In-Home and Balboa Park Photo Session with Ben & Ranger

Friday, July 6th, 2018

When I first met these dogs, they were their parents’ only children… okay, besides their feline sister Dottie. But by the time our session rolled around, they had adapted quickly to their new role as big brothers – to their new human siblings, baby boys! And since I got to meet the adorable little twins during our photo session, which took place at their home and Balboa Park, I’ve been thinking about all the ways Ben & Ranger are similar as brothers… but also incredibly different!

This is Ranger, a lab mix with one of the most joyful, irresistible smiles I’ve ever seen! His ears seem to prop themselves up on stilts whenever he’s paying attention to you, and he’s a playful, curious boy. Not to mention I adored photographing him – he’s so much fun to work with!

And this handsome, pensive face belongs to Ben (short for “Big Ben”), a retired racing greyhound from Mexico. He’s a gorgeous, lithe, graceful dog – but all that went out the window about 2 minutes into our session, when he skittered around on the hardwood floor at home in feverish excitement to jump up on the couch and pose for a few treats! Haha! If Ranger didn’t already have me laughing, Ben made sure to fill in the gaps, so there wasn’t a dull moment during our session. (Plus, I loved the challenge of making weird-enough sounds to ensure those greyhound ears are on full display!)

Like I mentioned, we split our photo session between the dogs’ home and Balboa Park, so before long we were off to the visit the flowers, architecture and splendor of San Diego’s most famous park. Both dogs did surprisingly well amongst the crowds, and of course we took time to stop and smell the flowers. :)

“Ranger” and “thoughtful” are two words that don’t usually go together, haha… but doesn’t he look like he’s pondering the mysteries of the universe? (Or maybe just how he’ll get his next treat?) Despite the soft, peaceful feel of this photo, knowing Ranger’s personality, it makes me smile. :)

Jeff & Meaghan, you two are total champions for joining me on a photo session with two dogs and two new babies! But no one could have handled it better, and I’m absolutely honored to know your beautiful family. Looking forward to seeing you both again soon! :)

Dog Photography in Germany!

Sunday, May 12th, 2013

Oh yes, that’s right… in case you didn’t hear the news on the Facebook page, I spent the last two and a half weeks in Europe! Mostly in Germany, but my husband & I travelled all over: Cologne, Paris, Lake Como, Munich, Hallstatt (Austria) & Prague! It was an INCREDIBLE trip, and you can definitely expect a blog post soon with a bit of travel photography!

For now, though, you’ll have to be content with photos of the tiny town of Kummersbruck, Germany… and the dogs I met there!! :) Sergei, Brenna & Cher are rescued Irish greyhounds, and they live with their parents in a cute (but seriously tiny) village. They often take their evening walk with three local German kids, too! Everyone came out for our session and we wandered around the countryside and their usual walking route. Both my husband Ken & I had an absolutely fabulous time meeting and spending time with all of them! There’s so much I could tell you… but I know you want to see the photos! :)

First, let me introduce you to Brenna. She’s happy to be a lazy greyhound most of the time, but she saved a great little spurt of energy for our session!

And this is Cher, a blue greyhound. She loved being out in the open! Isn’t she pretty?

What gorgeous girls.

This big man is Sergei. His parents joke that he’s a mixed breed: part cow! He has SO much personality!

Here are all three dogs with their German “siblings”, Constanze, Friederike & Lenni. It was right about this time that Constanze noticed a HUGE rain cloud coming our way… so we hustled back home & out of the storm!

Words like “fun” and “enjoyable” don’t even BEGIN to describe what an absolute ball we had with our new friends in the little town of Kummersbruck… thank you all, for an unforgettable experience. I’ll talk to you soon, I hope!

Beach Session: Mercedes the Rhodesian Ridgeback and Jaguar the Greyhound

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

Sometimes I come across a spectacularly well-named dog, and I just love it when the name I keep calling during their session (usually with little effect, haha) is funny or has a great meaning behind it. This session may have been my all-time favorite: I had the privilege of photographing Mercedes and Jaguar! Both dogs are six years old: Jaguar is a retired greyhound and Mercedes is a Rhodesian ridgeback.

I was extra-excited for this session for another reason: my dog Bailey is part Rhodesian ridgeback (we think!). So it was fascinating to see the purebred version of my mutt, and honestly, I think they have a lot in common personality-wise! They’re both a bit stubborn and don’t have that eager-to-please attitude of, say, a golden retriever. But my gosh, when they run around free of a leash, I’ve hardly seen a dog smile bigger. Mercedes had a huge grin on her face! For now, enjoy these pictures while I keep working on the rest…

Thanks for a great afternoon at the beach, Cheryl!

Christmas Pet Portraits! ~ {Pensacola and Ft. Walton Beach Pet Photography by Allison Shamrell}

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

With Christmas coming up so soon, I thought you might like to see the results of the Christmas Sessions from earlier this month! I set up my studio in The Spotted Dog and 3 Dogs & A Chick, and a bunch of families came in to have their Christmas portraits taken. It was a lot of fun, and a bit chaotic – let’s just say I’m glad I splurged on the “shatter-resistant” ornaments!

Here’s a fun video I put together featuring many of the attendees we had – and I kept it to just photos of the dogs, even though we had plenty more portraits of everyone’s whole family! Enjoy!
