Super-Fun Pet Photography Session with Roxy & Madison!

Thursday, June 12th, 2014

I can’t begin to tell you what a FUN pet photography session I had with sisters Roxy & Madison! Roxy is an 11-year-old labrador who takes it slow these days, and Madison is a 2-year-old Cavachon (that’s a Cavalier King Charles spaniel & Bichon Frise mix) that has all the energy in the world! So in fact, it was a bit of a challenge for me behind the lens, balancing & bringing out the best in these two very different personalities. I learned that Roxy, uncharacteristic to her labrador breeding, doesn’t like the water – but then again, she likes snuggling on the couch and eating anything at all, which are very labrador-esque qualities! Madison is a little fireball whose favorite treat is bits of cheese; she was a joy to photograph because she was up for anything (as long as cheese was involved) and always had a smile on her face! I absolutely love these dogs… they’re both happy girls who are absolutely devoted to their parents – who, by the way, own the very best doggie daycare & boarding center in all of El Cajon! It was a privilege to work with the fabulous people behind Camp Bow Wow, and we’re in the midst of putting together a few special offers for each of our clientele… stay tuned for more info on those specials, here and on my Facebook page and their page too.

This is Roxy! (And her mom!)

Studio Pet Photography for Dogs & Cats – Featuring the Animals of La Jolla Colony Vet Hospital!

Tuesday, May 6th, 2014

This studio pet photography session had its beginnings a few weeks ago, at the Helen Woodward Animal Center Puppy Love 5k event… I was chatting with many of the runners & walkers as they came back from the race, and a woman with an adorable, border-collie-mix dog walks up to my booth! I came out from behind my table to meet her dog, we get to talking, and eventually she introduces herself as a veterinarian and the new owner of La Jolla Colony Veterinary Hospital! She asked me about working together on some new decor for her clinic’s lobby, and of course I was happy to oblige! I absolutely love working with local businesses, and if I can give fellow entrepreneurs a few pieces of art that makes them love their business just a little bit more – especially if it features their own pets! – then I consider it a match made in heaven! :)

So imagine my surprise when she told me that I wouldn’t just be working with her border collie mix, Mony – but also with her terrier mix dog and her two cats! Cats in the studio?! That’s only happened a few times before, with – ahem – mixed results, so I knew this would be a verrrrry interesting session! Let me introduce you to the stars of the show…

This is Mony (left) and Daisy Mae (right)! Mony is a border collie/spaniel mix, and Daisy is… well… a big question mark! She has terrier in her heritage, that’s for sure, but after that your guess is as good as mine. Mony is 5 and Daisy is 10, but both have the energy level of a 1-year-old! I just love these two!

And here are the brave felines that came along, too! Just wait until you hear their names – and I don’t mind telling you, since their mom is a vet and you know she loves them very much (even if their names don’t exactly suggest that they’re beloved members of the family): Booger & Skidmark! Haha!! I laughed out loud when I heard that! Even more interesting: you’d never guess it from their photos, but these kitties are actually littermates! Despite their hesitance, I really enjoyed working with them both – we put the “pet” in studio pet photography session, rather than giving all the attention to their canine siblings… cats deserve their time in the studio, too!

Sarah & Ben, I loved getting together with you both – thank you for bringing everyone in to the studio (I know it wasn’t easy)! I can’t wait to see these fluffy faces on the walls of your new clinic! :)

Loews Surf Dog Competition 2013 – Imperial Beach, San Diego, CA

Monday, June 24th, 2013

What an incredible day at the beach! Sun, sand, and surfing dogs – add in a few doggles and you can’t beat that combination! Saturday was the 8th Annual Loews Surf Dog Competition, and let me tell you, if you weren’t there, you missed out! The streets of Imperial Beach were jam-packed with cars for miles in every direction; I was shocked at how many people & dogs were there. Then again, this was my first-ever dog surfing competition, so I didn’t know what I was getting myself into… still, I think anyone would have said “wow” upon seeing thousands of human & canine spectators in one place! It was awesome to see everyone supporting the dogs out there in the water; there were huge rounds of applause and cheers for any dog that successfully rode in to shore! And of course plenty of “oooh”s and laughs at the wipeouts! Check out a few of my favorite photos from the event!

This is Abbie Girl, an Australian kelpie & the champion of the small dog category! She was a total pro.

Sometimes I found the people’s faces just as amusing as the dogs’! Heehee!

And let’s give a little credit to the people out there! I think the dogs may have actually had a pretty easy time, just standing on those boards… their human helpers were always in prime position to get smacked by the waves!

This guy was such a goofball – and a great surfer, too!

I was SO impressed by the dogs that actually shared surfboards!! These two worked the board like it was nothing.

Here’s another reason the event was so exciting: we were in the presence of celebrities!  This is Ricochet, a service dog that surfs with people with disabilities! She’s an incredible surfer and a beautiful spirit. Check out her website here, and if the videos there don’t make you cry or at least tear up, well, you’re stronger than me. She also has a super-active Facebook page!

And here’s the one-and-only Tillman! He’s mostly famous for skateboarding (check out the video that made him famous; it has 20 million hits, no big deal) but he was out there on a surfboard on Saturday! He won the large dog competition!

Dogs of all different shapes & sizes were out there..

The day was gorgeous, of course – it’s San Diego! (gorgeous enough to give me a bit of a sunburn, unfortunately. haha oh well.)

I found it fascinating that there were photographers out there, in the waves, with waterproof casings for their cameras! That is DEFINITELY where I want to be next year!!

This photo sums up the spirit of the day, I think – goooo surf dogs! The cheers were so loud! :)

Whew, that was a lot of photos! And believe it or not, these were just my favorite images from the whole event! If you’d like to see more, or if your dog surfed and you’d like to purchase a print or digital image, visit the event gallery here: http://proofs.allisonshamrell.com.

Oh, and here’s something fun: my photos from the competition were internationally published! Here’s the story from the UK Daily Mail, which asked for my photos to include in their article! I thought I’d left the world of journalism photography behind a few years ago… apparently not! :)

I hope you enjoyed seeing all the photos of these talented dogs! If you’ve never been here before, welcome! You’re visitng my blog, which is where I post about recent events (like this one) and sessions. My website is different; it’s where you can check out my whole portfolio and find info about a session with your dogs! Last but not least, my Facebook page is a pretty fun place too! :) Take a look, click “like”, and you’ll get to see more fun photos like these in your newsfeed!

Thanks for visiting!  :)

Bailey in San Diego

Friday, June 14th, 2013

So, I feel like I haven’t written many blog/Facebook posts lately. Or at least not a proportionate amount compared to all the activity that’s going on over here! To tell you the truth, I’ve been working hard doing lots of “behind-the-scenes” things, like getting ready to make friends with other San Diego pet-related business owners, meeting other local pet photographers, and exploring the local neighborhoods to get a feel for what’s where. And while I haven’t been meeting lots of new dogs lately, like I normally do when sessions are in full swing, I’ve been spending plenty of time with Bailey. I love my girl so much – she just turned 4 on Monday! It was a great day and we didn’t have the slight fiasco of Birthday #3. We even spent the weekend with her doing extra-special fun things, like visiting the Coronado Dog Beach and joining my extended family in Los Angeles for a barbecue!

I would post a new photo of Bailey at Coronado, but in the moving chaos, I can’t find my card reader. GAH. So here’s an oldie but a goodie :)

san diego dog socialization

However, I have a confession to make.

In the first year we had Bailey, I’d like to think we did a pretty great job at socializing her. When we adopted her, she was 6 months old – found in the middle of nowhere when she was 4 months old – and we took her to the dog beach most Sundays, constantly met other dogs on our walks, and generally took her with us whenever we could. She was a happy, social dog!

But after that first year, we moved farther away from that dog beach, and pretty far (a solid 25-minute drive) from dog parks too. We were lucky enough to move into a neighborhood with several playful dogs, and Bailey got along fabulously with them! But those dogs became 95% of her dog-to-dog interactions. I’ll admit it – we got lazy. With long walks in a neighborhood where we could let her off-leash and run, what could possibly be wrong with a few less trips to the dog beach? So we thought.

san diego social dog

Bailey has been stressed since we moved: she spent 3 whole days in a car, and we’d never boarded her before but she spent almost a week at Bark Boulevard while we visited Portland. So who can blame her for being stressed? But I’ve noticed in the trips that we’ve taken to San Diego dog parks so far that she’s not getting along with other pups as well as she used to. And maybe a dog behaviorist can help me out with the “why” behind this, but she seems to be quite particular about other dogs that she simply doesn’t like. And then she gives them a hard time: barkling, growling, snarling, etc. She never attacks – my gosh that would be horrible! – just makes it very clear that the other dog is not her friend.

It doesn’t happen often; probably with 5% of all the dogs she meets. If that. I certainly don’t mean to say that she’s lost all her social skills! She usually loves to meet other dogs, and she typically plays just fine with new friends! But every dog parent wants their pup to be social and sweet with everyone they meet… And as much as I’d like to play innocent and say “I have no idea why she’s like this all of a sudden”, I’m pretty sure all the evidence is right in front of me. Less socialization over the past couple of years. Stress of moving across the country and all the chaos that comes with it. In general, just less-than-ideal situations for my girl.

san diego dog

I feel guilty for how things have gone, so I’m making San Diego a new beginning! I’ve resolved to take Bailey out to dog parks and beaches MUCH more often than I used to! And since San Diego is incredibly dog-friendly, we can take her out to restaurants and more places too! It’s going to be great; we’ll get to spend more time with her and hopefully she’ll decide that more & more dogs are her friends. I’ll keep you updated on how it goes; I know nothing will happen overnight but I’m trying to create a pattern of lots of positive interactions. Hopefully my knowledge of dog psychology will help the process along.

I’ll always respect Bailey’s limits. I can promise you that. But until she tells me she’s had enough, I’m going to socialize the crap out of her. :)

Mixed Breed Dog Photography: Daly’s New Beach House!

Thursday, May 16th, 2013

I’ve said it before and I’ll said it again: I am so lucky to have the clients I have. I couldn’t stop thinking about that during Daly’s session. Her always-fabulous mom Elaine thought it’d be fun to get more photos of Daly at their new beach house, and I was happy to oblige! Any excuse to get on the beach is good enough for me, but it was extra-exciting to see the new house that they were just in the beginning stages of planning when we had our session last year! It’s almost done & they’ll move in soon, but we opted to stay outside for our session – and when you see the view, you’ll know why!

Daly LOVES the tall grasses in her new backyard… she reminded me of a lion hunting in the savanna! (like someone else I know…)

Daly even attempted to recreate her mom’s favorite photo from last time! From the studio to the beach!

Elaine, it was my pleasure, as always – see you soon! :)
