Roscoe, the San Diego Bichon Frise! (Photos)

January 19th, 2016

If you like dogs that are fluffy, small & adorable, you’re going to LOVE Roscoe! He’s a Bichon Frise that recently visited my studio for his first photo session – and I just couldn’t get enough of his cute little face! His soft, fluffy white fur had been freshly groomed and he was trying hard to be on his best behavior (as long as we rewarded him with treats after each pose)! This dog is really special to his dad, Ron, and to be honest, some of my early favorite images that I’m seeing from the entire session are the photos of the two of them together! We even have some photos with Roscoe’s grandparents, too! But since I know my human clients like to see & approve their photos before I post them online for the world to see, haha, I’ll focus on Roscoe’s solo photos for this sneak peek! And you won’t be disappointed – he did great, especially considering it was his first time in front of the camera! He definitely has a mind of his own (for example, his favorite game is You Can’t Catch Me!), and I think that independent spirit really comes through in our photos. I had such a great time working with Roscoe and his family!

Here he is, fluffy tail and all! Just look at that face!  :)

Roscoe definitely knows how to flash that famous Bichon smile!

We spent a bit of time bringing out Roscoe’s playful side, tossing treats & toys to him as he fetched them all around the backdrop, and I think he had a blast running and jumping around!

Ron, thank you for a wonderful afternoon! I’m so happy to have met you & Roscoe. I’ll talk to you soon!  :)

Irish Wolfhounds, Echo & Hooligan, in the Studio!

January 18th, 2016

I was so thrilled to meet Echo & Hooligan, two Irish Wolfhounds, for their photo session recently! These gentle giants are absolutely gorgeous dogs, and I have to be honest – I loved learning more about their breed from their mom, Karen! Irish Wolfhounds are an incredible, sweet breed with a long history, and as Karen has learned, when you walk around with two huge shaggy dogs, you start to become a breed ambassador for all the curious people you meet! They make quite an impression on their walks & outings, as you can probably imagine. (And trust me, if you & I have anything in common, you would stop everything you’re doing to meet these dogs if you saw them out & about!) So I was honored to be in their presence for a whole hour, haha – and we had a wonderful photo session together!

This is Hooligan, a five-year-old rescue – and this boy definitely has a mind of his own, haha! I really loved seeing his independent personality come through in the images.

And this is Echo! She’s about 1.5 years old, much younger than Hooligan – but her obedience & behavior are spectacular! She works closely with her mom in various competitions, and is amazingly responsive to her every move. (While still having a mind of her own, too, of course! That trait is pretty unanimous amongst Irish Wolfhounds!)

Oh these two. What a gorgeous pair.

Karen, thank you for introducing me to your two furry grandkids – and for the breed education along the way! I’m looking forward to seeing you again soon! :)

Coco the San Diego Terrier Mix – Pet Photography

January 15th, 2016

I knew this photo session with Coco, an adorable little terrier mix from San Diego, would be an interesting one as soon as her father told me: “I’ve never really treated her like a dog.” And while you may raise your eyebrows at that kind of statement, what I learned is that Coco & her dad are simply best friends. He treats her as one of his buddies – they’re companions. And I absolutely loved watching them interact – he spoke to her without a high-pitched babying voice, without sternness or commands, but simply with statements and questions. And while their conversations are verbally one-sided, Coco’s big, expressive eyes contain all kinds of responses. It was so cute to see her open her eyes wide and tilt her head when her dad asked “do you want a treat?” And while, of course, most dogs have a similar reaction when they see a treat bag, it was somehow different between Coco and her dad… I felt a deep respect between them, a bonding love, that only comes from years of friendship. And these are the relationships I live to photograph! I only wish this photo session didn’t have to be expedited due to Coco’s recent medical issues… but happily, she’s feeling good these days, and we all had a great time during our visit to the beach in La Jolla!

How much do you love her ears?! So big & flappy! She’s such a cutie.

Coco can really run! Granted, she runs away from the water instead of toward it, since she hates getting wet… but hey, that’s okay!

So, our photo session was originally scheduled during last week’s El Nino downpour. I’m pretty glad we waited for clear skies… ;)

Mike, thank you for introducing me to your adorable girl. I can’t wait to show you the rest of our photos soon! :)

Louisa the Standard Poodle! (San Diego, CA)

December 30th, 2015

I have to admit, I thought I wouldn’t have any more photo sessions in 2015… but this one snuck up on me at the last minute, haha! In order to accommodate a tricky military travel schedule (which I totally sympathize with, since Mr. Shamrell used to be in the Navy) I managed to fit Louisa the standard poodle into my schedule this week! She’s a gorgeous dog, with the softest cream coloring and the sweetest disposition. And she even brought her brother, Brutus, for emotional support! Haha, just kidding – he made an appearance in a few photos as well – but since Brutus is the older of the two dogs, he’d already enjoyed a photo session a few years ago, back when they were stationed up in Monterey and he was an “only dog”. So our session, with the focus on Louisa, was intended to make sure neither dog felt there was any favoritism going on! :)  And Louisa wore the spotlight exceptionally well – this pup can pose like a pro! I think Brutus must have briefed her on a few tips beforehand? And honestly, with her sweet eyes, long legs & soft curly fur, it’s hard to take a bad picture of Louisa… so she was an absolute treat to have in front of my lens!

Louisa sometimes gets mistaken for a labradoodle, her parents told me… what do you think? Is she clearly a standard poodle, or would you be confused too?

Louisa has a really interesting personality: she’s brave yet cautious. She’s quick to follow in the footsteps of her brother when investigating new things, deferring to his elder wisdom, but she’s also very cheerful and fun-loving! Not to mention smart, too. (Is this starting to sound like a singles ad?)

This pair… stop it. Stop it right now. TOO CUTE.

Okay, one more… just because those long, poodle legs are gorgeous! I promise I didn’t stretch them out in Photoshop, they really are that long! And don’t you love their amazing colors?

Thanks for introducing me to your sweet pups, Andrea & Todd! See you after your travels! (And Go Irish!)

Dippy, Lulu & Bentley – Rescue Dogs in San Diego, CA

December 2nd, 2015

Well I have to admit, I have a bit of a soft spot for this photo session… because it was my last one of 2015! And what a way to end this incredible year: with three adorable, full-of-personality dogs! This awesome little pack lives with their parents in the Kensington neighborhood of San Diego – just down the street from my studio – and we traveled to three very distinct parts of the city for our photo session! We started in the studio, then headed out to a local park, and then finished up at the beach – but I have to admit, the images from the park are a few of my early favorites as I’ve started to go through all the photos from the day, so their sneak peek is going to be park-exclusive! :)  I’m so excited to introduce you to these wonderful pups – all of whom are rescue dogs in San Diego!

This is Dippy, a serious contender for dog-with-the-cutest-name-ever. She enjoys her frisbee (as you can see), treats, and generally playing hard to get… let me tell you, this dog’s affection is hard-earned! She has the funniest “side-eye” look that she gives most people that try to get her attention (including me, and her mom) as if to say, “what are you doing?” I can’t quite put my finger on it, but Dippy seems to have a very keen understanding of what goes on around her… she’s so aware & in the moment!

Lulu is a cockapoo – and don’t let her adorable little face fool you, she’s a coyote fighter! That’s right! Her mom told me the most incredible story of how she literally fought off a coyote at a dog park one day! As a result of the incident, her neck isn’t in the best shape anymore, but overall she’s a healthy, happy (and surprisingly fierce!) dog! I didn’t see any of her ferocious spirit, but I did get to witness her beautiful zest for life and sheer contentedness when she’s with her family. Plus, she’s so cute! :)

This pointy puppy is Bentley! He’s the youngest one of the bunch, by several years, so he wins the award for Most Energetic Dog of the Day! He was beyond excited to visit the park and especially the beach – and honestly, it’s hard to take a bad photo of his handsome face. What a gorgeous pup… with a silly, ridiculous personality to boot! Bentley basically had me laughing for the entire session… he was always ready to fetch the frisbee one more time!

Okay, I lied. We’re not park-exclusive anymore. Here’s one beach photo of Dippy’s famous side-eye… just because. :)

Rebecca & Holly, thank you for such a fun afternoon! I hope you’re having a great trip, and I’m excited to see you both again soon!
