The Best Pet Photography Products

how much should a pet photo session cost

I absolutely love creating gorgeous images of pets & families around San Diego… but you know what’s just as much fun? Doing something with those photos! It’s a tragedy, in my opinion, to let high-quality imagery languish on a forgotten hard drive… and products are often an afterthought of people seeking photography. Which is totally understandable, to be honest with you; it’s hard to envision what you’ll do with photos that haven’t even been taken yet. But I’d love to provide you with some inspiration today! I’ve been photographing 4-leggers and their families for over 6 years, and over that time I’ve seen firsthand which types of products have a lasting impact & can truly stand the test of time. I’ve also curated my product line throughout those years to include the best & most popular products that my clients & I have consistently loved. These are some of the best pet photography products that I’ve ever seen – so I’m excited to share them with you!

Wall art is a classic way to enjoy your portraits every day. This is hands-down my favorite type of product; decorating the space you spend your life in with images you truly love.

I offer fine art prints, canvas gallery wraps, and metal prints – and as you can see, they all have a very different look! I typically recommend choosing the medium that best suits your design style; if modern & contemporary is your thing, go with metal! It’s stunningly gorgeous and makes an impact wherever you display it. But if rustic & organic is your look, then canvas gallery wraps are a perfect fit – they have subtle texture and a vibe that evokes the natural side of life. On the other hand, traditional and classic style lends itself well to fine art prints. Whichever medium you choose, you want it to fit in with the rest of your home’s decor, and a variety of wall art products allows me to work with any client’s design style.

2. Albums

best products for pet photography

Okay, I know I said that I love wall art the most – but my albums take a very close second place! Books & albums are the best way to display ALL the photos from your pet photography session. You probably won’t choose to hang up 40 photos on your walls (do you have that many walls?), but you can enjoy them all in the pages of a premium album! Plus, albums are a great place for the detail images, the silly moments, and the funny outtakes that simply aren’t suited to be hung on the wall.

I also like to include quotes from various authors & historical figures in my albums; there are SO many great sayings out there about pets, love and family, and they help tell the story of your session and what your pets mean to you as you’re flipping through the pages.

3.Digital Images

best pet photography products

It’s 2017, so this post simply wouldn’t be complete without a mention of my digital products. But can I share something with you that not many people know about digital photos? The resolution is key. Purchasing a photo with high-resolution is like pulling out all the stops; you can print it at many sizes and it won’t look grainy or pixellated. It can, however, be overkill for digital use; super-high resolution is why photos on websites take a long time to load. Whereas photos with low-resolution are the perfect quick digital option! They load quickly, take up less hard drive space, and are generally more nimble & versatile online. But their weakness is printing; a physical copy of a low-resolution photo will often appear pixellated. (It’s not the printer’s fault – it’s the photo!) So make your choice carefully, based on what you want to do with the images from your photo session! My clients often choose the high-resolution option, so they can make Christmas cards and fun stuff in the future (like mugs & mouse pads!) and in that case I give them a complimentary low-resolution version of each image too, just in case they want to share them online without a headache. But many of my clients also choose to have a custom mobile app with their images, which is a great low-resolution option! It’s so much fun to have a quick-access app on your phone, so you can always bring up the photos from your session!

4. Desktop Prints

pet photo desktop print

Okay, I admit, this is not a high-quality photo – it’s an iPhone snapshot of my desk! But what better example can I give you of why I love desktop prints? This is a photo of my girl Bailey, and I absolutely love keeping it so close by. Because as much as I love to pull out all the stops with archival wall art & custom-designed albums, I also know that there’s a beautiful simplicity to an old-fashioned framed print on your desktop. (Or your shelf, or entry table, or dresser…) So why argue with tradition? My fine art prints are UV-coated, too, so even if your desk sits in the sunlight, your prints will never fade. That happy face will always be as vibrant as the day of our photo session.

Conclusion

So there you have it! These are some of my favorite options, and I think they’re the best pet photography products on the market today. If you’re working with a photographer, keep this in mind: I hope you’ll choose products that fit your lifestyle & how you prefer to experience photography. There are tons of options out there (I offer a few more products, too!) and I think you’ll love picking out your favorites!

In the meantime, let me leave you with a couple of my creative wall art collages (in metal and canvas) for inspiration…

Changing With the Times: DVDs vs. USBs

Tuesday, October 30th, 2012

Hey everyone!

October has been a whirlwind month for me – not with sessions, but with trips out of town. Today is my first day back to work, and I’m proud and thrilled to announce that I’m fully booked through Christmas! Woohoo! :)

But amidst playing catch-up, and looking at devastating coverage of Hurricane Sandy’s wrath, one more big thing has been on my mind today: making adjustments in my business to be ready for the future. Yes, the future! This is what I’m talking about:

That’s a screen shot from apple.com’s online store. It’s Apple’s second computer for which there’s no CD/DVD drive. The MacBook Air has USB ports, and so does this new beast, but no CDs or DVDs will work on them without an external device just for reading the discs. This is no longer a fluke; it’s a trend. And before someone yells at me, I know that Apple isn’t the end-all-be-all of technology! Haha! But let’s face it: who pioneered the touchscreen phone? They did. And now everything is touchscreen. That’s just one example; Apple is at the forefront of technology and design. You just can’t deny it. Love ’em or hate ’em, they’re ridiculously influential. And I can’t help but think other companies will follow their example and omit CD/DVD drives on their new computers as well.

The fact is, the DVDs I sell are probably my most popular product, but if they’re even just beginning the trip downhill and following the way of the floppy disk, that means I’m providing obsolete technology to my clients. Guess what? I’m not okay with that.

But before I make any big decisions, I want to get YOUR opinion. As a solution for delivering digital files, what would you think if I offered custom USB flash drives instead of DVDs? Do you consider them more or less useful? Convenient? Breakable? Misplace-able?

Thank you so much for leaving me a comment below, or sending me a message – I’m excited to hear what you all have to say! :)

Fun Products for Your Digital Images

Tuesday, August 7th, 2012

I’ve been excited about this blog post for a long time, and finally had a few spare minutes today to put it all together! I’m thrilled to introduce you to Pinhole Press, a fabulous provider of “beautifully simple photo gifts”!  You know I think photos speak louder than words, so here are a few samples of their work (featuring Daly & Kaylee):

High-quality paper and book products made from consumer digital photos.

Books, notepads, professional-quality prints…

A collection of paper products made from digital images.

As a professional photographer, I’m happy to provide my clients with the digital images from their session. We live in a digital age, so I know the files will get plenty of mileage as screen savers and Facebook albums – but at the same time, I know all too well that photos on a disk can stay right there. On the disk. And never leave it! Honestly, there’s no good that can come from having your digital photos and never DOING anything with them! But the most accessible (and cheapest) places to get photos printed are from pharmacies & big box stores that, unfortunately, can’t turn out quality prints on a consistent basis. So I kind of shudder a bit every time someone mentions getting their photos printed at a nearby shop, because I just know they won’t turn out like I see them on my monitor or as they would with one of my professional labs. They won’t look their best. So here’s the quandary: keep photos in the digital world and never turn them into anything, or turn them into cheap prints that’ll fade & lose their luster in a few years? Yuck. Neither!

Lucky for me, Pinhole Press stepped up to bat and provided a solution that THRILLS me and keeps my clients really happy too! They are a professional-quality lab open to consumers – and they make a lot more than prints! You can see in the examples above & below that they have an awesome, diverse product lineup. Everything they sell is high-quality, of course, but just as importantly, their printing processes reliably and consistently turn out perfect colors & exposure from your digital images. Having your prints made at a cheap place (and all the risks you take with that) is no longer your only option! So to see all the product choices you have, click on this link and prepare to be awed. Here are a couple of  products you might like:

A small brag book with fabric covers and ribbon closures… (featuring Barkley)

Small brag book, a product for which to upload your digital photos.

An accordion card (yes, you can drop this in the mail!) with Beckham’s handsome face.

Accordion card for digital photo use.

Here are my Photo Notepads :

Honestly, the paper quality is outstanding. They’re made of Mohawk Fine paper and completely environment-friendly. Um… have I said enough nice things about Pinhole Press yet? Haha – I just re-read this post and I think I’m on the verge of sounding like one of their employees…! But really, I’m careful about recommending anything, especially here on the blog, because I’d hate to point someone toward a negative experience. The good news is I have the confidence in Pinhole Press to introduce them to as many people as possible. (oh – and they have a Facebook page too) :)

Here’s the link one more time: www.pinholepress.com  So, past clients: take your photos from our session and turn them into accordion cards and photo pads! Or, heck, grab your photos from your point-and-shoot camera that you took while on vacation this summer; you don’t have to use professional images to take advantage of this resource. Let me know if you have any questions – but you probably won’t, since their website/creation process is pretty intuitive. So go forth and PRINT!

Edited for clarification: I do not sell any Pinhole Press products to my clients. (although sometimes I give them to my clients as gifts!) All the prices listed on the site are consumer-based and available to anyone.

In addition, if you clicked on the links above (as opposed to Googling “Pinhole Press”), upon creating an account, you’ll see a pre-entered “photographer’s code”. Don’t worry, even though you’re not a photographer, you’re perfectly allowed to use the code. That’s there simply so that Pinhole can track where their customers are coming from, and there are no special privileges/differences that go along with it or if you’d like to go without it.

Real Premium Album Sample: Razzie & Cherry

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

I was so excited when the FedEx man knocked on my door yesterday! He was carrying the first-ever (first-ever!) premium album for one of my clients! I’ve only been carrying these incredible products since April, after I attended a photography convention and couldn’t bear to walk away without sharing such beautiful works of art with my clients. They really are amazing – the craftsmanship, the attention to detail that my printers give – it’s flat-out incredible. And when they’re filled with artfully-arranged images of members of your family, jaw-dropping doesn’t even begin to describe them! (I should know – one of my samples features Bailey!)

So here’s the premium album that Razzie & Cherry’s mom ordered. I took a bunch of photos of it today, and hopefully this post gives you a good idea of the beautiful details it includes! She decided on the silk cover album option. It arrives in a plush, padded leather carrying case…

She opted for a silk brocade cover material in black, which has a beautiful mix of texture and silky smoothness.

She also chose to put her dogs’ names on the cover (instead of a photo). For simplicity’s sake, it’s a great choice! A favorite photo could be placed there just as easily.

The pages are wonderfully thick; you’d never rip or tear them.

One of my favorite features about premium albums? We can work quotes into the design! There are SO many wonderful (and touching) quotes about dogs out there, and I already have a small library-size compilation of them to choose from!

We have a little more creative freedom to mix color and black & white photos in premium albums, than compared to a wall gallery. It can be tricky, but done right, the correct photos really POP.

As you can see, the photo stretches across the entire spread. The line you see down the middle is the glare from my office window, not a seam or gutter.

Tomorrow I get to hand off this album to its rightful owner… but it was so fun to see it myself and take a few pictures :)  Thanks so much for letting me play with (and design) your pooches, Christel!

Premium Albums: The Silk Cover

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

Welcome to Part Two of my Premium Album introduction! And really, (I was thinking about this just now) what better way is there to introduce these to you than blogging about them? This way, I can show you ridiculous amounts of photos, so that you can get a grasp on what these albums are like inside and out! Pretty perfect, right? (I know, I know: there’s technically a better way of showing off the albums. Videos. I’m working on that. For now, you get wonderfully long blog posts!)

This album is a fabulous one: the cover is made of silk! That’s right – it’s not a scarf – it’s an album. And it’s made of silk. Excited to see it yet? Without further ado…

The box this album comes in isn’t custom like the photo-cover album, but what it lacks in custom-ness it more than makes up for in luxury. It’s leather, it’s padded, and it’s just fun to hold. Trust me on that one… you’ll love this box.

I believe this is actually the thinnest premium album that I offer…

Augh. It’s a thing of beauty. To me, at least.

Check it out! There’s NO gutter! This album provider takes an actual photographic print (12×24 inches, in this case) and spreads it across the page sides, so the look is completely seamless!

The shiny part you see at the middle-bottom is just light reflecting, from my flashes to take this photo. It’s not a gutter or break in the book.

The pages are thick and sturdy, just like the photo-cover premium album.

This album company provides an extremely customizable product. Don’t like the silk cover? Okay, how about leather? Don’t like leather? Then how about patterned & embossed silk? Don’t like the cover photo inset? We can leave it blank… or would you prefer two photos? There’s pretty much no limit to all the combinations I can make for my clients; and let me tell you, that made choosing a style/design for this sample album incredibly difficult! But I love how this album turned out, and in my opinion, nothing calls for the luxury of silk more than two pampered Westie girls!

If you missed seeing the photo-cover premium album, you can see it here. Stay tuned for Premium Album #3…
