with him during our photo session, and I think you will too. One of my favorite parts about Iver is his backstory, and how his parents came to find him. They knew that they wanted a dog for a long, long time. They looked everywhere in San Diego to find the right fit – but despite how dog-friendly our city is, they realized that it’s actually pretty difficult to find a place in the rental housing market that allows dogs, especially dogs over 25 pounds. (Which I can personally relate to! My Bailey is not a small dog!) So after searching at shelter after shelter, Iver’s parents simply weren’t able to find the right pup. But you know what? I really believe that the right dog will find its way to the right family. And after months of uncertainty, they finally heard from a Sheltie breeder out of the blue – and what do you know, it was finally time for them to meet their dog. Iver and his parents go together like a glove. They’re all so sweet, and they love spending time together! (Which meant that I really loved spending time with them, too!)

We went to Old Poway Park for the first part of Iver’s session, and everything was going great. But this park has a stream running through the middle of it, and on the day we visited, the stream bed was damp with just a little bit of water. Iver, however, took one look and decided he was going to pretend that there was still water in it! He jumped face-first into the mud! It certainly gave us all a scare! It was a big drop, but thankfully he was completely fine (and ready to do it again two minutes later, the little stinker!). But with a long-haired dog like him, a little mud goes a long way. So we paused the photo session, reassessed, and decided to get together for the second half of our session on another day. So I can happily promise that no dogs were harmed in the making of this photo session… but not for lack of trying! Thanks, Iver! ;)

So a few days later, we headed down to the beach in La Jolla, right near where his mom works. He loved running around on the sand – in fact, Iver preferred to stay dry the whole time! (Apparently rivers & streams are interesting, but the ocean? Not to be trusted.) He was not a fan of the water other than dipping his toes in – and that’s totally okay. In fact, it helped us get some great portraits of his beautiful (dry) fur!

I don’t know how Iver’s personality is going to develop as he grows up, since he has so much growing left to do – but I do know that his parents are the perfect fit for him. I’m so glad they all found each other. And I love when people come to me with a puppy, because it’s just the beginning! It’s a true honor each time, because I get a front-row seat to the beginning of an amazing story. I couldn’t be more excited for this sweet family of three!

Did I mention that Iver is a gorgeous dog?!

He also had a BLAST running around at the beach!

But he’s always happiest when he’s with his parents. Sweet boy.

Kate & Erick, thank you so much for introducing me to your wonderful pup! I’m excited to see you again soon! :)

Levi & Aura, San Diego Border Collies

Wednesday, June 30th, 2021

I’m so excited to share this fun photo session of Levi and Aura with you all!

Levi the border collie was adopted a couple of years ago, back when he was a little puppy. After he & his mom got to know each other, she later learned that he is actually deaf in one of his ears. As some of you may know (I didn’t!) the way that dogs’ ears work is basically by each ear “covering” 180 degrees of where sounds are coming from, so as you can guess, dogs really rely on being able to use each of their ears. Since he wasn’t able to hear that well, as a puppy it often seemed to Levi that people were “sneaking up on him” – poor thing! – which understandably led to some trust issues. And as a puppy he often wasn’t too sure of himself, most likely as a result of his hearing issue, but his mom took the time to really work with him, build trust, and help him flourish! With lots of love and training, he has made TREMENDOUS strides in his journey. He’s a much more confident dog now, I’m told – and he & his mom have a beautiful relationship built on a solid foundation of trust. He absolutely adores her, and it was beautiful to see their bond.

Fast forward two years – and we have an exciting new addition to the family! Levi and his mom recently adopted a border collie puppy named Aura! She is simply precious, and has really brought out the “puppy” in Levi as well. Aura is a silly, squirmy girl and is the confident yin to Levi’s cautious yang. She is SO playful, cute, energetic, spunky…the list goes on! The two pups have an amazing sibling bond as well; Levi has helped teach her things like sit and stay on command. So what’s funny about their relationship is that while Aura has learned tricks and good behavior from her big brother, he has learned how to loosen up and play because of her. Their mom has also spent a lot of time training with Aura, and I was truly impressed with her obedience. (It helps to be on “puppy maternity leave” and be able to truly focus on the two of them!)

Our location of choice was the Spanish Art Village in Balboa Park. The entire time we had people come up and say, “Oh look at those cute dogs!”, etc. – so I’m pretty sure their mom gets stopped alllllllll the time. We then headed to San Dieguito County Park and let the dogs stretch their legs and play fetch. Levi always wants to “work” and have a job to do, but when we got there he couldn’t help himself: he actually ran straight into the pond! He was definitely not supposed to do that, but we couldn’t help but laugh when he let loose! It was so much fun to see them play around, and see two very different personalities. This truly was an awesome photo session with a tight knit little family. They have such a beautiful life ahead of them, and I’m excited to see what’s to come!

This is Levi – isn’t he gorgeous?!

Porter, the Anxious Yet Adorable Puppy

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2021

Stop what you’re doing – you’ll thank me later – and come meet this adorable 6-month-old rescue puppy, Porter! He was recently adopted from a rescue organization in the Little Italy area of San Diego. And as his dad cleverly says, Porter comes from a long, established line of street dogs! :)

My favorite part of their story comes from the first time Porter met his dad: they had gone on a walk around Little Italy, to get acquainted, and afterwards Porter fell asleep on his shoes when they were done. It speaks volumes to me that he would immediately trust him that much! Porter’s trust isn’t earned very easily – trust me on this one – so I think that story is all the proof I’ll ever need that Porter & his dad are the perfect match.

My second favorite thing about Porter and his dad’s story? Turns out Porter is a little timid around new people, due to some anxiety issues. He’s had some sleeping issues at night, and separation anxiety too – so his dad has kindly worked with him by busting out the sleeping bag to be near him, just outside of his crate, all night long. Once the sleeping bag was working to keep Porter calm & happy, he “graduated” to sleeping on the couch! This went on for weeks – all to keep Porter as comfortable as possible. Isn’t that wonderful?! That story just blew me away with how dedicated he is to his boy! Thankfully, Porter is doing much better in his crate now, and his anxiety issues are lessening. Their connection is real, and as a result, it’s safe to say that Porter only has eyes for his dad.

The nice thing about Porter’s nervousness around other people & wanting to stay close to his dad was that he was able to be off-leash in some relatively crowded parts of town. No issues, no running away whatsoever – which is amazing for a puppy! If he got distracted by some smells, he was always quick to come trotting right back. I lovingly nicknamed him the “velcro puppy”, since he never wanted to be more than a couple of inches from his dad. I wonder if that’s a personality trait that will stick around as time goes on…

We started our photo session at the Spanish Art Village at Balboa Park, and then headed over to Coronado Beach. I think Porter’s favorite part of the session was playing fetch on the beach!

This is Porter. That face… what a handsome boy!

Maple & Waffles – Their First Session of “The Puppy Plan”

Sunday, June 21st, 2020

This is a rare kind of blog post! I don’t normally share “sneak peeks” for my Puppy Plan clients – but then again, most Puppy Plans don’t get interrupted by coronavirus! I am so disappointed that this pandemic has interrupted my time & planning with several amazing clients – and certainly not least of all on that list are Maple & Waffles, adorable Maltese puppies from San Diego. This boy-and-girl sibling pair are the CUTEST little fluffs, and we visited Windansea Beach for our first session in the Puppy Plan. While they were a little trepidatious about the water (hey, I don’t blame them, Maltese dogs weren’t built for swimming!) they quite enjoyed running around the sand and enjoying the view from the safety of their mom’s arms.

So I’m happy to introduce you to these pups – and to give their mom a peek at a few photos for now, until we can finally get together and go through the rest together in person!

They may have been new to the beach scene, but they sure figured out how to strut their stuff pretty quickly!
