A Scottish French Bulldog Named Lola – Escondido, CA

Monday, November 18th, 2013

“She walked up to me and she asked me to dance… I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said Lola… L-o-l-a Lola…”

That song was stuck in my head the whooooole time as I drove up to Escondido to see Lola for her photo session!  But I didn’t meet Lola at a dance club; I met her mom at the Escondido Woofstock a few weeks ago, and Lola the French bulldog waddled into my studio for her Pre-Session Consultation shortly thereafter. She’s a cutie and a sweetheart, and I’m so glad she’s found a wonderful life with her parents! She had a rocky start – I’ll spare you the details because it just might have you doubting your faith in humanity – but she’s truly been rescued and given a second chance at life. Now she’s five years old – but I think she still looks like a puppy! We had an absolutely fabulous session – check it out!

We started at her house in Escondido – specifically, on top of her mom’s beautiful oriental rug!

Then we had a bit of downtime in the bedroom… *those eyes*

We had to go outside to the backyard for a bit, so Lola could hunt for turtles & rabbits… she keeps a tough patrol out there!

And then – are you ready for this? – she donned her family’s traditional Scottish tartan dress in nearby Felicita Park! Lola’s family is Scottish, and different colors & patterns of plaid are part of historical Scottish families’ heritage. Each family has their own design, and the pattern you see on Lola’s coat here is part of her family’s ancestry! It was custom-made for Lola, and I have to say, it fits her perfectly! How cute is she?!

Lola, thank you for being possibly the cutest French bulldog I’ve ever met. Beth, thank you for literally running all over Escondido with me! I can’t wait to see you both again soon! But in the meantime, I have plenty of work to do… I have a feeling your gallery is going to be extra-big! :)

Have a great week, everyone!

Pet Christmas Cards & Holiday Mini-Sessions!

Thursday, November 14th, 2013

The holidays are coming up quickly, and if you’re in the San Diego area & hoping to include your dog in your Christmas cards, I have a great solution for you!

Dexter’s Deli & I are hosting holiday mini-sessions, to give you a great family photo & help you get those Christmas cards in the mail!

Take a look at this year’s adorable card designs! (featuring Bailey, of course!)

christmas cards for pets

I’ll keep this short & sweet, so you can get all the details and get back to enjoying your – ahem – November. (hey, it never hurts to plan ahead!)

~   Saturday, November 16th I’ll be at Dexter’s Deli in Del Mar, CA, accepting 15-minute sessions for $85 each. They include plenty of shooting time to get a few photos of the whole family, a few of just your dog(s), and any other arrangements of people/pets you’d like. You’ll walk away with a high-res, printable digital file to make your own cards, or you can order the custom-designed cards above for a small additional fee. Call the store to reserve your time slot! (if there are any left!) Their number is 858-792-3707.

~   (Tip for regulars: tell them you’ve been to Dexter’s before… There’s a special deal for loyal customers!)

~   Saturday & Sunday, December 7th & 8th I’ll be at my studio (3251 Adams Ave, Suite C, San Diego, CA 92116). These 15-minute mini-sessions will be $95 each and come with either two digital images or 12 custom-designed Christmas cards! The normal price for a session like this would be over $130, but it’s the holidays (my first Christmas in San Diego!) and I want to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to make a Christmas card that’ll win the spot of honor on their relatives’ fridges. :)

(As opposed to Dexter’s ivy wall background, studio photos will look more like this:)

Questions? Concerns? Email me, allison@allisonshamrell.com, or leave a comment on this blog post.

I hope to see you & your dogs either this Saturday, or in December! :)

(Just a quick footnote: I only have a couple of spots left for full-length sessions in time for the holidays, as well… and those clients would have access to the custom card designs shown above too! So if you think you might want more than a digital file & cards, definitely send me an email and we’ll chat about getting a date on our calendars!)

Earning the “Pet” in Pet Photography: Maddie the Dog & Tuck the Cockatiel!

Tuesday, November 12th, 2013

When I meet someone and mention that I do professional pet photography, they often ask me: what’s the weirdest pet you’ve ever photographed? And I have to disappoint them and admit that I’ve never worked with reptiles, sugar gliders, goats or capybaras. One day, maybe – I would love to! – but my pet photography expertise has just extended to dogs, cats, and a few horses in the past.

Well this week I was able to add another species to that list! I photographed my very first cockatiel! His name is Tuck, and he’s known to his mom (and their neighbors, probably) as the loudest cockatiel in southern California! When we were working with his sister, Maddie the dog, he would sit in his cage, cheeping & chirping & yelling away! Cockatiels can talk, like parrots, but “he talks on his own time,” as his mom says, so I never got to hear him say actual words… but that’s okay, because he was actually a great little poser for my camera!

Isn’t he a cutie? He’s got every shade of grey in those feathers…

And of course, let me introduce you to Tuck’s canine sister, Maddie! She’s a total sweetheart, but unfortunately she’s been in & out of chemotherapy treatments recently, amongst other issues… let’s just say she spends way too much time at the vet. So I was happy to provide this big-eared girl with an afternoon of playtime!

Her mom booked The Great Dane Package, because Miss Maddie deserves to have plenty of time being spoiled as the center of attention. But since she’s older, and moves a bit slower, and grows more tired than most dogs… we decided to split up the session into two meetings. I don’t normally do this, and it certainly wouldn’t make sense for a Beagle Package or even a Dalmatian Package, but Maddie’s age & demeanor called for an exception in this case. Her mom knows her best, of course, and suggested the idea – and I quickly agreed. And it was the right call: as we were wrapping up the first half of our session, Maddie slowed waaaaay down and seemed ready for a nice, long nap. (I can’t blame her, either: it’s a common side effect of photo sessions! haha!)

Maddie was excited to show me this gorgeous little field of flowers in her neighborhood! (I swear, she practically looks like a different dog from each angle!)

Leslie, I had a great time with you & your “kids”! Thank you for patiently answering my constant stream of questions about cockatiels, haha… I can’t wait to have you & Maddie here in the studio soon!

My Radio Interview About the Photography Business!

Wednesday, November 6th, 2013

Right before I was about to leave my house – well, let’s be honest, 5 minutes after I should’ve left my house – there I was, running around and stressing about what to wear. That’s right, I’m the kind of person who worries about what clothes to wear for a radio interview! Haha! What can I say, I was nervous! I’d never been on the radio before, much less been interviewed in a segment all about my photography business, so my nerves were definitely acting up. Luckily, my husband had the day off work, so he agreed to come to the station with me and make sure I didn’t wimp out completely.

I had been asked to be on San Diego’s Finest Business by the show’s executive producer, which is an hour-long radio show that covers 3-4 local San Diego companies, so listeners can learn about what they do, their philosophies & all about the people behind the business. This producer had heard about what I do and thought it’d be a unique business for her listeners to learn about – and I’m glad she did! I’m sure plenty of people have never even heard of the pet photography business (it’s a pretty specialized niche!), so I (nervously) agreed to spread the word. It all happened at WS Radio, which is San Diego’s leader in internet radio, and I was interviewed by Jack Warren, who has almost 15 years in the radio industry and also happens to be a former retail photography business owner in the Pacific Northwest.

I wasn’t sure of the protocol & how much time I’d have, so I didn’t bring my camera. I didn’t hesitate to take a few iPhone photos during downtimes, though!

Here’s the interviewee that was scheduled before me, a realtor, in Studio A (where I was interviewed too).

Ken took a few photos of my during the interview… haha!

Me and Jack, after the interview:
(aaahh, iPhone photo quality…)

Here’s a link to the site with all the interviews from the day’s show. I recommend giving them all a listen; San Diego is home to some pretty incredible business owners.

All right… since you asked nicely, here’s a link to my interview. (Gah! Don’t judge my “um”s!)

I was happy to talk a bit about my past in sports photography, but I hope I did a good job of explaining what pet photography is and why my clients (and I) love it so much! Let me know what you think of the interview in the comments!

After we finished up, Ken & I went just down the road in Mira Mesa to a brewery for a pint of craft beer… a celebratory drink for my “bravery”, haha!

Thanks for reading! :)

Happy Howl-o-ween: Bailey the German Beer Maiden

Wednesday, October 30th, 2013

Today, on this ancient day of history & folklore, there is a tale that must be told. A tale of tradition, greatness, and the struggle to uphold them both. And perhaps that tale is best told through the eyes of just a single character in our story…

halloween dog mission brewery

Bailey is a common beer maid at the town brewery. She was born & raised amongst the wheat & barley stores in the back of the brewery, and grew up learning to distinguish different varieties of hops from only their aroma; this brewery is and always will be her home.

She is happy here. Her pleasures are simple: listening to the grains ping against the copper vats each morning, running her paws over the smooth wooden surface of the bar that’s been worn down by centuries of visiting beer enthusiasts, feeling empty glasses fill to the brim and grow heavy with cool, foamy craft beer. Truly, Bailey is happy to greet her guests each day, and they enjoy her cheerful service behind the bar.

But times are not always easy at the brewery. Sometimes, whole shipments of hops are lost to thieves. The local brewery has had a successful past, but money has never been tighter, and sometimes Bailey can sense the pressure of an economy that almost feels like it’s evolving past the age-old craft of brewing.

But Bailey knows that a steady determination – and a positive attitude – are the keys to continuing her happy existence in the way she’s always known.

When times are tough, Bailey reminds herself: enjoy the little pleasures in life! Every smiling face that comes through the doors is another opportunity to make a friend, build a relationship, and strengthen the community that upholds the brewery through all the tough times. So she makes sure to greet each visitor with her cheerful smile!

Every morning, Bailey gets dressed in the traditional clothing of her ancestors. She takes comfort in the familiar folds of the dirndl, its cheery white blouse and deep brown apron skirt, and the handmade headscarf that keeps her unruly fur out of her eyes. She herself stitched the red threads into her outfit, to add a bit of color to the surrounding brewery’s rich, deep chestnut tones.

And sometimes, at the end of a hectic day, Bailey loves to enjoy a pint as she unwinds. While her favorite brew has always been the traditional pale ale, occasionally Bailey enjoys a stronger taste of hops from one of the brewery’s IPAs.

Howl-o-ween

Bailey’s counterparts – all of them men – don’t always include her in discussions of the brewery’s direction & future. At times, Bailey wishes she could join in these conversations. She has so many ideas from watching the day-in-day-out hustle & bustle from behind the bar… so many ideas that could improve their service & lessen their often-overwhelming workload. But at other times, she purely wishes to join in for the friendship & camaraderie. It’s not always easy being the sole female bartender.

But Bailey values her solitary time, too. When she’s not behind the bar serving guests, she can think deeply about the world, the brewery, and her place in both.

So despite her everyday worries, Bailey truly loves living at the brewery and tending the bar for its guests! She’s at home here!

 Happy Howl-o-ween!

Big thanks to Mission Brewery in downtown San Diego, CA! And have a very happy Howl-o-ween, from Bailey (whose real job is to be an intern at Allison Shamrell Pet Photography)!
