Pepper & Angus, a San Diego Poodle & Goldendoodle!

Friday, October 5th, 2018

“Are they brother & sister?” “Are they the same age?” Pepper & Angus get all kinds of questions from curious people who see them around town… because maybe at first glance, they appear awfully similar! It’s only once you look a little closer and get to know them that you realize they could hardly be more different.

Pepper is a standard poodle, 10 years old and quite the refined little lady. She crosses her paws when she lays down, generally steers clear of her brother’s silly antics, thrives on her independent spirit, and simply has that stately air of a standard poodle that makes you wonder for the quickest moment: is there a human in there? I’m just not convinced that Pepper sees herself as a dog…!

Angus, on the other hand, is a 3-year-old goldendoodle who suffers from “little brother syndrome” to his core, haha! He’s energetic, cheerful, loves to snuggle and make friends, and is simply a happy-go-lucky boy. He was a joy (if somewhat of a challenge) to photograph, and the cherry on top was his bow tie – almost too much cuteness to handle.

For our session, we started with some classic studio portraits and then headed to Balboa Park for a splash of color!

I’m thrilled to introduce you to Angus (left) and Pepper (right)!

I love Pepper’s sweet smile.

Angus wanted to explore every inch of Balboa Park, haha – he’s such a happy pup!

I’m so excited to see their parents back in the studio soon to review all of our images – this was just a “sneak peek” at all the cuteness! Thanks for being such good dogs during your session, Pepper & Angus! :)

Huxley is Not Your Average Toy Poodle – San Diego, CA

Thursday, August 30th, 2018

Aren’t breed stereotypes silly?

I think it’s crazy when people say things like “all labradors love water”, “chihuahuas bark all the time” or even “corgis can’t swim”. There are always exceptions to the rules, and even though breeding for centuries has imprinted some pretty strong instincts on most dogs, I’m reminded how unique each pet’s personality truly is when I meet individuals like Huxley.

Huxley is a toy poodle – so you’d think he just wants to be carried around in a purse, right? Don’t lie, I bet that image flashed into your mind!! Haha – and it’s okay if it did, since toy poodles are phenomenal companion dogs that don’t need tons of exercise, so there are plenty of toy poodles who love that kind of thing. But Huxley, on the other hand, seems to have the body of a toy poodle and the spirit of a rugged outdoorsman! His favorite thing in the world (besides his mom, of course) is hiking. This adorable little guy is happiest on the trail, out in nature, where he can explore the wilderness and breathe the mountain air. And no matter what your preconceived notions are, I know that’s not what you expected when I said “toy poodle”!  :)

So we spent our session at my two most-favorite rustic locations in San Diego, Mission Trails Regional Park and Old Poway Park. We incorporated plenty of outdoorsy elements that Huxley loved, and we had a great time! Plus, he wore his signature red bandana, and I’m pretty sure I’m not as good at fashion as this little poodle is… does that mean I’m stereotyping him after all?! ;)

This is Huxley! He smiles when he runs!!

Okay, to be fair, he smiles all the time.

Are toy poodles especially good at smiling?! Because Huxley always looks so happy! Oh I just love this little boy’s spirit.

Jina and Garrett, it was so great to meet you both & spend the afternoon with Huxley! Can’t wait to get together with you again soon!

Nomi & Nita, Poodle Mixes from North Park

Thursday, June 7th, 2018

You know what I love? Christmas gifts!

You know what I love even more? Christmas gifts in June!

Haha – Nomi & Nita’s mom received a gift certificate for a photo session for Christmas, and decided to spread out the holiday cheer by redeeming it a few months later. So although I had to wait a little while before meeting these cute pups, I have to admit, it was worth the wait – Nomi & Nita are the sweetest dogs! These poodle mixes live in North Park with their moms, and I photographed them both at home and at Presidio Park. And while they may be similar in appearance, they each have completely distinct personalities: Nomi is a little princess, ready to steal the ball from her sister at a moment’s notice, and averse to the idea of a “collar” and “leash” when she would simply prefer to be relaxing in her mom’s arms. Nita is a bit more submissive, happy to let her sister dig out the ball from underneath the couch, and loves to run & romp in new places (as long as her family’s there with her, of course)! So here’s my question for you: think you’ll be able to see their photos without squealing from all the cuteness? Good luck…

Although you’d never know it just from seeing her, Nomi has a rare affliction called mega-esophagus. Her moms have done an incredible, painstaking job of taking care of this sweet girl, and ensuring that she lives safely with this life-threatening issue. And as a result, she rules the roost at home! I just love her big fluffy ears!

This is Nomi, ready to play! Can you tell that she’s a poodle-chihuahua mix? She doesn’t have any medical issues like her sister, because their moms deserve to have at least one low-maintenance dog! ;)

What a sight to come home to… I would literally sprint home after work every day if these sweet faces were waiting for me like this, haha!

Tiffany & Kelly, thank you so much for introducing me to your darling girls! I’m excited to see you both again soon! :)

Jesse James, the Miniature Poodle from San Diego

Thursday, March 9th, 2017

I know what you’re thinking: with a name like “Jesse James”, this dog must be an adventurous, active little troublemaker! And you’d be right… I think. But if you’re right, you’re about 5-10 years late. These days, Jesse the miniature poodle is 15 years old, and his daily life is a bit more slow-paced than it used to be. He’s definitely earned the privilege to relax a bit more than he used to… in fact, he normally wakes up between 10-11 am each day! (Now that’s the kind of lifestyle I can appreciate, haha!) But truthfully, I have the feeling he was never the “troublemaker” that his namesake implies; he’s much too sweet to give his parents any kind of headache. At every turn during our photo session, he was looking to them for guidance & reassurance that he was doing the right thing, and of course they were happy to give him plenty of love & encouragement. He’s so devoted to them, and it’s so clear within just a few minutes of meeting them all. So I simply can’t imagine this boy misbehaving! Ever! (Although he used to have a much more reliable “down” than he does now, from what I’m told… apparently now “down” is only for naptime! Ha!)

We had a wonderful photo session at Jesse’s home in Clairemont. His moms have some of the most colorful, cheery, creative home decor I’ve ever seen – and I loved working with Jesse in the place where he’s most comfortable. It was the perfect spot for our session! And unfortunately some recent health issues have cropped up, making it unwise for Jesse to do much physical exercise… so it was a low-key, comfortable, relaxing afternoon… with plenty of treats, of course!

This is Jesse, sitting on one of his moms’ many colorful rugs. How can you resist such a sweet face?

I love Jesse’s backyard. It’s almost as gorgeous as he is.

He was able to see me off from his front doorway at the end of our session! (How much would you love to come home to this view?!)

Evelyn & Deb, thank you so much for introducing me to your handsome boy. I’m looking forward to seeing you both again soon!  :)

Lola the Gorgeous Standard Poodle! (Rancho Santa Fe Pet Photography Session)

Wednesday, May 11th, 2016

I think rescue dogs know when they’ve been rescued. They know when their life changes; when they have a loving, happy home and they’re a treasured member of the family, when beforehand there was more pain & suffering than love & stability. I think they know. And Lola the standard poodle definitely knows just how lucky she is.

This Rancho Santa Fe pet photography session features the gorgeous Lola, an all-black standard poodle, who was rescued from a very poor beginning in life. She’s still less than a year old, but for her first 4 months or so, she was brought up in absolutely deplorable conditions. She didn’t even know how to drink water out of a bowl, because she wasn’t given bowls of water as a puppy, much less toys or treats, or any basic facets of a puppy’s life. Can you imagine?! Who could do that to such a sweet creature – any animal, really – I have no idea, but thankfully Lola’s mom Debra came along, and she rescued her to live a fabulous life! Lola & Debra live in a beautiful, safe neighborhood in Rancho Santa Fe, and they simply couldn’t be happier together. They’re best friends! And Lola absolutely adores her mom: she follows her around as close as a shadow, always ready to jump up to face-height to say hello up close, haha! In fact, Lola’s life is so filled with love these days, that as our photo session wrapped up and I was giving Debra a hug goodbye, Lola jumped up to join the hug too!! It was absolutely hysterical – she just doesn’t want to be excluded from any bit of love & affection she sees around her (especially a hug with her mom)! Haha! What an adorable, goofy pup. :)

This is Lola. Such a sweetheart.

She absolutely loves running around her backyard! Action photos turned out to be a significant part of our session, thanks to her boundless energy!

Sigh. This dog is gorgeous.

Debra, I had a great time with you & Lola during our photo session! I’m excited to show you the rest of our photos very soon!
