A Bittersweet Photo Session with Huxley and Gibson

Wednesday, November 6th, 2019

Are you ready? A dose of beautiful & bittersweet is coming your way. You see, Huxley the Great Dane was recently diagnosed with cancer, and he doesn’t have much time left with his parents and little brother. Luckily, I was able to carve out some time in my schedule to meet with them soon after talking with his mom for the first time about a month ago. It’s not easy to squeeze in last-minute sessions this time of year, since it’s my busy season, but I always leave holes in my shooting calendar just for emergencies like this. I’m sad that I met this fun family under these heartbreaking circumstances, but at least (miraculously) the weather was absolutely perfect, almost as if the weather gods knew that we might not have time to reschedule.

We started out at Presidio Park in San Diego. Although the natural incline of the park proved to be a little tough on Huxley’s back legs, he handled it like a champ! He was having a good time and only wanted to hang out with his brother, Gibson, and of course his parents. We found a nice, relatively flat spot in the park under the shade of a huge tree that was perfect for portraits. After some time there, we headed over to Fiesta Island. Huxley LOVES Fiesta and so does Gibson! Right after getting out of the car, you could immediately tell there was a difference with Huxley as he was more comfortable and walking easier & faster. It was familiar territory which made him happy and in return made all of us happy. It was great that we were able to be flexible and arrive there earlier than we were originally planning, rather than pushing him too hard to stay at the park longer than he wanted to. It’s SO important that pets feel as comfortable as possible during their session. As a result everyone has a better time!

Gibson on the other hand? You can’t push him too hard, haha! He’s a total puppy compared to his older brother! He’s a rescued Tijuana street dog, a doberman/labrador mix and a ball of energy! He just wanted to run around, chase his ball, have a blast, and play with tug-of-war with his brother on the beach. It was so funny to watch him scramble around and jump and hustle to play tug with a new toy with Huxley, the Great Dane, who just… stands there. Almost motionless. Haha! Sorry Gibson, but it’s hilarious to watch. Their parents let me know that they usually bring their favorite “stick log” that they found one day at Fiesta Island and bring back to let the boys play with it there. But even though they didn’t get to play with their stick log, they had a blast with the ball! This truly is their happy place and you could tell that Huxley was in his element. The dogs usually swim with their lifejackets, and although we didn’t let Huxley fully go swimming this time we were able to capture some really playful portraits!

This was just a beautiful afternoon for Huxley and his family. I know they have hard times coming up, and Gibson is really going to miss his big brother. We ended up with some amazing portraits to remember him by. I feel so honored to have been a part of this photo session, and I know his parents will cherish these moments for a very long time.

This is Huxley. Isn’t he handsome?!

I don’t think Gibson has an “off” button. He just goes!

It’s your world, Hux. We just live in it.

Pink, Achilles & Calvin – Pets from La Jolla

Friday, November 10th, 2017

Some pets are lucky enough to hit the jackpot in life: they’re adopted by a loving family, have siblings to play with, and have a great place to call home. What more could a dog or cat want, right? I’m happy to report that Pink, Achilles & Calvin have all “won the lottery”, and I’m thrilled to introduce you to them!

These pets all live in beautiful La Jolla with their parents – who are expecting a 2-legged child early next year! So we spent a nice afternoon together in their backyard, and I had a great time getting to know each of the pets’ distinctive personalities.

Calvin is thoroughly his dad’s cat. He’s about 7 years old and yes, his green eyes are that stunning in real life, too.

This is Pink! This sweet girl has spent her whole life with her mom, and they’re incredibly closely-bonded. She loves to relax in the grass and sniff around – and she goes absolutely bonkers when you bring out the treats! Her favorite snack is apples… because she’s healthy like that.

And this gorgeous hunk is Achilles, the goofball of the family. Even after 2 long walks earlier that day, he still had plenty of energy for our session – and we put it all to good use! He’s a sweet boy who came from a not-so-sweet background, so I was especially glad to see that he lucked out and found such a loving family. (Plus, he fits so well into the grey theme that Calvin & Pink started, haha!!)

Ashley & Max, thank you so much for introducing me to your family! I’m looking forward to seeing you both again soon! :)

The Biggest & Smallest Dogs: Honey & Capone

Wednesday, May 15th, 2013

I’m pretty sure these dogs are, respectively, the biggest & smallest pups that I’ve ever worked with: Capone tips the scales at 140 lbs and Honey weighs in at a mere 6! So, naturally, they’re brother & sister! :)

Capone is the big guy, just two years old but definitely beyond the norm in size. Sometimes I think his limbs are so long, he doesn’t have complete control of them – this guy is a goofball! He really kept us laughing with hilarious looks on his face and clumsy antics. I’m sure his parents get a heck of a show at home all the time!

Honey is a 7-year-old poodle/shih tzu mix. (The photo I posted to the Facebook page also evidences her third breed.) While her parents kept trying to tell me that she a can be a total handful, and that she’s lost her welcome to friends’ houses, and how she rarely (if ever) behaves how they want, and that she has NO obedience… I couldn’t help it. I fell in LOVE! Would you just LOOK at that cute face!!

I may steal her during our Ordering Session. No promises.

Here’s the big man – Capone!

One more of Capone, just because I love his ears in this photo. They’re like tents!

Kayla & Jason (& Lori), thank you so much for a great session! I had a great time with you all, and I can’t wait to show you the photos! :)

Dog Days of Summer 2012 – the First Annual Event!

Thursday, August 30th, 2012

When I was first asked to be on the planning committee for Dog Days of Summer, I had NO IDEA what a huge event and ridiculous amount of fun it would turn out to be! (Plus, all the planning meetings at La Hacienda Mexican restaurant were pretty delicious/wonderful too.) We designed the day to be similar to the Gulf Breeze Pet Fest or Pensacola’s huge Barktoberfest, but with one big difference: all proceeds would benefit the American Cancer Society. Human & canine cancer is so prevalent and any donation we could make would be worth the effort – so after several months of planning, August 18 was the big day! And guess what: the results are in, and we raised over $1000 for the American Cancer Society! YAY!

This post is full of just a few dogs from that day who stopped by to say hello! These photos will also be used to make a 2013 calendar, the proceeds from which will also benefit the American Cancer Society. (If you keep scrolling down, you’ll see some of the funny themes and props we put together for each month!) Stay tuned to the blog and the Facebook page for more info on how to get your copy!

Let’s start with a photo of the head organizer’s dog! This is Rusty, Becky’s boy, and he’s only about a year old – but I photographed him when he was a tiny puppy! It was so much fun to see him “all grown up” and much bigger than I remember!

Serious contender for cutest puppy at the event: Fiona the shepherd mix. I think she looks a bit like my Bailey! And WHAT a smile!

Rocky is another one of the organizer’s dogs – you really should check out Premier Pet Grooming if you’re in Milton!

Conway is a chug (chihuahua/pug mix), don’t you love that underbite? And Sonny the lab mix will help us introduce the many props and costumes for each month…

Whew, there are a TON of photos in this post! But if you can’t get enough, check out the full day’s gallery here: http://proofs.allisonshamrell.com. More importantly, a HUGE thank-you goes out to everyone that came on the 18th, whether it was for several hours or just a short time!
