Loews Surf Dog Competition 2013 – Imperial Beach, San Diego, CA

Monday, June 24th, 2013

What an incredible day at the beach! Sun, sand, and surfing dogs – add in a few doggles and you can’t beat that combination! Saturday was the 8th Annual Loews Surf Dog Competition, and let me tell you, if you weren’t there, you missed out! The streets of Imperial Beach were jam-packed with cars for miles in every direction; I was shocked at how many people & dogs were there. Then again, this was my first-ever dog surfing competition, so I didn’t know what I was getting myself into… still, I think anyone would have said “wow” upon seeing thousands of human & canine spectators in one place! It was awesome to see everyone supporting the dogs out there in the water; there were huge rounds of applause and cheers for any dog that successfully rode in to shore! And of course plenty of “oooh”s and laughs at the wipeouts! Check out a few of my favorite photos from the event!

This is Abbie Girl, an Australian kelpie & the champion of the small dog category! She was a total pro.

Sometimes I found the people’s faces just as amusing as the dogs’! Heehee!

And let’s give a little credit to the people out there! I think the dogs may have actually had a pretty easy time, just standing on those boards… their human helpers were always in prime position to get smacked by the waves!

This guy was such a goofball – and a great surfer, too!

These dogs are smart, they know when to jump off & save themselves! Haha! There were lots of funny wipeouts!

I was SO impressed by the dogs that actually shared surfboards!! These two worked the board like it was nothing.

Uhhh… bird costumes?? What? Haha, these three definitely had an extra challenge out there.

Here’s another reason the event was so exciting: we were in the presence of celebrities!  This is Ricochet, a service dog that surfs with people with disabilities! She’s an incredible surfer and a beautiful spirit. Check out her website here, and if the videos there don’t make you cry or at least tear up, well, you’re stronger than me. She also has a super-active Facebook page!

And here’s the one-and-only Tillman! He’s mostly famous for skateboarding (check out the video that made him famous; it has 20 million hits, no big deal) but he was out there on a surfboard on Saturday! He won the large dog competition!

The day was gorgeous, of course – it’s San Diego! (gorgeous enough to give me a bit of a sunburn, unfortunately. haha oh well.)

I found it fascinating that there were photographers out there, in the waves, with waterproof casings for their cameras! That is DEFINITELY where I want to be next year!!

This photo sums up the spirit of the day, I think – goooo surf dogs! The cheers were so loud! :)

Whew, that was a lot of photos! And believe it or not, these were just my favorite images from the whole event! If you’d like to see more, or if your dog surfed and you’d like to purchase a print or digital image, visit the event gallery here: http://proofs.allisonshamrell.com.

Oh, and here’s something fun: my photos from the competition were internationally published! Here’s the story from the UK Daily Mail, which asked for my photos to include in their article! I thought I’d left the world of journalism photography behind a few years ago… apparently not! :)

I hope you enjoyed seeing all the photos of these talented dogs! If you’ve never been here before, welcome! You’re visitng my blog, which is where I post about recent events (like this one) and sessions. My website is different; it’s where you can check out my whole portfolio and find info about a session with your dogs! Last but not least, my Facebook page is a pretty fun place too! :) Take a look, click “like”, and you’ll get to see more fun photos like these in your newsfeed!

Thanks for visiting!  :)

A Few Overdue Photos

Friday, June 7th, 2013

In all the craziness last month of learning that my family would be moving to San Diego – and then making the move incredibly quickly after that – I had to do a few things differently than normal. Part of that included staying up WAY late to finish edits & submitting client orders, and another part was packing up our house for the movers to come. (moving a house = not easy; moving a house + business = akfhjdsamvfdknsd!!!) I even photographed sessions mere DAYS before literally driving away from our house for the last time… so, needless to say, all the meticulous editing I do for every client would simply have to wait until I could breathe again!

Now that I’m finally here & beginning to settle in San Diego, I have time (and not at 3 am!) to give these clients’ photos the attention they deserve. So this blog post is kind of like a second sneak peek for each of these families; they’ve been incredibly patient with me at this crazy time in my life, and I can’t wait to show them their entire galleries! They’ll be done very soon, but in the meantime, I thought another couple of photos would be fun to share!

Here’s Areli, striking a pose on the beach – just minutes after his parents got engaged!

… eventually we let him take a breather on the dock. He earned it!

Like I said, I can’t wait to release your galleries – very soon! Thanks again for your patience – I think the photos will be worth the wait! :)

My Last Session in Florida: Monty the Gorgeous Golden Retriever

Saturday, May 25th, 2013

I suppose it’s pretty fitting that my very-last session in the Pensacola area was with a golden retriever. After all, they’re the breed I’ve photographed most in my career! And Monty (short for “Montana”) is definitely one of the most gorgeous goldens I’ve ever met; he is ridiculously handsome! He’s a “golden” golden retriever, not a red, but I just couldn’t get enough of that rich-colored, super-fluffy coat. And Monty’s a snuggler, so his soft fur was never far from me or his parents! Monty also has incredible obedience skills; he and his dad have worked hard on various commands and recall, and I think it really paid off in our session – he was willing to do just about anything we asked! Which made my job even more easy and fun than usual! :)

Here’s Mr. Handsome. Look at that FACE.

We played fetch for a while, and his parents forgot to tell me about his built-in rocket boosters. Seriously; Monty’s dad was in aviation maintenance at Eglin and I think he may have brought a few toys home from work and strapped them to his boy’s legs. This dog is FAST! Here are just a couple of action photos; there are many more! I think their final gallery may be half action, haha!

Monty, just stop it. You’re too gorgeous.

I wish I could see Monty & his parents again, but San Diego is calling… still, I can’t wait to release his gallery! Thanks for being such a wonderful last Florida session, Monty! You’ll always have a special place in my heart. :)

A Golden Retriever with his Family: Bachi

Monday, May 20th, 2013

Even though I’m leaving town incredibly soon, I’m still meeting local dogs! Yes, I should probably be packing and beginning to look for a new house in San Diego… but here I am with a camera on my neck! And I am so glad – otherwise I wouldn’t have met Bachi! He’s Beckham‘s friend from Niceville, and for our session we visited a gorgeous dock on the water and Bachi’s favorite neighborhood park. His human siblings were willing to jump in a bunch of the photos, too, which I love – check it out!

We couldn’t have had a more beautiful day! Thanks for cooperating with my tight schedule, weather gods!

Bachi & his sister Gina are especially close; I love so many of the photos of them together!

Bachi, I know I tuckered you out during our session… I promise I won’t make you “work” so hard when I come over again this week! :)

Thanks Rosie, Gina & Scott, for an absolutely delightful time! Can’t wait to see you all again soon!

Two Beautiful Golden Retrievers in Downtown Pensacola

Monday, November 19th, 2012

While I was selecting images for this Sneak Peek, my usual decisiveness went out the window! I typically don’t have a problem finding a few stand-out photos that I want to feature, but going through my photos from Tessa & Abbey’s session, I’m overwhelmed! So this blog post contains a few photos that I picked truly at random; I’m so excited to start going through the rest of our images!

A bit of back-story: Tessa (the slightly darker-colored girl) is a rescue from a truly horrible situation. She was tied and left outside someone’s house for – who knows? – possibly 2-3 years. When her parents adopted her, she didn’t know what treats or toys were. She’s only recently begun to play with her sister, Abbey (the light-colored girl). Abbey comes from a reputable breeder and hasn’t had any of the medical issues that poor Tessa was plagued by – in fact, she’s practically teaching Tessa how to be a dog! These sisters are an adorable pair and I had SO much fun with them and their parents during our session. But that’s enough words for now – let’s get to the photos!

Two photos showing golden retrievers looking out the window and with their mom.

Abbey & Tessa get to live within easy walking distance of this beautiful sea wall – and that’s the new Pensacola Maritime Park in the background!

They are such happy dogs!

Abbey & Tessa, you were a joy to work with. Thanks for delaying your dinner (gasp, it was horrible) so we could get some great photos!
