Duke, the Impossibly Popular Dog – San Diego, CA

Monday, July 6th, 2015

I cried in the car, most of the way home.

When a client books a photo session because their dog doesn’t have much time left, well, it’s never easy… certainly not for my clients and not for me either. And upon meeting Duke, it was pretty clear that his joyful life was nearing its end: his neurological issues have taken away most of his control of his back legs, so he walks/hobbles everywhere he goes. His parents are now in the habit of carrying Duke up & down the stairs to their second-floor apartment every day… which is something they hoped they’d never have to do. But despite his physical limitations, Duke’s amazing, radiant personality shined through every second of our session – and that’s why he left me overjoyed to have known him, but heartbroken to know that his time left is measured in days.

But I bet you’re wondering why I called Duke an “impossibly popular” dog! If you had spent about two minutes with us in Balboa Park, you’d know why: it’s because his personality is absolutely magnetic! Family after family, person after person, we were practically bombarded with people who wanted to meet Duke! He was a conversation piece for people with & without dogs to approach us & compliment his handsome looks… it was practically overwhelming! I mean, to be honest with you, my photo sessions are always somewhat attention-getting in public, and I’m accustomed to people stopping to watch (and even taking a few pictures of me as I work!). But this was a whole new level of attention. And Duke’s parents are used to all the fuss; they say that people who are scared of dogs feel safe around Duke, that anti-dog people (are there such people?!?) stop to pet him & chat. And of course, Duke makes friends with every dog he meets. His popularity literally crosses the bounds of species – and honestly, it’s amazing to witness!

Whew – enough chatter! Let’s get to the photos! :)

This is Duke, with his permanent big grin.

Despite his back legs’ issues, Duke wanted nothing more than to run around at the park! And he can still move pretty fast!

He loves that tennis ball. Loves it. Sometimes he even gets vocal about it…

And last but not least, we visited one of Duke’s favorite spots in the world, the Coronado dog beach. I think he could have walked in circles up & down the beach with his big ball all day long… and I think he’ll be running along the sand at the big beach in the sky, right after he crosses the Rainbow Bridge.

Brian & Russ, thank you so much for introducing me to your handsome boy. What a special dog. I’m really looking forward to showing you the rest of our photos soon.

Cherry the San Diego German Shepherd, in Presidio Park

Sunday, June 14th, 2015

Can I just start by saying that I love German shepherds? I simply adore them. I think they’re gorgeous dogs, and the way they can be tough & intimidating one second and goofy & happy the next second is just so amazing! So I was thrilled when Cherry, a stunning San Diego German shepherd, and her parents won a recent giveaway for a gift certificate toward a photo session!

I met Cherry at Presidio Park, where we braved a few June Gloom clouds for what turned out to be great photography conditions! And I started the photo session the way I always do, by slowly & gently acclimating the dog to my camera. I really take my time when I do this, because I don’t want the dog to feel unsure or scared about the camera or the lens – since that’s where I want them looking most of the time, after all! Cherry didn’t seem to be scared, even when I clicked the shutter for the first time – and then her dad explained why: Cherry had been active in Shutzhund training, which is intense obedience & skills training for German shepherds… and they regularly fire guns off around the dogs, to desensitize them to the noise! So, yeah, my camera shutter? Didn’t even matter! :)

And for the rest of our photo session, Cherry was a simply perfect model – she was willing to sit or lay down (“platz”!) anywhere we asked, and I was so impressed at how well she listened to the commands her dad gave. Of course, she’s still a happy-go-lucky dog, so there were times she showed us what she wanted to do, instead of the other way around, haha… but overall she was a dream come true to work with! :)

Oh, Cherry – you are gorgeous. I can’t even handle it.

Look at this girl move! She’s an athlete!

See what I mean? Cherry was willing to pose wherever we asked – even this unique spot!

Thank you, Beth & Ron, for such a fun afternoon! (And thanks again for the cupcake – it was delicious!) I’m excited to see you both again soon!

Mini-Sessions! (San Diego Pet Photography Event)

Friday, June 5th, 2015

I have to admit, my recent mini-session event was an experiment.

I haven’t put together anything on this scale – an entire weekend of back-to-back-to-back photo sessions – in a long time, and never in California. So I really wasn’t sure how things would go… would I be able to stick to my schedule? Would there be lots of interest, or not very much? Would the dogs be able to work in a 15-minute time limit? Would I?

Well… as it turns out, the event was a huge success!!! Yay! I couldn’t be more thrilled! The weather was absolutely lovely (slightly overcast, perfect for the park!), we were able to stick to the tight schedule (with help from my awesome hubby!), and the dogs all posed like total pros! 15 minutes turned out to be plenty of time for a mini-session; I was able to easily deliver a variety of 10+ images to each client, just like I promised. (Which is a small number compared to the few dozen that my full-length session clients see, but hey, for a minimal investment of time, I was pretty happy with the results!)

By Sunday night, I was just as drained as my camera’s empty battery… we were both exhausted! But my mini-session clients have been loving their images, and I’ve really enjoyed giving them a taste of the award-winning photography experience that I’ve become known for. All in all, it was a fabulous weekend – and I simply can’t resist sharing a few of my favorite images with you! So here’s a very small selection of mini-session photos! Enjoy!

This is Zephyr! Isn’t he handsome? I just love the way he looks lovingly up at his mom.

So was Murphy, the golden retriever – as long as you’d throw his frisbee! This pup is frisbee-obsessed!

He’s also quite gorgeous in black & white.

And Molly the goldendoodle is, too!

Okay, okay, one more of Molly – because she does the cutest trick! She carries her own leash! What a handy dog, haha!

After spending Saturday in the park, I headed inside to the studio on Sunday. This adorable matching duo is Kinlie & Karma!

… it wasn’t long, though, before Kinlie was giving me attitude. :)

And this little nugget is Mitzi…

… she and her French bulldog siblings all visited the studio! This “butt shot” was a special request from her mom, and I love how it turned out, haha!

And although you may not think of French bulldogs as athletes, Mitzi will do anything for her toy – including jump high in the air!

Okay – you made it to the bottom of this post – so are you ready for the good news?

We had so much fun over the mini-session weekend that I’ve decided to do it again! Mark your calendar for November 21 & 22! I’ve planned another mini-session weekend that’s just in time for including your pets in this year’s Christmas cards… and I couldn’t be more excited! We’re bound to have a blast! :)

Photo Session with Tricolor Dogs Tate & Skyler!

Thursday, May 14th, 2015

I’m so excited to share this photo session with you! And I know calling these dogs “tricolor” isn’t very descriptive… but for two pups with no identifiable breeding and yet look like they might have been separated at birth, that’s the best I can come up with! Haha! :) Tate & Skyler weren’t separated at birth, though; Tate is a 3-year-old border collie mix, says his DNA test, and Skyler is a 10-month-old Siberian husky/Rottweiler/border collie/sheltie mix (whew!) according to her DNA results. Regardless, both dogs are gorgeous, fluffy lovebugs and I had an absolute blast playing with – I mean, photographing them! :)

I really enjoyed getting to know these pups’ beyond the surface during our Dalmatian Package. Because for as similar as they look physically, they have incredibly distinct personalities – Tate has come a long, long way in becoming less dog-reactive since his mom adopted him. They’ve worked hard for him not to freak out upon seeing another dog, even at a distance… and today, you’d never guess that it was an issue he struggled with so much! His mom Robbin has done such an incredible job helping him overcome his fears! Skyler, on the other hand, is a happy-go-lucky puppy who’s “a sweetheart 95% of the time”, Robbin says! Luckily, she was a sweetheart 100% of the time for our photo session, haha – and I never got tired of photographing her beautiful smile. (Seriously – this pup could be a doggie model!) Skyler loves to play, too, but she leaves the task of fetching tennis balls to her brother – otherwise he completely runs her over as he charges toward the ball! But I think it’s still safe to say that playing together is their favorite pastime.

Okay, enough storytime – I simply can’t wait any longer to show you their photos!

This is Tate! He was pretty much a pro at posing for the camera, don’t you think?

And this gorgeous girl is Skyler! How beautiful is she?!

And here’s one of several portraits that both dogs were willing to pose for together… I was so impressed at how willing they were to snuggle up together & smile for the camera, time after time!

Robbin (and Jen), thank you so much for a wonderful afternoon! I hope you had as much fun as I did – and I can’t wait to show you the rest of our photos! :)

Oscar, the San Diego Wheaten Terrier!

Tuesday, April 21st, 2015

Oh boy – I am so excited to tell you about this adorable San Diego wheaten terrier, Oscar! I was thrilled to meet him a few weeks ago at the Navy Woof Walk, a super-fun local event, where he & his parents found my booth. Honestly, I did a double-take when I first saw him, because the Wheaten terrier breed is rather uncommon… and also because it’s the same breed as my childhood dog!! The very first dog my family owned was a Wheaten terrier, and I named him Sparky (because I was especially creative as a 9-year-old, ha). So I feel a special affinity toward Wheatens whenever I see them… and as luck would have it, Oscar’s mom won the drawing that day for a $100 gift certificate! I couldn’t have been more thrilled to learn that she was the lucky winner, and seeing Oscar again was absolutely delightful! He has a constant smile on his face that’s positively infectious… this is one happy (and treat-motivated) dog! He actually has a rather busy schedule these days: Oscar is a therapy dog! He visits local schools on a regular basis to interact with kids, and his mom told me all about the good work he does around the San Diego & Rancho Bernardo communities. So don’t be surprised if you see his cute face around town! :)

This is Oscar! Can you stand how cute he is?! (I cannot.)

He strikes a lovely profile in black & white, too.

I’m pretty sure this moment occurred right before he leaped up to get the treats in my hand! Haha!

Okay, fine, one more photo… this one’s a little blooper! :)

Thank you, Luanne & Alan, for introducing me to your handsome boy! I had a great time with all three of you! :)
