Pensacola Dog & Family Photography: Duelli & Sprocket

Tuesday, January 15th, 2013

This family actually won a session with me after entering a drawing at Pensacola’s Gallery Night – but that event happened last year, and we haven’t been able to get together until now! I can’t believe we had to wait so long, but let me tell you, this session was worth the wait. Their dogs are Duelli (pronounced “dooli”) the German shepherd, and Sprocket the pomeranian. These boys are super-sweet in their own individual ways: Sprocket loves to get attention (and lap room) from anyone that visits, and he’ll be your best friend if you give him treats & affection! Duelli, on the other hand, is fiercely and beautifully loyal to his mom Krissy; she jokes that “I couldn’t lose him even if I tried!” Together, these boys make the perfect (not to mention photogenic) pair.

Here’s Duelli, with the frisbee that he wanted to include in every. single. photo.

How to Trap a Pomeranian: Sprocket couldn’t wiggle his way out of this photo, since his dad had him trapped!

A pomeranian smiles up at the camera from in between his owner's legs and feet.

They have an old VW bug named Petunia… so OBVIOUSLY we took a few photos with it! How adorable are they??

Beautiful dogs, beautiful family. I love it.

Thanks for a wonderful afternoon session, Krissy & Mark!  (Oh, and a note to future clients: if you invite my husband and I over for dinner after our session, you win MAJOR brownie points. Just sayin. :) )

Family Portraits ~ {Pensacola Pet Photography by Allison Shamrell}

Saturday, December 17th, 2011

I had to save this image for a blog post all its own. You see, I’m totally comfortable photographing dogs: does it have a tail? four legs? a wet nose? If yes, then let’s go! I love everything about working with dogs, and I’m not exaggerating when I say I’m head-over-heels in love with my job!

Now, you ask me to photograph your family – and it’s made up of entirely humans? That’s when I start to get nervous, and yes I think I’m slightly backwards as a photographer for being more natural working with another species. But there you have it. (Maybe it’s because I don’t have human kids yet…. hmmmm….) So when my clients come to me wanting portraits that mix people and dogs, yes, I get nervous – but I also get SO excited! I think this is because I get to start within my bubble of comfort (pretty much anything without a tail is outside of that bubble), but also move slightly outwards and improve my photographic technique and skill level. Plus, I think the connection people have with their pets is absolutely magical – I’m constantly in awe of it when I spend time with my clients, and I think that a wordless bond between two creatures can easily be stronger than one built on words. And the resulting photos can be much more powerful as well, so in an odd way, photographing people and their pets can often be the highlight of a session for me.

That’s a pretty long preamble to a post containing one photo. So I’ll only say one more thing, and I’m just gonna put it out there: I love this photo.

Thanksgiving in Virginia ~ {Stafford Child Photography by Allison Shamrell}

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

I love Thanksgiving! I really do. It’s the holiday of family time, eating delicious food, and laziness, and all three activities are top-notch in my book. So I was very excited for our Thanksgiving this year, even more so because we didn’t get to spend it last year with any extended family.

Early last week, we packed up the car and drove. And drove. And drove, until we reached Stafford, Virginia, a town just south of the Quantico military base where my brother-in-law is stationed. We got to see his family (including meeting our 5-month-old niece!) and my husband’s uncle’s family, who happens to have girls the exact same ages as our nieces. (I think they are our cousins… bah family ties confuse me.) Clearly I couldn’t resist bringing my camera… so here are just a few of the photos I took on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Let me tell you what, it was odd to photograph subjects that didn’t have tails.

 First we went to the park! This is Joy, my niece, 3 years old.

Next to Joy is Laia (pronounced “lye-uh”), also 3 years old

Laia’s mom is from Barcelona, which is fabulous in my opinion!

I’m told by Laia’s dad that this is a fake smile. I still think it’s adorable.

The many faces of Joy Shamrell:

The girls loved running around with Bailey… and vice versa!

I wish everybody could have been in focus for this photo, but it was getting dark (fellow photogs will understand) and it turns out dogs run much faster than 3-year-olds. Who knew?

There was a lot of “No, it’s my turn to hold the leash!”

Aw. Precious.

She couldn’t be cuter.

Just one of my daughter. The girls called her name so much and at so many random times, that I halfway thought it would lose all meaning to her.

Thanks, Virginia Shamrells, for being such wonderful hosts! And everyone else: I hope your Thanksgiving was as full of love and togetherness as ours was – but hopefully less time in the car with a dog.

Bye bye!
