San Diego Pets Bernie, Stella & PeeWee!

Wednesday, November 12th, 2014

I am absolutely thrilled to into introduce you to this trio of adorable San Diego pets! I knew we would have a great session even when I met Bernie and Stella, the dogs of the family, for their Pre-Session Consultation last week. They’re such happy pups, and it was clear that they love going out and meeting new friends just as much as relaxing at home with their family. (PeeWee didn’t join us for that meeting – but that’s okay, he’s a cat! He’s allowed to stay at home, haha!)

This is Stella! She’s a mutt, and it’s anyone’s guess what breeds are in her heritage – but they certainly made her beautiful, didn’t they? Her fluffy, curly fur is just gorgeous, and those deep brown eyes just kill me. Here she is at the front gate of her house in Kensington!

This is Bernie the yellow Labrador, with his mom, Anya. When Bernie visits the beach, he usually likes to roam free all by himself, but we caught him in a rather snuggly mood. :)

Aren’t they a gorgeous pair?

And we can’t forget PeeWee! He’s an adorable little kitten, only 7 months old, and he loves to play, especially with big sister Stella. (Watching the two of them roughhousing is an absolutely hilarious sight!)

Anya and Markus, I had a simply wonderful time with you both during our session! I can’t wait to show you the rest of our photos! :)

Fiesta Island Dog Photography with Butterbean the Lab!

Tuesday, October 14th, 2014

Butterbean is a dog that’s fully labrador, in every sense of the word: he loves water, can’t get enough of fetch, and is always boundlessly happy! So it was my absolute pleasure to photograph him recently at Fiesta Island in San Diego! It’s one of his favorite places in the city, since he & his mom visit there pretty often to play fetch and make new friends. But we found a part of the island that was all to ourselves; because as I mentioned in this blog post about dogs in parks, I don’t often hold photo sessions at dog parks/beaches, just since that usually means adding a few dozen guests & distractions to the experience – which doesn’t exactly make for better photos! So we let all the focus be on Butterbean in our secluded little area of Fiesta Island, and I think we have some really great images to show for it. For his part, Bean didn’t mind at all – he was just happy to be there with his mom, playing fetch and eating treats! And really, for a dog, what better way is there to spend an afternoon? :)

Butterbean has a bow tie! How adorable is that?! To start this photo session, we took a few photos on dry land, bow tie and all, before letting him loose in the water…

Of course, no Fiesta Island dog photography session would be complete without a few action photos… and Butterbean didn’t disappoint! Fetch is one of his favorite things in the world; can’t you just see the enthusiasm in his eyes?

His mom says that when his tongue sticks out sideways, that means Bean is really happy. So even though there’s lots of drool in this close-up, I love it!

We even stayed long enough to watch the sun go down… it was a beautiful night.

Devon, I had a blast with you & Bean! We have lots of cute photos to look through… so I’ll be in touch soon! :)

Belle the Bichon Frise

Monday, October 13th, 2014

I’ve always known Bichon Frises to be happy little fluff-balls of energy, ready & willing to please their parents all day long…  and Belle is a shining example of that wonderful Bichon disposition! This little cutie recently moved to San Diego from Texas, just a few months ago – and it’s not that often that I’m more of a “local” than my clients, so I was happy to welcome Belle and her parents to town! I also had the privilege of introducing them to Powerhouse Park in Del Mar, a place which my regular blog readers know I love to visit… but even though I’ve been there a few times before, I found a couple of fresh new spots to photograph Belle that I’d never seen before! Let me tell you, looking at the world with photographer’s eyes is an exciting way to see things – new opportunities pop up just about everywhere. And honestly, where could I put Belle’s cute little face so that she wouldn’t look adorable? Nowhere, obviously. :)

If you met Belle for the first time, you’d never guess that she’s 12 years old! Those bright eyes (not to mention her desire to run everywhere and explore everything!) make you think she’s a puppy! But no, she’s actually a very youthful senior dog.

Love that smile! This was one of Belle’s first trips to the beach!

But really, the purpose of this session was for Christmas card photos. Belle has always been the star of her parents’ yearly holiday card, and as they moved to San Diego this year, their friends all asked them “Will Belle still be on your Christmas cards? Will you take her to the beach for Christmas photos?” So that’s what we did – and here’s one of my early favorites from our holiday-themed photos!

Ginger & David, thank you for a wonderful session with your incredibly well-trained dog! Belle is such a cutie… I can’t wait to show you the rest of our photos! :)

Vacation Beach Dog Photography Session

Sunday, October 5th, 2014

The other day, I received a message from a lovely person who happens to live in Arizona with her two dogs. At first I was confused – but it turns out, they would be vacationing in San Diego the following week, and wanted to have a photo session to commemorate their time here! How fun is that?!

Vacation photo sessions are a growing trend these days; photographers will follow families around Disneyland, or join couples as they explore Paris. Many high-end beach resorts offer custom photography as an in-house service. So I suppose it was only a matter of time before I heard from a visitor to San Diego, since we’re A) a fabulous vacation destination, and B) one of America’s most dog-friendly cities!

I was thrilled to meet Daisy (a German Shorthaired Pointer) and Duke (an English Pointer) in Del Mar for their photo session – and they were thrilled about all the birds that were nearby! These two have hunting drives like you wouldn’t believe, especially Daisy. But I was able to snag their attention for a few photos, and we had a great time playing in the grass and the sand!

This is Duke, who was actually on a leash at the time. Both dogs’ instincts to chase the birds were so high that their mom didn’t feel comfortable taking them off-leash; so we didn’t! Safety first! (This is the sort of thing Photoshop was made for, haha!)

And this is Daisy, the huntress. I’m sure there’s a bird or two out there in the water!

We enjoyed a gorgeous sunset on the beach that night. I just love these dogs’ powerful silhouettes.

It was such a pleasure to meet all of you, Gaby! Can’t wait to see you again soon! :)

Del Mar Maltipoo Photo Session with Finn

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2014

If you’re looking at the title of this blog post and wondering if I’ve photographed a new species of animal, rest assured: Finn is a fun-loving canine! He just happens to have a rather modern breed name. Maltipoos are maltese-poodle mixes, and they’re just one of a huge list of new poodle-mix combinations that are popping up everywhere! Yorkiepoos, pekepoos, cavapoos… not to mention goldendoodles and labradoodles! Poodles are a great breed for families who can’t have a dog that sheds, and they’ve been bred recently with all types of other dogs to combine their best qualities for people of all different lifestyles. Check out this website for more information and a list of hybrid dog breeds you’ve probably never heard of!

This maltipoo photo session in particular had a very special purpose: Finn’s parents are getting married, so one of their photos will help them announce their wedding date to their friends & families! How great is that?! I love that they wanted to include Finn (their “first child”) in that process!

First we played in Powerhouse Park, where Finn chased his tennis ball and was fed plenty of treats. He also showed-off a bit, with this nice long sit-stay! :)

Then we headed down to the beach, where I learned that seaweed is one of Finn’s favorite things. He loves to play with it, tug on it, drag it around the beach like a trophy… haha, it was too cute to see him prancing around with a big chunk of seaweed in his mouth!

What do you think… is this a cute “save the date” photo?

And finally, after running in all directions and chasing a few birds, Finn settled down for a reflective moment in the last light of the day.

Wynter & Craig, I’m so excited for your save the date – and the rest of our photos too, haha! I’ll be in touch! :)
