Missy the French Bulldog Puppy

Wednesday, February 6th, 2019

I know what you’re thinking: “A French bulldog puppy? Isn’t that one of the cutest little breeds ever?” I totally agree – and I know Missy’s mom does too! Meet Missy, the most adorable four-month-old Frenchie. With her unique coloring and confident personality, she was an absolute joy to photograph!

We created these images at Presidio Park, where Missy happily got to run around, chew on sticks, smell all the smells and hang out in the flowers. She was so agreeable and was happy to pose just about anywhere or anyhow for me – in exchange for a treat, of course! And given her young age, I have to admit that I was incredibly impressed by her mom Robin and her training skills. At just a few months old, Missy has already come so far. She already knows commands like sit, come, and we even trusted her for a brief period to be off leash. She always came running right back to either one of us when we called! It was amazing, and just goes to show the strong bond that Missy and her mom are forming as she grows.

I think Missy’s favorite part of the session may have been the very end when she barked her sassy bark and got to use my finger as a chew toy. But I didn’t mind – I would never be able to say “no” to that face! (She must have been full of treats at that point, haha!) But the whole session was fabulous, since Missy was completely happy just being able to explore – never too far from her mom, of course. We had a blast that afternoon!

This is Missy. Yes, she really is that cute in real life.

An Update for Cosmo Kramer & Simone, the Frenchies!

Thursday, May 17th, 2018

So every once in a while, the schedule gods decide NOT to be on my side. (Or maybe I anger them somehow? Who knows!) When that happens, it usually ends up delaying appointments that I’m looking forward to… and this time it meant that Cosmo Kramer & Simone’s family has had to wait far too long (in my opinion) to see their images! But the good news is that they’re finally coming in to the studio in just a few days, and then they’ll get to see all of our adorable portraits – yay! But until then, I decided that their saint-like patience should be rewarded with a second sneak peek! (Did you see their first sneak peek?) Because these Frenchies are way too cute to keep to myself. :)

So without further ado… here’s a fresh look at these Frenchies from San Diego!

French Bulldogs Cosmo Kramer & Simone

Wednesday, April 18th, 2018

I think it can be easy to assign stereotypes to dog breeds sometimes. Not in a bad way – but you might assume certain things about the personality of a dog, just because of its breed. For example, you might think that golden retrievers are always happy. Or that miniature poodles enjoy being carried around town. Or that dobermans make great guard dogs… or that cattle dogs are happiest when they have something to herd.

Part of this is totally logical – these assumptions are (more or less) what those breeds were literally bred for! So you’d be right, most of the time.

But when I ask you for a stereotype about French bulldogs… what comes to mind? For me, that’s a little trickier. If I really think about it, over my career, every French bulldog I’ve ever met has a strong personality and isn’t afraid to ask for what they want. And they’re goofballs!

So when Cosmo Kramer & Simone’s mom got in touch with me, I assumed I’d be in for an entertaining session, to say the least… two French bulldogs?? That could only mean twice the attitude and twice the goofiness – and therefore, a rollicking good time. And guess what: my stereotype was right!!! We had a BLAST during our photo session, and both dogs were just as assertive and confident as I expected (and hoped) they would be.

But there was one thing I didn’t see coming: amidst all that Frenchie attitude, Cosmo & Simone radiated a constant, unwavering sense of admiration and love for their family. It was so clear to me, throughout our session, that these “big dogs at heart” feel so big & confident because their parents and human “brother” are by their side. They were often checking on their people (especially their mom) during our time together, almost seeming to get their positive energy from their family’s presence. I have a feeling that these close family ties of love & belonging are what let Cosmo & Simone act so “big”.

Sound cheesy? Maybe. But after years of working with families, I know genuine connection when I see it. So let’s just say Cosmo & Simone are two very lucky dogs.

We started our photo session in the studio – Simone is on the left and Cosmo’s on the right!

This is Cosmo Kramer, named for his quirky mannerisms that evoke the Seinfeld character. And COME ON is there possibly a more handsome dog out there?! That blocky head, those inky eyes… he’s gorgeous. (No surprise that he’s a former show dog!) My favorite fact about Cosmo is that he watches TV and only gets upset when he sees 2 things: penguins and Nazis!

And this is the sweet Simone, infamous in her family for having no chill. Whatsoever. Clearly. (But believe it or not, she wasn’t the rascal who ran straight into my camera!!)

Martha, Chris and Vincent, thank you so much for a fun afternoon! I can’t wait to show you the rest of our images very soon! :)

Loews Surf Dog Competition 2013 – Imperial Beach, San Diego, CA

Monday, June 24th, 2013

What an incredible day at the beach! Sun, sand, and surfing dogs – add in a few doggles and you can’t beat that combination! Saturday was the 8th Annual Loews Surf Dog Competition, and let me tell you, if you weren’t there, you missed out! The streets of Imperial Beach were jam-packed with cars for miles in every direction; I was shocked at how many people & dogs were there. Then again, this was my first-ever dog surfing competition, so I didn’t know what I was getting myself into… still, I think anyone would have said “wow” upon seeing thousands of human & canine spectators in one place! It was awesome to see everyone supporting the dogs out there in the water; there were huge rounds of applause and cheers for any dog that successfully rode in to shore! And of course plenty of “oooh”s and laughs at the wipeouts! Check out a few of my favorite photos from the event!

This is Abbie Girl, an Australian kelpie & the champion of the small dog category! She was a total pro.

Sometimes I found the people’s faces just as amusing as the dogs’! Heehee!

And let’s give a little credit to the people out there! I think the dogs may have actually had a pretty easy time, just standing on those boards… their human helpers were always in prime position to get smacked by the waves!

This guy was such a goofball – and a great surfer, too!

These dogs are smart, they know when to jump off & save themselves! Haha! There were lots of funny wipeouts!

I was SO impressed by the dogs that actually shared surfboards!! These two worked the board like it was nothing.

Uhhh… bird costumes?? What? Haha, these three definitely had an extra challenge out there.

Here’s another reason the event was so exciting: we were in the presence of celebrities!  This is Ricochet, a service dog that surfs with people with disabilities! She’s an incredible surfer and a beautiful spirit. Check out her website here, and if the videos there don’t make you cry or at least tear up, well, you’re stronger than me. She also has a super-active Facebook page!

And here’s the one-and-only Tillman! He’s mostly famous for skateboarding (check out the video that made him famous; it has 20 million hits, no big deal) but he was out there on a surfboard on Saturday! He won the large dog competition!

Dogs of all different shapes & sizes were out there..

The day was gorgeous, of course – it’s San Diego! (gorgeous enough to give me a bit of a sunburn, unfortunately. haha oh well.)

I found it fascinating that there were photographers out there, in the waves, with waterproof casings for their cameras! That is DEFINITELY where I want to be next year!!

This photo sums up the spirit of the day, I think – goooo surf dogs! The cheers were so loud! :)

Whew, that was a lot of photos! And believe it or not, these were just my favorite images from the whole event! If you’d like to see more, or if your dog surfed and you’d like to purchase a print or digital image, visit the event gallery here: http://proofs.allisonshamrell.com.

Oh, and here’s something fun: my photos from the competition were internationally published! Here’s the story from the UK Daily Mail, which asked for my photos to include in their article! I thought I’d left the world of journalism photography behind a few years ago… apparently not! :)

I hope you enjoyed seeing all the photos of these talented dogs! If you’ve never been here before, welcome! You’re visitng my blog, which is where I post about recent events (like this one) and sessions. My website is different; it’s where you can check out my whole portfolio and find info about a session with your dogs! Last but not least, my Facebook page is a pretty fun place too! :) Take a look, click “like”, and you’ll get to see more fun photos like these in your newsfeed!

Thanks for visiting!  :)

Happy Valentine’s Day! ~ {Pace, Florida Pet Photography by Allison Shamrell}

Monday, February 14th, 2011

Listen, nobody ever said Valentine’s Day is for humans only. These dogs are here to prove it!

Big thanks go to We Tuck ‘Em Inn for an amazing, busy day! We practically had a line out the door!

Warning: some pictures are extremely cheesy and/or cute. No need to adjust your monitor.

Some of the dogs that stopped by decided to redecorate my set…

But they were still sweeties!

Getting tired? So is she!
