Lucca the Very Big Dog Canadian Warmblood Horse

Thursday, October 21st, 2021

I was so thrilled when Lucca’s mom reached out to me, as she’s a past client going back all the way to 2015! (You can go back and see the blog posts where I have photographed her pets over the years: including Buster, Fae, Leyland, and Nyx, then Nyx, Fae, and Quinzel, and most recently Fae, Nyx, Quinzel, and Slade.) We have fun every time we get together, so I knew this time around it wouldn’t be any different! Except maybe there is one tiny difference… Lucca is a horse! He recently joined the family and I was honored that his mom asked me to photograph him. As much as I am an expert at dogs, horses are an entirely differently animal. *pun intended* :) Photographing them is a completely different skillset that I’ve been working on, because while dogs will always be my true love, I genuinely adore working with horses. Capturing them in all of their glory involves a different pace, style, equipment… all kinds of changes to my normal routine! Plus, one look at this beautiful boy and you’ll see why I was thrilled to be asked to create some gorgeous portraits with these two.

One of the activities Lucca and his mom Patrisha enjoy doing together is competing in local and regional competitions. Patrisha said that she has a lot of fun with it, and (perhaps more importantly) so does he! They do well together too; at one point we actually got to pose them next to their trophy that they had recently won! How cool is that?!

We had a great photo session in the nearby property where Lucca normally trains and boards. It was wonderful to see their bond; there has to be a huge amount of trust and a strong relationship between a person and a horse, so it was great to see the two of them interact. I’ve only seen Patrisha with her dogs, so to see her with her horse was simply wonderful. Not to mention, horses can be more challenging to work with since they can be especially fearful, impatient, or just don’t want to do what you’re asking them to do for portraits. That was NOT the case with Lucca: he was incredibly patient and willing to do anything we asked. I was very impressed with his demeanor! For this particular photo session we did a lot of posed and stationary portraits – so hopefully we can let him loose at full speed at some point in the future, since I’d love to capture that too! Regardless, I loved the slower pace of our photo session and it seemed to fit Lucca’s chill vibe perfectly.

This is Lucca. How long did it take you to fall in love with that face?! 2 seconds? Yep, me too.

I don’t normally include people in my blog posts… but this time I can’t help it! My favorite photos of Lucca all have Patrisha in them too! These two are gorgeous together!

Okay, one more of just Lucca… even though I personally think his best portraits are with him & his favorite person.

Thank you Patrisha, for trusting me to photograph the largest companion in your life! I can’t wait to show you the rest of Lucca’s portraits very soon!

Dakota, Firefly & Bella Rose! (Horse Photography in Rancho Santa Fe)

Thursday, June 29th, 2017

Oh my goodness – I am SO excited to share this sneak peek with you!! I don’t get to photograph horses every day, so this session was an absolute treat for me – and hopefully the photos are a nice treat for you, too!

Dakota and Firely are incredibly gorgeous horses – my eyes basically popped out of my head when I met them the other day after Gemma’s photo session (she’s their feline sister!). So I recently headed back to give them my full attention, and we had a spectacular time together! The boys are both slightly jumpy, so we kept the pace nice & easy, and I did my best to get their attention in a way that was interesting but not scary – and those of you who’ve heard the funny noises I make to get a pet’s attention know exactly what I’m talking about! But their handlers were a huge help, so with a bit of teamwork I think we were able to create some gorgeous images.

Not to be overlooked (literally or figuratively), Bella Rose the miniature horse joined us as well! She kept us laughing the whole time with her adorable antics, since she’s got enough attitude for a full-size horse, that’s for sure!

This is Dakota – I can’t get enough of his warm brown fur against the rich green grass. LOVE him.

This is Firefly! I adore his unique patches and so-dark-it’s-almost-black fur. He’s a big fan of carrots.

Of course, this is Bella Rose! She was looking fresh for her portraits – that mane has volume, haha!

We have several images of the horses together, but most of them are going to require a significant amount of retouching… so for now, I’ll just share this peaceful moment of the horses enjoying their chance to munch on the soft grass.

Tanya, I’m so excited to get together with you soon!! Emily and Sue, these photos certainly wouldn’t have come together without you – so thank you for being willing to work with me! :)

Del Mar Horse Photography Session, with Bronte

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2015

It’s not too often that I get to do a Del Mar horse photography session – but I absolutely love it when the opportunity arises! There’s just something about photographing these beautiful & powerful creatures in a location that’s recognized all over the world for equestrian competition… I don’t what it is, but the history & tradition of Del Mar just get to me. So that’s why I was simply bursting with excitement to meet Bronte the horse!

As it turns out, Bronte’s owners won a gift certificate at a recent event, and in our first phone call, Donna explained that they have two vizslas & two wire-haired pointing griffons – wow! All gorgeous dogs, and I expected to learn all about them & start planning for a photo session with 16 legs, haha – until Donna mentioned that they also have a horse! So the conversation quickly switched to Bronte, and Taylor (Donna’s daughter) who handles & rides Bronte just about every day. We decided that with Taylor’s upcoming senior year in high school, documenting her relationship with Bronte was our top priority – and the dogs’ photo session could wait until later on! :)

So that’s how I got to meet the gorgeous, opinionated, mind-of-her-own Bronte! She was actually a great subject to work with, because at the beginning of our session she held still, posed nicely and was happy to point her ears my way… and by the end of our session, her personality really came out and we have a few “bloopers” to show for it, haha! She’s so well-loved, and her connection with Taylor is evident – so I adored the opportunity to photograph two beautiful subjects that day. :)

I’m so glad Bronte’s stables are in such a pretty setting! You really can’t go wrong in Del Mar…

Outfit change? Love it!

Okay I’m sorry but I CAN’T get over how gorgeous these two are.

Taylor & Donna, thank you so much for a wonderful afternoon! I can’t wait to show you the rest of our photos very soon! :)

Rancho Santa Fe Horse Photography, with Trea!

Wednesday, August 5th, 2015

Oh my goodness – I cannot POSSIBLY tell you how excited I’ve been for this photo session, and how long we’ve waited for it to happen! Jen (Trea & Bailey’s mom) is a friend of Tate & Skyler‘s mom, and she booked her session immediately after seeing their photos – so you’d think it wouldn’t have taken more than two months to finally get together! But the severity of May Gray & June Gloom interfered, and we were left waiting for a sunny (or at least not a rainy!) day. And finally, the morning we met up at Trea’s stable in Rancho Santa Fe, the weather was near-perfect: a bright sun coming through a thin layer of overcast clouds. I love that kind of weather; it’s enough light to capture high-speed action photos, while not creating any harsh shadows. Simply wonderful! :)

This is Trea (short for Mr. Bailey’s Treasure), a downright gorgeous American quarter horse. We took him on a walk through the neighborhood, stopping at the bougainvillea bushes along the way.

I don’t get the chance to work with horses too often, but gosh I love having the opportunity! He is so regal! This Rancho Santa Fe horse photography session was definitely one for the books.

Jen, I hope you don’t mind me including a photo of you in this sneak peek… I just love this moment with you two! :)

And after our fun with Trea, we came back to Jen’s house for the second half of our session – photos with Bailey the German shepherd! Now you KNOW I love dogs named Bailey – since that’s my dog’s name too – and this happy, loving boy was a delight to work with!

We also visited Encinitas Community Park, where we ran around the grass and barked at a few other dogs. What a sweet boy Bailey is… how could you ever say no to that face?! (But who knows… maybe he’s just happy remembering that box of a dozen donuts that he ate all by himself recently! Haha!)

Jen, I can’t thank you enough for your patience with my weather pickiness… the good news is that I know for a fact our waiting paid off! I’m so excited to see you (and the whole gang) again soon! :)

Thwarted by the Rain: Bubba the Border Collie

Monday, July 23rd, 2012

You might remember Bubba the old border collie from his earlier post – and I have good news to report! He’s doing a bit better, and we got to schedule another session with him! So we had grand plans to visit a fantastically beautiful horse farm in Pace, and I was so excited to get together with the old guy and his mom Kim again. But sometimes the weather just doesn’t cooperate – and this was one of those times. Despite prayers and an anti-rain dance, the clouds opened up (literally as SOON as we were ready to start shooting!) and unfortunately stopped us from getting the most out of this gorgeous setting. Hopefully we can return to try again soon!
