Escondido Pet Photography: Lucy the Standard Poodle

Monday, December 2nd, 2013

Just before the big holiday weekend, I headed north to meet Lucy & her family for our Escondido pet photography session! I love working in Escondido, to be honest; the landscape can go from lush greenery to desert-like & dusty within just a few feet, which makes for plenty of interesting backdrops that we don’t have to travel very far to find. And then add in the beautiful houses, cute neighborhoods & dog-friendly culture, and the town is pretty much a pet photographer’s dream! I’ve been going to Escondido quite a bit lately, and I’m definitely enjoying it up there!

(And this Escondido pet photography session was especially unique for me, too, because the very last session I had photographed before this was with an apricot-colored standard poodle – and THIS session ALSO featured an apricot-colored standard poodle! How crazy is that?! I hardly ever photograph two of the same breed of dog in one month, let alone in back-to-back sessions! And even then, if it happens in a short period of time, the breed is typically a much more common one, like a labrador or golden retriever. Standard poodles certainly aren’t as common – much less meeting two with the same rare coloring! Hmmm… is the universe trying to tell me something? Should Bailey’s future brother or sister be a standard poodle? haha!)

But despite the physical similarities, Lucy isn’t at all like her fellow poodle Jackie in Solana Beach. Lucy is 9 years old and, unfortunately, has spent far too much time at the vet recently. She’s had more than her fair share of medical issues, and after a misdiagnosis & a few wrong turns, Lucy is now on the right medication & getting stronger every day! During our session, her dad commented that Lucy probably wouldn’t have been able to go on the walk we took & handle all our activity if we had gotten together just two weeks ago. Even so, keep in mind: I always tailor my sessions to the dog(s) I’m working with; with puppies & high-energy breeds we run around most of the time and keep a fast tempo, because that’s who they are! With Lucy, though, and senior dogs, it’s important to go much slower and let the star of the show determine the pace of the session. And since running around isn’t what Lucy needs right now, being still on the mend, we had a quite relaxing session of laying around, taking a slow walk, and then laying around some more! So I’m glad Lucy’s strength had returned for our photo session – even if we didn’t ask for for too much “activity” after all. We started under her parents’ orange trees…

Lucy’s mom told me the most adorable story: when Lucy first saw these trees, years ago, she thought the oranges were tennis balls! So she’d sit beneath them, look up, and wait for a “ball” to fall down to her! How cute is that?!

We were so lucky to get this beautiful natural light during our session; I love how it lights up Lucy’s fur like a big bright halo! And this is one of Lucy’s two feline siblings, here on the right; they made a quick appearance near the end of our session, just for a minute, and only because they felt like it. They’re cats, after all!

Here’s Lucy with her human sisters, Rachael & Lauryn. 3 girls – aren’t they sweet?

Remember how I mentioned finishing our session by laying around? Wasn’t kidding. (Lucy may have even snuck in a nap!)

Okay, I have to confess, I saved the best for last (in my opinion)… I typically don’t publish photos of people in my sneak peeks, just because the star of my sessions are always the pets. (Plus, I typically would want to see a photo of myself before it goes on the internet!) But this photo – well, it just has to be an exception! Look at this GORGEOUS family!!

I hope you all can forgive me for posting your photo without checking with you first – but in my opinion, each one of you looks GREAT!

Teresa, I hope you enjoyed your extra-large sneak peek; I can’t wait to see you & Mike again soon! Rachel & Lauren: it was an absolute pleasure to meet you, thank you for joining us! And Lucy – stay strong, girl.  *hugs*

Jackie, the Beautiful Solana Beach Standard Poodle

Wednesday, November 27th, 2013

This morning I was thrilled to have the opportunity to do something special: a surprise session, for a family & their standard poodle named Jackie! That’s right – Jackie’s mom had no idea that I was showing up today, much less that we’d be working together to create dozens of photos of her gorgeous dog! This was all planned by a member of the family; I was contacted by Jackie’s owner’s daughter (which makes she & Jackie “sisters”, I suppose!), who wanted to surprise her mother with a session. And I love being sneaky – surprise photo sessions are soooo much fun! haha! So after the surprise was revealed, Jackie’s family & I went to play fetch in the neighborhood for a while, and after getting out the fetch-wiggles, we settled in for a few family portraits. The experience was a total shock to Jackie’s mom, and I can’t wait to show her all of our photos!

Here’s Jackie! Patiently (or sometimes not so patiently) waiting for the next throw of the tennis ball, and then sprinting back with it! This dog is serious about her fetch; for example, she’s all about her one specific ball. She has no interest in other dogs’ balls, and she won’t leave the park if the ball somehow gets lost in the bushes – she’s just got to get it back! Oh, and my favorite part of how she played was that she’d bring the ball back to a different person every time it was thrown. It was like she wanted to involve all of us in the game! Gosh – how nice of you, Jackie! (I didn’t know standard poodles were so community-oriented!)

It took a while, but we tuckered her out and eventually meandered back to the house. Then we relaxed in the yard – but that ball always had to be close by!

Emily, thank you for coordinating a fantastic surprise – and Lee, I’m glad you finally made it into town! Claudia, I’m so excited to see you again & show you all your photos – thank you for a fabulous morning! :)

Del Mar Pet Photography featuring Charlie Brown the Labradoodle

Monday, November 25th, 2013

I’ve been doing more & more Del Mar pet photography lately, and I was thrilled to meet Charlie Brown at his beautiful house just off Camino Del Mar the other day! His house is pretty much a photographer’s dream: the yard’s fences are covered up by a variety of gorgeous greenery, the yard itself is well-kept & has plenty of room to run around, and there’s even a view of the ocean from the guest house! Not to mention, Charlie himself is a super-sweet dog, a labradoodle and just a ball of love. He was happy to pose for my camera (especially if I shared my squeaky tennis ball with him) and has a wonderful, even-keeled personality. I couldn’t have been happier, and we had gorgeous light as the icing on the cake! Perfect!

This is Charlie Brown! (Don’t you love that face?!) I met him at Dexter’s Deli during Christmas Mini-Sessions, and his mom decided she’d like a few more personal photos around their yard. So Charlie was more than happy to show me around!

See what I mean about that perfect light? Gah! I love it!

Charlie was also happy to show me his parents’ front door – how beautiful is this?! The rainbow tile pattern, the wooden dolphin door handles… I couldn’t get enough of their fun, eclectic decor.

Charlie, thank you for being such a great subject – even if you only paid attention to me for the sake of my squeaky tennis ball! Janet & Nigel, I had a wonderful afternoon with you both; thank you so much for letting me spend more time with your handsome boy.

In-Home Pet Photography in Del Mar: Molly the Mini Poodle

Thursday, November 21st, 2013

I absolutely love doing in-home pet photography sessions! My clients typically don’t have much of a problem choosing locations for where they’d like their sessions to happen; they’re quick to pick spots that are meaningful to them & their dogs, which is always a good idea in my book. But when, every so often, a client isn’t sure where to go or what might be the best place to visit, I’m always quick to suggest their own house!

But then, most of the time, I’m told something like “oh it’s too messy” or “I don’t have a really big house” or “we don’t get much natural light”. Well, I say, it’s a good thing NONE of those statements are problems! I work in messy houses all the time – let’s be honest, this is real life – and I focus on clients’ dogs, not the dust bunnies or piles of clutter in the corner. (I always say, as long as you’re not a contender for a future episode of Hoarders, you have nothing to worry about!) “Big” houses aren’t necessary either; I’ll just ask to shoot where your dog spends time. We don’t need 20 different sofas to take photos on! And finally, natural light is a luxury, I’ve learned. That’s why I’ve invested in a set of portable lights that I bring with me to lighten up any room! So at the end of the day, I’m happy to work in almost any house, and at home is where your dogs are most comfortable & relaxed anyway. Plus – it’s so personal! It’s your house, your dog, your life – why not document it all?

So as you can see, I have my reasons for being a big fan of in-home pet photography sessions. And when that home is in gorgeous Del Mar, with a big landscaped backyard? Well, sign me up! Haha! That was exactly the case when I met Molly the miniature poodle at her parents’ house. Del Mar has more than enough gorgeous vistas to photograph around town, but Molly’s favorite place is her own backyard! Because that’s where she gets to play fetch until she drops!

Don’t let her breed fool you: this girl is an athlete!

After we played fetch so much that it tuckered poor little Molly out, she was happy to calmly sit & pose for treats in all the pretty spots around her parents’ backyard. (we just needed to work out the tennis-ball-wiggles first!)

Molly, it was absolutely lovely to meet you & explore all the nooks & crannies of your backyard with you! Debby & Midge, I simply can’t wait to show you the rest of your photos; I’ll see you both again soon!  :)

The Second Half of Maddie’s Photo Session: In the Studio & the Park

Wednesday, November 20th, 2013

Oh, Maddie! I love this sweet face. And I got to see it again because she visited the studio for the second half of her photo session on Monday! Yay!

If you didn’t see Maddie’s first sneak peek, check it out here. She’s a happy little dog that deserves to be spoiled, and I saw her (& her cockatiel brother!) for the first half of their photo session last week, but since my Great Dane Package comes with more time than this old girl had the energy for in one day, we split up her photo session over two different days to make it a bit more manageable. So she trotted into my studio on Monday, happy & full of energy, and I knew we had made the right choice in giving her time to “recuperate” from last week, haha!

I love black dogs on gray backgrounds. Love love love.

We even spent a little while on the black backdrop, for a bit of drama… I haven’t done this since photographing a couple of black labradors last year, so I was thrilled to get Maddie into the “void”!  :)   (My apologies if certain monitor settings don’t display this photo the way it was intended to be shown from computer to computer.)

And the old girl had plenty of energy left for a run-around in the park, so we visited nearby Presidio Park in central San Diego for more portraits. Both of these are personal favorites of mine… that happy face just beams, and right there with her mom is exactly where Maddie belongs.

Maddie, you’re a champ. Leslie, I’ll see you soon for an epic Ordering Session – I know you’re a pretty analytical & decisive person, but I hope you’re prepared for the massive gallery of photos comin’ your way!  I can’t wait to show them all to you!  :)
