San Diego Mutts Dexter & Rocco!

Wednesday, October 29th, 2014

When you see these adorable San Diego mutts’ faces, you’re going to swear that they’re related – but Dexter & Rocco are brothers by adoption, not blood! These pups are practically clones of each other, but ironically, their personalities couldn’t be more different. Dexter is the old man, slow to get around and always happy to lay down & relax. He’s a total mama’s boy and is rarely more than a few feet from his mom, Paula! Rocco, on the other hand, is a completely independent spirit. He’s energetic, ball-obsessed (seriously: obsessed) and will do anything in the world for a treat. I had a simply wonderful time in their backyard as we played fetch, tested their obedience skills, and relaxed with mom & dad!

This is Rocco! He’s a relatively small dog, but like I said, he has a huge personality! I think I took this photo a nanosecond before he jumped up & ran over to me, demanding the treat that I’d promised him, haha!

And here’s Dexter… don’t you love that sweet old face?! I can’t get enough of his happy smile! This is a new favorite image for me… and it’s one of the few in which Dexter isn’t velcro’ed to his mom’s side. He is simply devoted to her.

These dogs are nearly identical – in coloring, body structure, practically everything… even down to their paws! (But now you can see how much bigger Dexter is than Rocco; isn’t it incredible how they look so similar despite their different backgrounds?)

Paula & Marc, I had a simply fabulous (and slightly exhausting) time with you both! Thanks for being so much fun – I can’t wait to show you the rest of our photos! :)

Senior Dog Photography in San Diego: Molly the Jack Russell

Wednesday, October 8th, 2014

Molly is an adorable and much-loved senior dog who lives with her family in northern San Diego! She’s 12 years old, and was her parents’ only child for five whole years before they had a little girl… and to be honest with you, when I heard that, it hit pretty close to home, since Mr. Shamrell & I have had Bailey for almost five years now too – with no human kids on the horizon quite yet! :)  So I completely understood how much Molly means to her parents, and it was simply lovely to spend a bit of my afternoon with this wonderful family!

Molly is ball-obsessed. Seriously. She LOVES tennis balls… and I’m told that her favorite place to stock up is at Earthwise Pet Supply!  I met Molly’s family for the first time at an event there a couple of months ago, and they told me even then that she loooooves to play with tennis balls. In fact, this expression is pretty much all you see on Molly’s face when you’re in the backyard with her; one of her favorite things in life is to play (especially with her dad) and she always seems giddy with anticipation for the next throw of the ball! How cute is that big grin?!

We eventually convinced Molly to take a quick break from fetching & gnawing on the ball to relax on the couch… but I think she just wanted to get back to playing again! Contrary to what you might think, “senior dog photography” doesn’t mean that we rest & lay down the whole time… for Molly, it’s just the opposite! (She may have slowed down a bit in recent years, but she is a Jack Russell terrier, after all!)

At one point, after realizing that all of us wanted the ball back from her, she wandered into the bushes and “hid” the ball there! Haha! It was so cute… “What ball? I don’t have anything in here!” What an innocent face…

Kathy & Kieran, thank you for inviting me to your gorgeous house to meet Molly! I had a wonderful time with all five of you – and I can’t wait to see you both again soon! :)

Spring Valley Pet Photography Session with Bridgette the Miniature Poodle!

Friday, October 3rd, 2014

I shared a lovely & intimate Spring Valley pet photography session with Bridgette the poodle and her parents recently! I describe it as “intimate” because we spent the whole session at their house; I simply adore when images are so personal that they feature my clients’ pets in the places they love the most. And Bridgette decided to show me her bed (okay, technically it’s her parents’ bed) and backyard, the two spots where she spends most of her time!

Bridgette is a mama’s girl, in every sense of the word. When she felt like our photo session was moving too fast, she would retreat to mom’s feet and politely asked for a quick break from posing. It was so sweet to see… they have an incredibly close relationship, and I loved photographing the bond between them. Bridgette is not technically a puppy anymore – in fact, she’s been by her mother’s side for over a decade. People describe dogs as “loving” and “loyal”, and Bridgette is a shining example of that incredible canine devotion!

Like I said, Bridgette loves her mom more than anything, but I think grass comes in at a close second! She was constantly “snacking” during our session, haha!

Bridgette is in her happy place. Clearly.

Oh, Bridgette… those eyes. That personality. I can barely handle it.

Thanks again for a lovely afternoon, Carla & Stephen! I can’t wait to see you both again soon. Give Bridgette a hug for me! :)

Pete the Pit Bull in Escondido, CA

Tuesday, July 29th, 2014

I recently had the pleasure of photographing one of the happiest, smiley-est pit bulls I’ve ever met! Pete is a 10-year-old boy who lives in Escondido with his parents, and I simply couldn’t stop smiling during our session because of his big, goofy grin! I think Pete should be the poster dog for pit bull smiles; he even lets it take over his entire face when he runs! (But you’ll have to watch the Facebook page for one of his action photos!)

Pete’s mom is a coworker of Maddie’s mom, and I was thrilled to hear from her because I simply love pitties. And despite his tough-dog bark when I rang the doorbell at his house, he warmed right up and was happy to show me around his favorite spots in the neighborhood… starting with his spot on the couch. And his “spot” isn’t small – it’s half of the sectional! Haha!

Here’s Pete’s “serious face”. It’s rare to see, but adorable.

And then we went outside – running across the grass, basking in the flowers, relaxing with mom & dad, and generally taking it easy. His parents said it was the most activity Pete had seen in a while – and when you’re a 10-year-old homebody, I suppose a photo session is the highlight of your week, haha!

Pete, thank you for being such a good, happy boy. Angie & Daniel, I can’t wait to see you both again very soon! Just please leave all your Trojan paraphernalia at home, haha! :)

In-Home Pet Photography Session in Rancho Santa Fe, CA, featuring Goober & Fozzie!

Wednesday, June 18th, 2014

I recently photographed a wonderfully relaxed session, with two handsome dogs that have the most adorable names! Goober is a senior golden retriever, and Fozzy (yes, he’s named after Fozzy Bear) is a 1-year-old labradoodle! We played fetch and rolled around in the grass in their backyard for their in-home pet photography session – and boy, have I been spoiled by my clients’ yards lately! I walked down the stairs to their sprawling lawn, complete with lush trees, bushes, flowers & assorted greenery on every side, and I think I almost fainted! I’m convinced there’s not a prettier backyard in all of Rancho Santa Fe, haha… Plus, I think it’s wonderful to have images that are so personal – the ability to document your own family in your own backyard makes in-home pet photography sessions extra special. So suffice to say that with a gorgeous location, happy dogs and a beautiful family, I was in pet photography heaven! Let me introduce you to the stars of the show:

This is Fozzy! He could be the cover dog for all labradoodles, as far as I’m concerned. #waytoocute

And Fozzy’s older brother, Goober! With a name like that, you know this dog has a silly personality! Goober is definitely a goofball, but he loves being with his family more than anything. And by “being with” I really mean “hovering as close as possible and trying not to give them more than two inches of space”… I think his human brother Jack is standing just barely out of the frame in this image!

And together… well, they’re brothers! Of course they’re best friends! (We took several more “posed” photos of the dogs too, but I thought this image was a nice change of pace for their sneak peek – and it really shows their personalities!)

Karen & Glenn, I hope you have a spectacular vacation, and I can’t wait to see you both again once you’re back in town! Thanks for a fun & fabulous session!
