Kaina’s Mission Hills Pet Photography Session

Wednesday, May 4th, 2016

Kaina the dog is a happy guy – easygoing, relaxed, and always content to be with his parents. You get the feeling he really knows how to enjoy the simple things in life, like a comfortable spot in the shade on a sunny day. And so we had a great time relaxing around his neighborhood during our Mission Hills pet photography session!

The name “Kaina” means “younger brother” in Hawaiian, but Kaina the dog actually shares his backyard with a few younger sisters – who happen to be chickens! That’s right, I got to spend time with two different species during our photo session, and I absolutely loved meeting Kaina’s feathered siblings, who live in a coop out in their family’s backyard area in Mission Hills. But it wasn’t long before Kaina stole the show; he completely won me over with his sweet smile and happy willingness to sit by my side and offer me a paw. I mean, this dog could not be any more adorable. He’s slowing down these days, since he’s not as young as he used to be, so he takes life one day at a time… and to be honest with you, he almost reminds me of an old man who contentedly sits on the porch all day, happy to be comfortable and near the people he loves. (An old man with the cutest little floppy ears, haha!)

Here’s Kaina in his backyard, with the chicken coop and his mom’s favorite kangaroo-paw flowers too!

We also visited Presidio Park, the honorary “backyard” of Mission Hills residents, and had a fun time exploring the scenery there too! We finished up our session at Coronado Beach, but I love how at-home Kaina looks amongst the lush greenery of the park.

Have I mentioned that Kaina loves spending time with his parents? I don’t think anything makes him happier.

Mary & Rob, thank you for such a fun afternoon! I’m so glad we were able to get together on a tight schedule! I’m excited to show you the rest of our photos soon. :)

Ruby the Chihuahua Mix in Del Mar, CA (Photos)

Tuesday, April 19th, 2016

I had the pleasure of meeting the most adorable little chihuahua mix in Del Mar recently! Ruby is a happy little dog from Vista, CA that’s always happy to be with her parents, and I met her on the beaches of Del Mar for our photo session!

Ruby is an 11-year-old chihuahua mix, and good luck guessing her other breed(s) – I personally think she’s part coyote, haha! Her soft, fluffy fur seems to overflow from every angle, and I loved seeing all the different positions her big, pointy, expressive ears could take! She loves the beach, although not for the water – this pup is definitely anti-swimming! Her survival instincts took over every time a wave came near, and she’d rush back up the sand to higher ground. That’s only if her mom didn’t scoop her up first, though – Ruby’s mom always kept a watchful eye on Ruby to make sure she was safe! In fact, some of my favorite images from this session are of the two of them, because they have the most amazing connection together. It was beautiful to watch them interact and make sure each other was happy & content. I’m sure that connection has grown even stronger in the last couple of months, since Ruby was unfortunately diagnosed with Addison’s disease, and has been spending more than her fair share of time at the vet. But she’s feeling great these days – her mom is hoping they’ll have several more years together! – and I was glad we were able to get together for this session so I could see Ruby run around the beach with plenty of energy. (Although, truth be told, Ruby’s not terribly big on running or playing fetch or getting much of a workout. She’d much rather meander around the sand, stay close to her parents and keep a much more relaxed pace! She’s at the beach for leisure, not exercise, haha!)

I just love Ruby’s warm coloring against the cool blues of the beach & sky! She’s such a cutie!

Close to her parents = Ruby’s happy place. Always.

She may be 11 years old, but she can still run down the coastline like a puppy – especially if there are treats involved, haha!

Brooke & JB, thank you so much for introducing me to your adorable little girl. I’m looking forward to seeing you all again soon! :)

Dippy, Lulu & Bentley – Rescue Dogs in San Diego, CA

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2015

Well I have to admit, I have a bit of a soft spot for this photo session… because it was my last one of 2015! And what a way to end this incredible year: with three adorable, full-of-personality dogs! This awesome little pack lives with their parents in the Kensington neighborhood of San Diego – just down the street from my studio – and we traveled to three very distinct parts of the city for our photo session! We started in the studio, then headed out to a local park, and then finished up at the beach – but I have to admit, the images from the park are a few of my early favorites as I’ve started to go through all the photos from the day, so their sneak peek is going to be park-exclusive! :)  I’m so excited to introduce you to these wonderful pups – all of whom are rescue dogs in San Diego!

This is Dippy, a serious contender for dog-with-the-cutest-name-ever. She enjoys her frisbee (as you can see), treats, and generally playing hard to get… let me tell you, this dog’s affection is hard-earned! She has the funniest “side-eye” look that she gives most people that try to get her attention (including me, and her mom) as if to say, “what are you doing?” I can’t quite put my finger on it, but Dippy seems to have a very keen understanding of what goes on around her… she’s so aware & in the moment!

Lulu is a cockapoo – and don’t let her adorable little face fool you, she’s a coyote fighter! That’s right! Her mom told me the most incredible story of how she literally fought off a coyote at a dog park one day! As a result of the incident, her neck isn’t in the best shape anymore, but overall she’s a healthy, happy (and surprisingly fierce!) dog! I didn’t see any of her ferocious spirit, but I did get to witness her beautiful zest for life and sheer contentedness when she’s with her family. Plus, she’s so cute! :)

This pointy puppy is Bentley! He’s the youngest one of the bunch, by several years, so he wins the award for Most Energetic Dog of the Day! He was beyond excited to visit the park and especially the beach – and honestly, it’s hard to take a bad photo of his handsome face. What a gorgeous pup… with a silly, ridiculous personality to boot! Bentley basically had me laughing for the entire session… he was always ready to fetch the frisbee one more time!

Okay, I lied. We’re not park-exclusive anymore. Here’s one beach photo of Dippy’s famous side-eye… just because. :)

Rebecca & Holly, thank you for such a fun afternoon! I hope you’re having a great trip, and I’m excited to see you both again soon!

Riley the Border Collie / Husky Mix, in San Diego!

Sunday, October 18th, 2015

Let’s be honest: I work with a lot of beautiful dogs. I get to meet big, handsome, regal dogs, as well as cute little puppies – I suppose I’m spoiled that way! And while I’ve never met a dog that I would consider “ugly”, I’ll admit that some dogs are just a little bit more good-looking than others… and Riley is definitely one of those extra-gorgeous pups!

Riley is a border collie & husky mix, an interesting combination of breeds that came together in a stunning way. His coat is a fascinating mix of black & white, and while the border collie is obvious on his handsome, narrow face, Riley’s fluffy tail is 100% husky! All in all, he’s a beautiful boy, and his parents have gotten so many compliments from strangers that it’s now a regular occurrence for them to hear people say “what a cute dog” anywhere around town! And fittingly, Riley’s personality is just as beautiful: he’s a happy, content pup who absolutely loves to be around his parents. He always wants to be on the move, from one place to another, but he never ends up exploring very far away from his mom & dad. I loved working with him (despite the fact that he totally snubbed my treats!), and the opinionated way in which he told us exactly what he wanted to do kept me laughing for our entire session!

We started our photo session on the white studio backdrop! I love how his features pop out in this setting!

After a while, we switched to the gray backdrop, but Riley soon decided he was ready to head to our next location…

… the park! I love the contrast of his black & white fur against the rich, warm colors of Presidio Park!

And I’ll share another photo with you, just because it made quite a splash on the Facebook page! I posted a quick iPhone photo of the back of my camera, right after our photo session ended, since I knew this would be an epic photo when I took it! Here’s the edited version (where you can actually see Riley’s face, haha!)

Mackenzie & Jonas, thank you for introducing me to your sweet boy! I’m so excited to show you the rest of our photos soon! :)

Sid the French Mastiff / Catahoula Mix Dog, in San Diego!

Saturday, August 8th, 2015

Are you ready to meet one of the most unique-looking dogs to ever grace this blog? It doesn’t get much better than a French Mastiff & Catahoula mix dog, and those two (very different) breeds come together beautifully in Sid, the 9-month-old puppy from San Marcos!

Sid’s mom saw my work hanging in Dogs Abound, the premier boarding/daycare/training facility in San Marcos, and as soon as she described Sid to me I knew I was in for a treat! This handsome boy is still puppy, but he’s already well-trained and eager to please. (Well, when he’s in the mood, at least… he tends to act like a teenager some of the time)! And although we quickly learned that the camera is NOT Sid’s favorite thing, haha, I think this session was a great example of taking our time & working at the dog’s comfort level to create beautiful images, even with a few initial signs of fear/uncertainty. Dogs definitely don’t have to be trained models to have a successful photo session! It just takes a little bit of patience. :)

Here’s the handsome guy, in the studio!

We tried out the dramatic black backdrop, too! Doesn’t he look stunning?

And we finished up in soft sunlight at the park.

Thanks, Christine & Chris, for introducing me to your handsome boy! I’m so excited to show you the rest of our photos soon! :)
