Scooby the Chocolate Labrador

Thursday, December 11th, 2014

Imagine my surprise when my phone rang the other day with a call from central Florida – and it’s a fellow pet photographer on the line! This photo session certainly came about in a unique way, since it happened to be my client’s father arranging it all… but soon enough, I met the star of our session, Scooby. He’s the definition of a chocolate labrador: he has a happy-go-lucky attitude, huge smile, and an insatiable zest for life! He just wants everyone to be his friend and the beach is his favorite place on earth. But I was sad to hear the recent news that a cancerous tumor had developed on his shoulder, and it was growing fast… so although Scooby’s grandpa (the fellow pet photographer I mentioned) would be in California for Christmas in a couple of weeks, they simply weren’t sure that Scooby would be here to see him by then. So that’s where I came in, and honestly, I couldn’t have been more honored to photograph Scooby & his mom.

We visited one of Scooby’s favorite beaches, Fiesta Island, and had a wonderful time playing in the sand & surf together. Scooby’s mom hadn’t taken him to the beach in a while, so he was definitely saving up his energy for our photo session – and I have a feeling he was pretty sore the next day, haha! He romped around like a puppy… and it was a beautiful thing to see.

He’s a lab – so of course he loves being in the water!

We let Scooby run around off-leash for the entire session, since he always came back to his mom’s side, time after time.

I know Scooby’s mom is excited to see this image… what a beautiful relationship they have.

Jenn, thank you for an absolutely wonderful photo session to finish my 2014 calendar! I’ve been thinking about you & Scooby recently… I hope he’s still feeling good, and I’m excited to see you again soon!

Beach Photos with Sammy the Black Lab

Friday, August 29th, 2014

I was privileged to spend an evening with Sammy, a handsome black labrador, for beach photos recently! We met at Tourmaline Beach, where the surfers were everywhere – and the sunset was absolutely perfect! I couldn’t have asked for a better night for a photo session, and I absolutely loved spending it with a woman & dog that share such a close relationship. Sammy & Janet truly mean the world to each other; you can see it in the way the interact and even in the way they look at each other. To me, witnessing their relationship is absolutely beautiful… I was downright honored to be there to document it.

Sammy, despite the fact that he’s slowed down a bit in the last year or so, had a spectacular time at the beach! He ran around, splashed in the surf, and protected us from all the other dogs walking around (haha). He’s a fun-loving, classic labrador – one of my favorite breeds – so of course I let him play around as much as he wanted.

Here’s Sammy! Isn’t that a handsome face?

I’m going to break one of my own rules, and post a couple of “people” photos here in a sneak peek… I can’t help it; I just love the energy between these two!

And this… how could I not share this?

Janet, I had a wonderful time with you & Sammy – and I’ll be in touch very soon! I can’t wait to show you the rest of our photos. :)

Super-Fun Pet Photography Session with Roxy & Madison!

Thursday, June 12th, 2014

I can’t begin to tell you what a FUN pet photography session I had with sisters Roxy & Madison! Roxy is an 11-year-old labrador who takes it slow these days, and Madison is a 2-year-old Cavachon (that’s a Cavalier King Charles spaniel & Bichon Frise mix) that has all the energy in the world! So in fact, it was a bit of a challenge for me behind the lens, balancing & bringing out the best in these two very different personalities. I learned that Roxy, uncharacteristic to her labrador breeding, doesn’t like the water – but then again, she likes snuggling on the couch and eating anything at all, which are very labrador-esque qualities! Madison is a little fireball whose favorite treat is bits of cheese; she was a joy to photograph because she was up for anything (as long as cheese was involved) and always had a smile on her face! I absolutely love these dogs… they’re both happy girls who are absolutely devoted to their parents – who, by the way, own the very best doggie daycare & boarding center in all of El Cajon! It was a privilege to work with the fabulous people behind Camp Bow Wow, and we’re in the midst of putting together a few special offers for each of our clientele… stay tuned for more info on those specials, here and on my Facebook page and their page too.

This is Roxy! (And her mom!)

And here’s Madison! This is exactly how she always runs, haha!

Is Madison in training to be a circus performer? Nah, just showing off for treats. :)

Connie & Mark, thank you for a ridiculously fun pet photography session! Your dogs crack me up. Can’t wait to see you both again soon!

Dog Photography: Old Labradors & Young Beagles

Monday, April 8th, 2013

I am so pleased to introduce you to this fun pack of dogs! Comprised of two old labradors and young beagles, I knew it would be a fun session because I enjoy being with these two breeds so much. So I was greeted at their front door by Bailey the beagle’s bark – no, actually, it’s not really a bark. It’s more of a screeching scream that may have once started or ended with a “woof”! Haha! It’s definitely a one-of-a-kind sound, and – I’ll be honest – I jumped a little bit! But Bailey was all talk; turns out he’s a total sweetheart, and so are all his siblings. He and Daisy (both beagles) are 2-3 years old, and both labradors (Rusty and Zoe) are in the 13-14-year-old range. This means that the labs pull rank when they want to, but the beagles can run circles around them – and during our session, they did!

This is Rusty on the left; he bears a few signs of aging but he’s a happy old sweetheart, mostly content to slowly trundle around the backyard. Bailey’s here on the right.

Daisy is the other beagle of the family, and she was nice enough to put on her eyeliner for our session. On the right is Zoe, who was only happiest when she was as close as possible to her mom. Look at those happy floppy ears, and sweet eyes!

FAVORITE MOMENT: Up until the end of our session, Rusty was a slow-going wanderer. He wasn’t too keen on listening to commands; just did whatever he wanted, which mostly consisted of watching everyone else run around while tottering around the yard/beach. He got a bit excited for treats, but at that age, it’s a bit difficult to define “excitement”; he pretty much just perked up his ears and followed the treat with his eyes until you eventually gave it to him. Then he’d munch on it and go back to trundling around aimlessly. That’s fine; it’s what he wanted to do. So with almost three hours of this behavior, I kind of figured that that was simply his personality and we wouldn’t get any real “action” out of old Rusty. But we finally let the dogs get in the water at the beach at the very end of our session; they had been good and we knew they’d love getting in. SUDDENLY: Rusty sprang to life! He was jumping, running, flailing around! (Sorry Rus, but you were flailing.) He was a puppy in an old dog’s body! It was incredible! He was FULL of life and joy! And while I’m sure he was sore the next day from his spurt of energy, it was a magical moment. I was so thrilled I was there – both to help create it, and to capture it.

Rusty, Zoe, Bailey, & Daisy: thank you for a wonderfully fun afternoon. I absolutely can’t wait to see you & your mom again soon!

Daisy the Super-Athletic, Pool-Jumping, Ball-Obsessed Lab Mix

Wednesday, November 7th, 2012

You want to talk about FUN sessions? I spent over 30 minutes just watching (& shooting) as Daisy the lab mix jumped into her backyard pool over and over and over again… what a blast!! Maybe I’m the only person who gets excited about this kind of a session, but it hearkens back to my sports photography past, and I had a ball (pun intended)!

Daisy Mae is a ridiculously athletic labrador/beagle mix, with maybe some pit bull in her as well. Whatever breeds make up Daisy, they all must have some sort of championship bloodlines, because this girl can MOVE! We absolutely couldn’t tire her out by the pool, and when we went inside it was pretty clear she just wanted to go out again and swim some more! I hope you enjoy this Sneak Peek – and remember to watch the Facebook page for more photos of this ball-obsessed girl! :)

Last but not least… I just love this photo! We were playing with her ball in the side yard, and at one point my life practically flashed before my eyes when Daisy came up to give me her ball. Is this image technically perfect? No. Is it in focus in all the right places? Nope! But Daisy loves nothing more than playing with her ball, and that look in her eyes when she drops it at your feet is so adorable – and I think there’s a lot of unbridled joy in this image.

Steve & Jill, have fun on your cruise! And rest assured: I’ll have a LOT of photos for you to see once you’re back in town!
