Abby the Hound Dog – Photos in San Diego

Thursday, August 25th, 2016

Are you a sucker for a dog with a gorgeous brown coat & the deep, soulful eyes of a hound dog? Like I am? Well if so, you’ve come to the right place. Abby the hound dog mix has those characteristics, and with sweetness to spare!

Abby lives with her dad in North Park, and I have to admit, I’m kind of jealous of her life! She gets to spend plenty of time with her dad on a daisy basis, since he sometimes works from home – and when he works at the office she often gets to come too! Plus, her favorite treats are Greenies, which is a pretty awesome treat to have a constant supply of… this girl might just be a little bit spoiled. But that’s okay with me, haha – she & my Bailey have a lot in common! ;)

We started our photo session at the studio, which – as it turns out – now ranks pretty high on the list of places that Abby does NOT like! As soon as my lights started flashing, she decided that this wasn’t a game she wanted to play. And she’s a rescue dog, so who knows what kind of exposure she’s had in the past to lightning or flashing lights. So we quickly realized that Abby would prefer to fast-forward to the outdoors portion of our session – and that’s exactly what we did. We grabbed just a few portraits in the studio and hightailed it to the beach! And for whatever reason, things seemed to be working against us that day: we drove into Pacific Beach and saw nothing but clouds on the horizon. Totally gray skies and water… yuck! But we decided to wait it out (instead of rescheduling), in the hopes that the sky would clear up, and I’m so glad we did! I’m absolutely loving Abby’s portraits, even though our session definitely didn’t go “according to plan”, haha!

This is Abby’s sweet, pretty, hound dog face. I just love her rich brown eyes & flappy ears!

Abby loves the beach! Although I think she’d love anywhere with that much room to explore, run around, and chase the birds…

… and then sunset happened. And this is exactly why I was suddenly thankful for all those clouds.

Bill, I had a great time with you & Abby! Thank you for being such a good sport! :)  I’ll talk to you soon!

Stella the Shepherd Mix on Coronado Beach!

Friday, August 19th, 2016

This photo session is proof that I get to work with the most gorgeous dogs in San Diego. I don’t know how, I don’t know why – but my gosh, Stella the shepherd mix is stunning, and I’m pretty thrilled that I got to spend the afternoon with her & her family!

Stella is a 3-year-old shepherd mix (with collie? maybe?) and she lives with her parents in the Mission Hills neighborhood of San Diego. She’s an athletic, energetic pup and her happy place is Coronado Beach – so that’s exactly where we went for our photo session! And boy, she was excited to be there – although I insisted on staying away from the dog beach. That’s because I didn’t want a million other dogs running through the background (and probably the foreground, too) of all of Stella’s photos… plus, she loves to play with other dogs, so it was much easier for me to get her attention with those dogs a few hundred yards away, haha! I’m pretty sure she thought I was a party pooper for that idea, but I can already tell that the photos are well-worth the private playtime! Stella posed for the camera like a total pro; I couldn’t help but be impressed. And her parents were willing to run up and down the sand with her so many times that I’m pretty sure I gave them a workout, too… so without further ado, here is Stella’s “sneak peek”!

I told you. Stella is gorgeous.

You can’t tucker her out! Trust me, we tried! This dog is a fetch machine. (Well, except for the part of fetch when you’re supposed to bring the ball back… she’s not so great at that part, haha! I think she considers the ball her prize – and why would you give up a prize?)

We ran, fetched & posed until the sun dipped beneath the horizon, and that’s when the truly amazing light came out to play.

Luke & Paige, thank you for a wonderful afternoon! I had such a great time with all three of you! :)

Ruby the Chihuahua Mix in Del Mar, CA (Photos)

Tuesday, April 19th, 2016

I had the pleasure of meeting the most adorable little chihuahua mix in Del Mar recently! Ruby is a happy little dog from Vista, CA that’s always happy to be with her parents, and I met her on the beaches of Del Mar for our photo session!

Ruby is an 11-year-old chihuahua mix, and good luck guessing her other breed(s) – I personally think she’s part coyote, haha! Her soft, fluffy fur seems to overflow from every angle, and I loved seeing all the different positions her big, pointy, expressive ears could take! She loves the beach, although not for the water – this pup is definitely anti-swimming! Her survival instincts took over every time a wave came near, and she’d rush back up the sand to higher ground. That’s only if her mom didn’t scoop her up first, though – Ruby’s mom always kept a watchful eye on Ruby to make sure she was safe! In fact, some of my favorite images from this session are of the two of them, because they have the most amazing connection together. It was beautiful to watch them interact and make sure each other was happy & content. I’m sure that connection has grown even stronger in the last couple of months, since Ruby was unfortunately diagnosed with Addison’s disease, and has been spending more than her fair share of time at the vet. But she’s feeling great these days – her mom is hoping they’ll have several more years together! – and I was glad we were able to get together for this session so I could see Ruby run around the beach with plenty of energy. (Although, truth be told, Ruby’s not terribly big on running or playing fetch or getting much of a workout. She’d much rather meander around the sand, stay close to her parents and keep a much more relaxed pace! She’s at the beach for leisure, not exercise, haha!)

I just love Ruby’s warm coloring against the cool blues of the beach & sky! She’s such a cutie!

Close to her parents = Ruby’s happy place. Always.

She may be 11 years old, but she can still run down the coastline like a puppy – especially if there are treats involved, haha!

Brooke & JB, thank you so much for introducing me to your adorable little girl. I’m looking forward to seeing you all again soon! :)

Engagement Photos with Dogs Hera & Hades

Monday, March 28th, 2016

Oh my goodness – I had a simply amazing photo session recently! Maybe you’ve seen engagement photos with dogs before, but I was honored & thrilled to help this family announce their upcoming wedding, and I’m simply loving how the images are turning out!

But first, let’s back up: I knew I would get along with these pups and their parents as soon as I learned their names! Hera & Hades are named for the Greek mythological figures, Hera the queen of the gods and Hades the god of the underworld. Since I was a literature major in college, I immediately knew I would love these dogs, haha! And shockingly true to her namesake, Hera is an older, calmer dog than her little brother – and she gets a bit jealous whenever someone gives him more attention than her! And Hades is a wild child with fur that’s black as the night sky, and he has an unmistakable devilish personality! Honestly, their parents could not have picked better names. I am seriously impressed!

And unsurprisingly, Hera & Hades were a blast to work with! They cover the entire personality spectrum, so at times it was challenging to balance Hera’s sweet, well-behaved disposition with Hades’ insatiable appetite for trouble… but it made for some fun-filled images and an awesome afternoon! :)

Hera & Hades wanted to help announce their parents’ upcoming wedding! I’m pretty sure they couldn’t be any cuter.

We ran around the beach until everyone was exhausted… wait, scratch that, Hades never gets tired! This boy is a firecracker full of energy, and I loved capturing his incredible spirit!

Hera was much more willing to pose nicely for a few photos… she’s such a beautiful girl, and a total sweetheart too!

McKenzie & Tony, thank you for introducing me to your fun-loving pups! I’m excited to show you the rest of our images soon! :)

More Photos of Sprinkles the Yellow Lab!

Saturday, March 12th, 2016

A familiar face is on the blog again today! :)

Something unexpected came up last week, and Sprinkles’ mom was unable to come in & see all the photos of her gorgeous girl. I was sad that we’d have to reschedule our appointment… so I figured a second sneak peek was in order! Hopefully this makes the wait seem not-so-long, Delicia!

A rare calm moment for Sprinkles, on Coronado Beach…

This is how Sprinkles spent most of our photo session, haha!

Even as the sun slipped past the horizon, I got the feeling Sprinkles could have kept playing with her mom for hours.

That’s all for now! See you soon, Delicia! :)
