Yuma the Del Mar Mutt!

Wednesday, July 15th, 2015

As you know, here in southern California, we rarely have trouble with the weather. Sure, it rains sometimes (although apparently not enough, with this drought!) and despite what our out-of-town friends think, it’s not 70 and sunny every day… but usually, I don’t have much trouble at all scheduling photo sessions. A rain date? That’s being pretty darn cautious. Usually. But for this session, Yuma & her mom had to be extra-patient with the weather, much more so than most of my clients – we had to reschedule no less than four times!! Completely crazy, right?! Gah – they definitely win the Most Patient Clients Award!

But it turns out, making sure we got together on a day with good weather was definitely worth the wait. The beach in Del Mar was absolutely gorgeous, and Yuma was more than happy to model for us in front of blue skies and soft puffy clouds! Yuma is an adorable little Del Mar mutt, and I think she could have run up & down the sand chasing her tennis ball all day long! I absolutely fell in love with her cute little grin and small floppy ears… what a fun photo session!

She sprinted through the surf so quickly! But the funniest part was watching her try and pick up the tennis ball, once she caught up with it… let’s just say that part was a struggle! I think she needs to work on her hand-eye-mouth-paw coordination! :)

(Side note: does this photo look pixelated to you? It seems to have uploaded oddly… but no worries, we have plenty of tack-sharp action photos of Yuma – this is just one of many!)

Look at that grin. She kills me… so stinking cute!

Like I said – good weather is always worth the wait.

Whitney, thank you for a great afternoon! (And Phyllis, thank you for introducing us!) I’m excited to get together with you again soon!

Duke, the Impossibly Popular Dog – San Diego, CA

Monday, July 6th, 2015

I cried in the car, most of the way home.

When a client books a photo session because their dog doesn’t have much time left, well, it’s never easy… certainly not for my clients and not for me either. And upon meeting Duke, it was pretty clear that his joyful life was nearing its end: his neurological issues have taken away most of his control of his back legs, so he walks/hobbles everywhere he goes. His parents are now in the habit of carrying Duke up & down the stairs to their second-floor apartment every day… which is something they hoped they’d never have to do. But despite his physical limitations, Duke’s amazing, radiant personality shined through every second of our session – and that’s why he left me overjoyed to have known him, but heartbroken to know that his time left is measured in days.

But I bet you’re wondering why I called Duke an “impossibly popular” dog! If you had spent about two minutes with us in Balboa Park, you’d know why: it’s because his personality is absolutely magnetic! Family after family, person after person, we were practically bombarded with people who wanted to meet Duke! He was a conversation piece for people with & without dogs to approach us & compliment his handsome looks… it was practically overwhelming! I mean, to be honest with you, my photo sessions are always somewhat attention-getting in public, and I’m accustomed to people stopping to watch (and even taking a few pictures of me as I work!). But this was a whole new level of attention. And Duke’s parents are used to all the fuss; they say that people who are scared of dogs feel safe around Duke, that anti-dog people (are there such people?!?) stop to pet him & chat. And of course, Duke makes friends with every dog he meets. His popularity literally crosses the bounds of species – and honestly, it’s amazing to witness!

Whew – enough chatter! Let’s get to the photos! :)

This is Duke, with his permanent big grin.

Despite his back legs’ issues, Duke wanted nothing more than to run around at the park! And he can still move pretty fast!

He loves that tennis ball. Loves it. Sometimes he even gets vocal about it…

And last but not least, we visited one of Duke’s favorite spots in the world, the Coronado dog beach. I think he could have walked in circles up & down the beach with his big ball all day long… and I think he’ll be running along the sand at the big beach in the sky, right after he crosses the Rainbow Bridge.

Brian & Russ, thank you so much for introducing me to your handsome boy. What a special dog. I’m really looking forward to showing you the rest of our photos soon.

Outdoors-Loving Dogs Emerson, Russell & Bells!

Saturday, January 24th, 2015

In any career, I think, there are projects that go smoothly and projects that, well, don’t go as smoothly. And it’s no different for me; honestly, most of my sessions are scheduled without any issues, go off without a hitch, and there aren’t any moments of unexpectedness, confusion or frustration. Unfortunately, though, this was NOT one of those sessions! My clients & I truly fought the odds for Emerson, Russell & Bells’ session to happen: first, two out of three dogs were feeling bad at the beginning of the week! Bells had stepped on a stick while out for a run with her mom, and it left a gash between her paw pads… and Russell came down with a sickness that required an intestinal antibiotic for inflammation! Both dogs were feeling miserable – certainly not photo shoot-ready – and so we had to play it by ear & see how they were feeling by the end of the week. Luckily, they felt better, and despite a random case of car sickness on their way to the studio, our session started smoothly… but then we pulled up to our second location, and found that the parks service had locked us out!! We had our hearts set on visiting Lake Sutherland, but it turns out you can’t get down to the lake unless it’s fishing season… which starts in March. Gah!!! But we turned a negative into a positive by finding a couple of amazing spots to work in, just off the road, which worked absolutely perfectly – they were totally unique and we definitely wouldn’t have the photos that we have now (with gorgeous vistas & long, flowing grasses) if we’d gone straight down to the water’s edge! So despite the – ahem – difficulties, we ended up having a fantastic session & I’m loving our photos of these outdoors-loving dogs! :)

This is Bells, the tough little cattle dog mix who hurt her paw just a few days before our session. She goes on runs with her mom all the time, and we knew we wanted a photo of her “wearing” her mom’s running shoes – how cute is this?! Haha!

This gorgeous mutt is Russell, the usually-healthy dog who came down with a bit of sickness. He was completely back to being himself again in time for our session – and I’m so glad, because I just love his smile! He’s a labrador mix (with pit bull? Great Dane?) and a goofy, happy boy.

And here’s Emerson, the handsome chocolate lab. He tested my skills on getting his ears perked up for his photos; usually that’s a tricky thing to do with greyhounds & whippets, but not labs! Emerson is old & wise, though, and he’d (apparently) seen pretty much all of my tricks before. Good thing I still had a couple up my sleeve, though – that ears-up profile is too good-looking to miss out on!

Shaela & Chris, thank you for battling the odds with me! I can’t wait to show you the rest of our photos soon! :)

Photos of Colin, the Happy Mexican Rescue Dog

Tuesday, January 6th, 2015

Happy 2015! I’m so excited to be writing my first blog post of the new year, and I’m extra-glad that you’re here to see it! :)

Well, I’m happy to report that this year started off with a bang! I had an absolute blast during my session with Colin, a Mexican rescue dog that now lives very happily in San Diego. I know, I say that a lot – and every session is fun, so I’m not fibbing! – but seriously, I could not have possibly asked for a better session to kick off 2015! Colin is a very special dog, with a sweet puppy-like temperament, and the story of how his parents adopted him is absolutely wonderful. (Most people don’t adopt a dog before a major home renovation and an out-of-town vacation, but when the right dog comes along, the idea of “good timing” goes out the window!) I’ve really loved getting to know Colin & his family, and I couldn’t be more excited about our photos!

We started our session in the studio – and Colin’s parents brought peanut butter! Yum! haha :)

Then we headed to the park, where Colin posed like a pro! I couldn’t resist posting this photo, and I know his parents are excited about it too… these purple flowers were a last-minute surprise find – and I adore how they look with Colin’s warm coloring!

And then we hit the beach! Colin loooooooves playing in the water (especially with his toys)!

What a fabulous session… Linda & Sally, I can’t thank you enough for introducing me to your handsome boy! I’m excited to see you both again soon! :)

Puppy Photography Session in Carlsbad, CA with Lily the Terrier Mix

Saturday, June 21st, 2014

Have you ever met a puppy with an old soul? Well I have, and boy did we share an incredible puppy photography session together! Lily the terrier mix is one year old (going on about 12, I think!), and during our photo session she showed me every side of her personality; I saw her puppy curiosity, her snuggly love for her parents, her beautifully stoic seriousness, her goofy run-in-circles-until-I-drop silliness, and finally, a bit of her don’t-take-any-more-pictures-of-me stubbornness! Haha! Lily gave me different expressions in practically every frame I shot, and I’m so excited to dig deeper into her photos and bring out the very best of the best of her sweet brown eyes and scruffy fur. But for now, I just have a sneak peek for you to see, with some of my standout favorite images. But don’t worry – it’s a big one! This session was actually spread out over two days (since puppy attention spans can only last so long), so this is an extra-big sneak peek for her parents. Plus, I’m excited to say that I’ll be seeing Lily again in a few months for a fresh set of puppy photography images to add to this one! So let me introduce you to the cutest little terrier mix with an adorably off-kilter floppy ear!

Can you even handle the cuteness?! That ear is just too much for me!

Whether she was running across the open grass or over the rungs of her agility equipment, Lily gave us more than our fair share of action photos! I think she might have rocket boosters strapped to her feet, just out of sight…

She’s friends with everyone she meets, human or canine… the world is her oyster. Of friendship, of course.

Lily loooooves to hunt geckos! Her terrier heritage really comes out when she’s in the fields of Carlsbad, nose to the ground…

We also spent some relaxing time at home… oh those eyes. Stop it right now. What a snugglebug!

And then Lily came all the way down from Carlsbad to the San Diego studio! I just love the way this little lady steps out.

She looks great on white, gray and black backdrops! I can’t decide which I like better… but I think I’ll keep the black background a surprise for later! :) Here she is, striking a pose on the gray – which really brings out the warm tones in her fur!

Lily, thank you for having the sweetest, biggest eyes and ears that are such a joy to photograph! Starr & John, thank you for an absolutely fabulous couple of afternoons… I can’t tell you how excited I am to visit more locations with you & Lily again in the future! :)
