Della & Clyde, the German Shepherd Puppy & Dachshund!

Friday, November 21st, 2014

Brace yourself – you’re about to see TONS of cuteness in this blog post! :)

I had an absolute blast at my session with Della & Clyde! Della is a 4-month-old German shepherd puppy, and even as German shepherd puppies go, this girl is beautiful. Clyde is an 8-year-old dachshund (half wirehaired, half shorthaired!) and he’s a super-handsome little guy with just a bit of scruff… but what was even more fun to see than their adorable faces was the way they’re so attached to one another! Della is much bigger, of course, and she’s still growing, but she plays gently with little Clyde (well, mostly gently) and they are absolutely inseparable! They constantly want to see each other, play with each other, be close to each other… their friendship is so touching to see!

For our session, we started at the studio and then headed to beautiful Balboa Park. Both dogs did wonderfully at each location, and even though we didn’t make it to the beach like we planned (boooo, cloudy weather!) I’m already a bit nervous at how big their parents’ gallery is going to be! There were already too many images to pick from for their sneak peek… so this is just a small sample of everything to come for these two pups!

This is Della! Can you even handle that adorable head tilt?!

And this is Clyde! He has a much more serious demeanor, and never likes to be more than two inches away from his parents or Della… but we managed to coax him away for a few photos with the help of some delicious treats!

We played fetch at Balboa Park – and this was Della’s first time off-leash in public! She did soooo well, and was totally focused on that squeaky ball, running straight back to her dad with it every time! Yay, Della!

Clyde runs with Della but can’t quite keep up… so sometimes he prefer to relax instead.

Okay, one more – I can’t resist – these two are such a sweet little pair!

Tom & Dale, thank you both for a wonderful afternoon, and for all your help wrangling these two! I simply can’t wait to show you the rest of our photos! :)

Best Friends Photo Session with Bella & Phalen!

Monday, October 20th, 2014

There are some photo sessions that go off without a single hitch; we schedule a time to get together, everything goes as planned, no surprises come up, and it’s a wonderfully simple process overall. No one has to reschedule, everyone is on time to the session, and there’s no pressure or time constraints that would limit us from rescheduling even if we had to. In a word, it just goes smoothly. And honestly, this is usually what happens with the vast majority of my clients.

However, this was NOT one of those sessions! :p

For whatever reason, crazy difficulty after crazy difficulty struck when Bella & Phalen’s parents & I were trying to get together. First, just 72 hours before our original session date, my car was broken into and my spare camera bag was stolen, unfortunately. Ugh. So we had to reschedule for a time when I could get new equipment up & running… and then I got the news that Bella had torn her ACL. The poor thing! So the surgery was scheduled for just days after our new session date, which meant there could be no-such-thing as rain that day! We simply didn’t have time to reschedule again. And finally, after a fun morning up at Earthwise Pet Supply‘s Halloween party on the day of our session, twenty miles away from the studio, my car battery decided to die. Gah!!! So after all these difficulties, and against the odds, I can still hardly believe that our actual photo session went off without a hitch, once we finally got it going! So I want to give a ton of recognition (and thanks!) to Bella & Phalen’s parents, for being so incredibly flexible & ready to roll with the punches. They’re champs and I’m lucky to have such incredible people as clients!

And as it turns out, Bella & Phalen aren’t technically brother & sister – they’re neighbors! That’s why I call this a “doggy best friends” photo session; these two don’t live together but they’re practically inseparable anyway! They go to the same doggy daycare and play together all day, and once they come home they’re still anxious to see each other & romp around! Honestly, these two have a connection that’s rare, in my opinion… their relationship is amazing. And I don’t usually accept sessions with dogs from different families, but these two are so much like brother & sister, I just couldn’t resist capturing them together. So enough talk – let me introduce you!

Bella the golden retriever is a decorated Canine Good Citizen with a huge assortment of obedience ribbons, medals & certificates; she’s an incredibly smart & happy dog that simply lives to please her mother!

Phalen the Keeshond hasn’t been through the same training regimen, but he has an unflaggingly cheerful personality and dashing good looks to make up for it! And he’s only the second Keeshond I’ve ever worked with; this is a rare breed, and his dad did lots of research before deciding that it would be right for him. And of course, they’re perfect together! :)

As much as I love the studio, and how it really lets a dog’s beauty take center stage without any visual distractions, there’s nothing like the natural light of the outdoors. We headed to the park for a few environmental photos, and I love the results!

Don’t you love the halo of light around each dog’s head? I love working with long-haired dogs in the sun!

Everyone, Bella could use your prayers and happy thoughts as she heads into surgery this Thursday. I know I’ll be thinking about her! Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery so she can run around with Phalen again as soon as possible.

April & Arron, thank you again for your patience & flexibility! I can’t wait to see you both again soon!

Wilson the San Diego Corgi, in Presidio Park!

Sunday, October 19th, 2014

Wilson is a happy San Diego corgi that I met at a recent Yappy Hour for Camp Bow Wow! He was enjoying a puptini (!) and wearing a classic corgi smile all night, so I knew photographing him would be a relatively easy job – since that handsome smile is practically always on his face! Corgis are some of the happiest dogs I know, and Wilson is a cheerful, handsome tricolor who lives with his parents in Alpine. He’s just a puppy, so his obedience isn’t 100% all there yet – his mom told me stories of chasing Wilson all over their neighborhood! – but I think as time goes on he’ll be relatively easy to train, since he absolutely loves to eat treats & please his parents. So of course, we had a great photo session – because I’m always pretty liberal with the treats, haha! :)

Look at that smile! And those posing skills! Wilson was simply fantastic to work with.

Wilson even showed me the spot in the park where his parents got married! How fun is that?!

And then we found some tall grasses, where Wilson pretended he was hiding… but really he just kept on smiling at me.

Thanks again for a wonderful afternoon, Debbie & Bob! I can’t wait to see you both again soon! :)

Dog Photography in the Park: Session with Rusty, Cleo & Tucker

Tuesday, October 7th, 2014

I shared a fun & beautiful photo session with three little dogs recently – and two of them might look familiar to my regular blog readers! If you saw Cleo & Tucker’s blog post a few months ago, you already know how adorable my subjects for this session are – and this time they brought their friend with them, a dachshund named Rusty! I arrived at our park location and was greeted with a cacophony of barking & yipping, as all three dogs were waiting anxiously to get started! And indeed, they all posed for the camera like little champs. (Even Rusty, the “newbie”, haha!) It’s a good thing Cleo & Tucker were there to show him the ropes…

We met in beautiful San Dieguito County Park, in Solana Beach. It’s a dog-friendly park, and a perfect spot for photo sessions. I don’t ever recommend doing photo sessions in dog parks, but parks that are dog-friendly (just not specifically for dogs) are perfect! Dog park photography sessions would include dozens of other dogs in the photos, and it’d be near impossible to get & keep my subject’s attention… whereas parks where dogs are welcome (sometimes even when they’re off-leash!) are typically less crowded, better-maintained & better spots overall! So thanks to my clients for trusting me when I discourage them from dog park photography, for aesthetic reasons… even if the dog park is their pup’s favorite place in town!

This is Tucker, the goofball of the group. He’s a chihuahua mix and I just love his larger-than-life ears. He may not be the smartest dog in the group, but like his mom says, “it’s a good thing he’s so cute!” haha!

This is Cleo, the queen of speed! She’s completely ball-obsessed, and definitely put my action photography skills to the test… look at that focus! Cleo would play fetch until she collapses; there’s no “off” button on this girl!

And this is their friend, photo-session-first-timer Rusty! He’s 11 years old, and has a bit of a distinguished old soul spirit that somehow combines with the fun-loving nature of a dachshund… he was so much fun to work with! I know he means the world to his mom, and I absolutely loved meeting & photographing him!

Robbi & Cyndi, thank you for a lovely afternoon in the park! I had a fabulous time with you & your dogs. I can’t wait to see you both in the studio again soon!

A Golden Retriever with his Family: Bachi

Monday, May 20th, 2013

Even though I’m leaving town incredibly soon, I’m still meeting local dogs! Yes, I should probably be packing and beginning to look for a new house in San Diego… but here I am with a camera on my neck! And I am so glad – otherwise I wouldn’t have met Bachi! He’s Beckham‘s friend from Niceville, and for our session we visited a gorgeous dock on the water and Bachi’s favorite neighborhood park. His human siblings were willing to jump in a bunch of the photos, too, which I love – check it out!

We couldn’t have had a more beautiful day! Thanks for cooperating with my tight schedule, weather gods!

Bachi & his sister Gina are especially close; I love so many of the photos of them together!

Bachi, I know I tuckered you out during our session… I promise I won’t make you “work” so hard when I come over again this week! :)

Thanks Rosie, Gina & Scott, for an absolutely delightful time! Can’t wait to see you all again soon!
