In-Home Cat Photography in Del Mar, CA

Tuesday, June 17th, 2014

I was thrilled when Kiva’s mom invited me back to Del Mar for another in-home cat photography session! Do you remember Kiva’s blog post from a few weeks ago? She’s an absolutely gorgeous 17-year-old ragdoll kitty, and while photo sessions are not what she considers the ideal way to spend her time, she posed like a champ in her happy place (the garden), and even inside for some “studio” images! That’s right, I brought & set up my studio equipment – backdrop, lights, and everything – in Kiva’s home, so she wouldn’t have to travel down to San Diego to the studio. For special cases, like 17-year-old cats, I’m happy to create an entirely in-home experience, because that’s the best way to keep pets like Kiva comfortable. A pet’s comfort & happiness is paramount during their photo session, and Kiva’s session was a great example of making that happen, even with studio images!

Kiva was happy to pose for us – as long as she wanted to be in the spot we placed her in! She’s definitely a “my way or the highway” kind of cat… and in fact, she reminds me of the quote from Henry Ford: “Any customer can have a car painted any color he wants, so long as it is black.” Haha!

She never minds spending time in her happy place – and this scene might look familiar if you saw her last blog post! But this time, We decided a few roses would complement Kiva’s pretty fur, so we styled the flowers around her!

This is Pixie, one of Kiva’s siblings, testing out the in-home studio backdrop! She couldn’t stop playing, in fact – if she wasn’t stretched out on the backdrop playing with a toy, she was batting the corners of the backdrop, seeing how it tasted, or running around on it! Nonstop playfulness; it was too cute!

Amie, thanks again for another fabulous session! I can’t wait to show you the new set of images of Kiva & her siblings! :)

Del Mar Cat Photography: Kiva the Ragdoll

Sunday, May 18th, 2014

I absolutely love meeting pets & owners that are deeply connected to each another, and this Del Mar cat photography session was no exception! Kiva is a 17-year-old ragdoll cat who lives with her mom, Amie, in their gorgeous Del Mar home, and it was clear to see how close they are. (I would post a photo of the two of them together, but I know humans typically like to see & approve their photos before they go on the internet, haha!) Kiva happens to be, well, slightly past her prime physically – she is 17! – so we went about the session slowly and at her pace. We also gave her frequent breaks in her “happy place”, the garden! She was incredibly cooperative and let us play with her all afternoon long… all three of us had a great time! And plus, I even got to meet a few of Kiva’s feline siblings; she has several younger brothers and sisters but their mom wanted Kiva to be the center of attention for our session, since they’ve been together the longest. So without further ado, let me introduce you to this very special kitty!

Kiva’s backyard was a dream come true to photograph! So many flowers and so much greenery… I love the attention to detail that I always see in my Del Mar clients’ homes! I suppose it’s reason #824 why I love Del Mar photo sessions

And in standard feline fashion, she informed us (in a not-so-subtle way) when she was done with our shenanigans.

Amie, thank you for a fabulous afternoon! I can’t wait to see you again soon & show you the rest of our photos! :)

Studio Pet Photography for Dogs & Cats – Featuring the Animals of La Jolla Colony Vet Hospital!

Tuesday, May 6th, 2014

This studio pet photography session had its beginnings a few weeks ago, at the Helen Woodward Animal Center Puppy Love 5k event… I was chatting with many of the runners & walkers as they came back from the race, and a woman with an adorable, border-collie-mix dog walks up to my booth! I came out from behind my table to meet her dog, we get to talking, and eventually she introduces herself as a veterinarian and the new owner of La Jolla Colony Veterinary Hospital! She asked me about working together on some new decor for her clinic’s lobby, and of course I was happy to oblige! I absolutely love working with local businesses, and if I can give fellow entrepreneurs a few pieces of art that makes them love their business just a little bit more – especially if it features their own pets! – then I consider it a match made in heaven! :)

So imagine my surprise when she told me that I wouldn’t just be working with her border collie mix, Mony – but also with her terrier mix dog and her two cats! Cats in the studio?! That’s only happened a few times before, with – ahem – mixed results, so I knew this would be a verrrrry interesting session! Let me introduce you to the stars of the show…

This is Mony (left) and Daisy Mae (right)! Mony is a border collie/spaniel mix, and Daisy is… well… a big question mark! She has terrier in her heritage, that’s for sure, but after that your guess is as good as mine. Mony is 5 and Daisy is 10, but both have the energy level of a 1-year-old! I just love these two!

And here are the brave felines that came along, too! Just wait until you hear their names – and I don’t mind telling you, since their mom is a vet and you know she loves them very much (even if their names don’t exactly suggest that they’re beloved members of the family): Booger & Skidmark! Haha!! I laughed out loud when I heard that! Even more interesting: you’d never guess it from their photos, but these kitties are actually littermates! Despite their hesitance, I really enjoyed working with them both – we put the “pet” in studio pet photography session, rather than giving all the attention to their canine siblings… cats deserve their time in the studio, too!

Sarah & Ben, I loved getting together with you both – thank you for bringing everyone in to the studio (I know it wasn’t easy)! I can’t wait to see these fluffy faces on the walls of your new clinic! :)

In-Home Cat Photography Session: Tobie

Monday, December 17th, 2012

Some of you may recognize the bed & wall in these photos from a photo I posted to Facebook a couple of weeks ago… that’s because Tobie the cat is Siena, Olive & Gabe‘s brother! I spent one session with the dogs, and one with this handsome feline boy. And while Siena & Olive have a fascinating foreign upbringing, Tobie is an all-American, homegrown house cat! He’s very special to his mom Caroline, and I really loved seeing the relationship they have during our session… he went from trying to scurry off the bed to rolling and rollicking in a small pile of catnip! Haha, it was so funny to see him slowly convince himself that a bit of catnip (& plenty of treats) was worth posing for a few photos. So here’s Tobie’s Sneak Peek!

Um, yeah… I think he knows he’s adorable.

Surprisingly Social Cats and a Loving Golden Retriever

Monday, August 27th, 2012

I was very excited for this session to arrive (it’s been a long time coming) for two reasons: one, the animals are adorable! Two, the people are awesome! Andrea & Melissa discovered that we had all signed up to go to the Pensacola Craft Beer Festival in November, and oh my goodness, one of the things my friends know about me is that I love a good beer. (Not the cheap stuff!) My husband even brews beer here in our house – and our fridge is always stocked with IPAs and pale ales. The hoppier, the better, really. So let’s just say I got pretty excited to learn that a couple of my clients are beer snobs as well! (ha!)

Anyways, beyond fully approving of Andrea & Melissa’s beverage of choice, I had an absolute blast with them on Saturday. We started out at their house, and even though we expected just one of their four cats to make an appearance, suddenly ALL of them were out exploring my equipment and feeling social! I love it when my clients are surprised to see how well I get along with their pets, and this was no exception. And these cats are all so gorgeous! (Tigger (on the right) is only pretending to hide from me… we hung out on top of the dining room table later on. Well, one of us was on the table.)

A cat sits on the kitchen counter and another peeks out from behind an ottoman.

But the true star of the show was Lucas the golden retriever. He’s happiest when he’s so close to his parents that he’s practically stepping on their toes… but we managed to get a few solo photos of the big guy! He’s such a love-bug :)

Okay just one more… only because it’s already one of my favorites from the day!

Thanks for a really fun session, Lucas! I’ll see you, your feline siblings & your parents again soon!  (… who’s bringing the beer?)  :)
