Marlow the San Diego Pointer (and his siblings too!)

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2015

Marlow has had a pretty rough couple of months.

I was originally contacted by a friend of Marlow’s family, who heard about Marlow’s recent diagnosis. Brain cancer isn’t easy for any family to go through, and it was especially difficult for Marlow’s parents to accept that there was something wrong with their sweet old man. Marlow means the world to them… and I simply can’t imagine how they were able to swallow such an awful diagnosis. And unfortunately, there were even more worries headed their way: about a month ago, Marlow suffered a stroke which left him temporarily paralyzed. Can you imagine how scared you’d be to wake up one morning and find that your dog can’t move any of his legs? Devon, Marlow’s dad, was carrying him outside to go to the bathroom, and back inside again, several times a day. But despite the odds, Marlow fought back, and within a few days he was walking again! He still runs with a bit of a sideways gallop, a kind of lasting mark from the paralysis… but he’s back to his cheerful, walking-around-on-his-own self! (Although he’s a LOT hungrier these days, which is a side effect of his medication. On the bright side, that meant he was super-attentive to the treats I brought!)

If you can, I urge you to send happy thoughts & prayers to Marlow and his family. They could certainly use them, after all they’ve been through.

But our session wasn’t about concentrating on the past, or his current issues – it was about photographing Marlow’s interminable spirit! It was an honor to meet this handsome old man, and I truly had a great time working with him and his siblings in their Serra Mesa backyard.

This is Marlow! Don’t you love his sweet old face?

This is Marlow’s younger sister, Darla! She’s also a pointer, and acts like a total puppy (even though she’s 4 years old). She’s happiest when she’s chasing her ball – this girl is an athlete – but I caught her during a (rare) still moment!

And this is Cielo, the 8-year-old husky, to round out the pack. Cielo is an absolutely gorgeous girl who insists on beating Marlow to the ball every time their parents throw it, haha!

Okay, okay, one more… I told you Darla is an athlete! See that purple ball in her mouth? It gives her the power to leap higher than you thought possible… this is my favorite image of her gravity-defying feats!

Devon & Amanda, thank you so much for a fun-filled afternoon with your pups. And Brittany, thank you for introducing us! I’m so excited to show you the rest of our photos soon!

Photos of Daisy, the San Diego Boxer

Wednesday, May 20th, 2015

One day I received a call from someone looking for a great Mother’s Day gift – something to celebrate her mom’s relationship with her 4-legged daughter! I was happy to oblige, and that’s how I met Daisy and her mom!

Daisy is an 8-year-old San Diego boxer, and a total sweetheart, who lives with her mom in Point Loma. She enjoys spending her time in her amazing house, which is full of favorite spots to lounge around in/on: her crate, her bed in the living room, the bed in the spare bedroom, her mom’s bed, the front patio, the backyard… so we spent a relaxing afternoon lounging around in all of the different locations!

I have to admit, I loved seeing the relationship that Daisy shares with her mom. These two are incredibly close; Daisy was always keeping an eye on her mom no matter how many treats I had in my hand! And when I first arrived, Daisy put on a pretty intimidating “guard dog” display of barking & growling – but the second her mom said “it’s ok Daisy!”, she completely relaxed. Some of my favorite images from our photo session feature both ladies together, but for this sneak peek, I’ll just focus on the star of the photo session! :)

Oh, that sweet face, and those big eyes… Daisy, you’re such a beautiful pup.

Daisy gave me the impression of being a very wise dog…

Smooshy-Faced Pets Tito & Fizgig

Thursday, April 9th, 2015

In the contact form on my website, I ask my prospective clients to describe their pet(s) in 3 words. I think it’s a fun way to get to know my clients right from the start, and I usually receive sweet adjectives like “loving”, “adorable” and “perfect”… but this time, the first word that Tito & Fizgig’s mom used was “smooshy-faced”! Haha! I knew from the start this would be a fun session, and little did I know how accurate that adjective really was! Tito is a smooshy-faced pug, an adorable little guy with an irresistible urge to pee on nearly everything, and Fizgig is an exotic shorthair cat with a total lack of a side profile because his face is so very smooshed! Haha – these two pets are totally outgoing and attention-seeking, so they were an absolute blast to work with!

But I have to be honest with you: this session posed a unique challenge for me, because it took place at Sorrento Valley Pet Cemetery. Tito & Fizgig’s mom Natalie works in the front office, and somewhat surprisingly, the quiet grounds with gorgeous green grass & foliage turned out to be a beautiful setting for photos… and it was actually my very first time stepping foot into a pet cemetery. Having the career that I have, and knowing what I know about the relationships people have with their pets, let’s be real: I pretty much started to cry as soon as I saw the first gravesite. I read a few gravestones, took in the memorials that owners had left for their pets (whose photos were often engraved on the stones) and nearly broke down crying right there before we even started the session… gah! It was a really emotional place to be. But instead of thinking about what all these pets meant to their owners, I just had to concentrate on the fluffy ball of life right in front of my eyes, Tito! Luckily, he was running around and acting like a little goofball (as pugs are so talented at doing) so our session began right after I wiped my eyes… and you know what? Even though we were in a sad place, where so many people had to say goodbye to their 4-legged family members, I’d like to think that photographing Tito & his infectious, happy spirit as he ran around the cemetery was a celebration of life. And no matter how long or short our lives may be, it was a lovely afternoon celebrating the relationship Tito & Fizgig have with their mom, which is just as meaningful as the past relationships the peacefully-buried pets in the cemetery once had with their owners, too. It was really an interesting day, and it gave me a bit of new perspective.

Anyways! Whew! On to the photos! This adorable little mug is Tito!

He even posed with the flowers for us… although admittedly, it took a bit of convincing. :)

And this is Tito’s brother, Fizgig! He’s one of the most outgoing, active cats I’ve ever met – and look at that smooshy face!!

Natalie, thank you for an entirely unique photo session. I can’t wait to show you the rest of our photos soon! :)

La Mesa Pet Photography with Bimmer, Laila & Leo

Tuesday, March 17th, 2015

I’m so happy to introduce you to this beautiful pack of dogs! I shared a La Mesa pet photography session with Bimmer, Laila & Leo recently, and I call them a “pack” on purpose because that’s exactly what they are: an inseparable group of best friends! Honestly, it was pretty darn cute when we started out working with just Leo, the youngest of the bunch, all by himself… and he simply wouldn’t have it! He kept racing back over to the house to see when his older siblings would be joining us! So while their close-knit bond made our “individual” photos a little bit tougher to come by, haha, we had an absolute blast playing in the backyard all together! These pups take fetch seriously! And it was adorable to see the routine patterns they’d worked out amongst themselves, each time the ball was thrown: Bimmer would only go for the ball if it came his way, whereas pups Laila & Leo ran at breakneck speed to get the ball, wherever it was, and they’d just end up in a wrestling match at the end of every toss anyway! :)

So we shared a lovely afternoon with perfectly soft light in their backyard, and amidst the chaos of balls, treats, toys, and three big dogs running in every direction, I think we ended up with some great images!

Here’s big old man Bimmer (pronounced “bee-mer”)! He’s a gorgeous golden retriever with a stunning red coat and beautiful, soulful eyes. His parents say that he’s enjoying a “second puppyhood” since they made the introduction of his younger brother, Leo, to the family – and I believe it! He has such a fun spirit!

This pretty girl is Laila! She’s a cream-colored golden retriever, and I’d say she’s the calmest of the bunch, relatively speaking… but when she gets going, watch out! This girl is fast! What a beauty.

And this handsome boy is Leo (short for Leonardo)! He’s still a puppy, and simply can’t get enough of playing with his older brother & sister. (And yes, that’s grass on his tongue! Haha!)

Dee & Pat, I’m so glad you saw my portraits hanging up in Hairy & Merry, because I had such a great time at our photo session & getting to know you both! I’m excited to show you the rest of our images soon! :)

Vista Pet Photography with Colt the Beagle & Brandi the Shih Tzu/Yorkie Mix!

Monday, March 16th, 2015

I recently shared a Vista pet photography session with two adorable subjects: Colt the beagle and Brandi the shih tzu/Yorkie mix! These pups were so much fun to work with: Brandi is a 10-year-old girl who looks like she’s 100% shih tzu, but her parents insist there’s Yorkie in her heritage too! (I couldn’t tell, haha!) :)  She was happy to participate in our photo session for all the yummy treats I was doling out, but she definitely has a bit more reserved personality than her brother, Colton. He’s a 4-year-old beagle and a hilarious, mischievous little man! He was quick to jump into action, try and steal the treats I was giving his sister, bark at any dog that dared walk by… he definitely kept me laughing for our whole session! I’ll keep today’s post all about the dogs, but I can’t wait to eventually share a few family photos from this session too – I know we got some super-cute ones, and I just loved working with this little family! :)

Here is Colt! Believe it or not, this was the very first frame out of my camera from the day- can’t you tell by that smile that he’s planning on getting into trouble in the immediate future? :)

And here’s his older (but smaller) sister, Brandi! She’s such a cutie!

… and she’s quite the poser, too!

And finally, I can’t resist sharing this one of Colt & his dad – they love each other so much, and I just loved watching them play together! (Especially the paw on dad’s face in the background, haha!)

Sarah & Luis, thank you for introducing me to your dogs (and that cute park near your house)! I’m excited to see you again soon!
