San Diego Dog Photography Portfolio Video

Friday, July 5th, 2013

Amidst all the surfing dogs and studio renovations, I’ve been working on several behind-the-scenes ways to introduce my business (and myself) to the San Diego area lately. I thought about how I’ve been showing photos from big events lately, and posting iPhone-quality studio construction photos… not exactly the kinds of things I normally like to share! I mean, it’s fun for a change, but I usually like to control every aspect of my photos: the setting, the light, the colors, the atmosphere, etc. And honestly, I haven’t had that kind of control since my last session. So I could just post more photos from my past sessions… but I thought of something much more FUN!

I made a video of my portfolio! These are some of my absolute-favorite photos I’ve ever taken! Not all my favorites are here, of course – I couldn’t fit something from every session into one song, and I just like too many photos, haha! But this is a great taste of my natural, playful & soulful pet photography style, and the song it’s set to is SUPER fun! So, without further ado… enjoy!  :)

I told you the song is excellent!  :)  In case you’d like to share this with anyone you know, or even just post it to your Facebook page, you can find the original video here or share my post about it here. (Or, to take a slower look at my portfolio, see my portrait galleries on my main website.) Thanks for watching, and happy sharing!

Loews Surf Dog Competition 2013 – Imperial Beach, San Diego, CA

Monday, June 24th, 2013

What an incredible day at the beach! Sun, sand, and surfing dogs – add in a few doggles and you can’t beat that combination! Saturday was the 8th Annual Loews Surf Dog Competition, and let me tell you, if you weren’t there, you missed out! The streets of Imperial Beach were jam-packed with cars for miles in every direction; I was shocked at how many people & dogs were there. Then again, this was my first-ever dog surfing competition, so I didn’t know what I was getting myself into… still, I think anyone would have said “wow” upon seeing thousands of human & canine spectators in one place! It was awesome to see everyone supporting the dogs out there in the water; there were huge rounds of applause and cheers for any dog that successfully rode in to shore! And of course plenty of “oooh”s and laughs at the wipeouts! Check out a few of my favorite photos from the event!

This is Abbie Girl, an Australian kelpie & the champion of the small dog category! She was a total pro.

Sometimes I found the people’s faces just as amusing as the dogs’! Heehee!

And let’s give a little credit to the people out there! I think the dogs may have actually had a pretty easy time, just standing on those boards… their human helpers were always in prime position to get smacked by the waves!

This guy was such a goofball – and a great surfer, too!

These dogs are smart, they know when to jump off & save themselves! Haha! There were lots of funny wipeouts!

I was SO impressed by the dogs that actually shared surfboards!! These two worked the board like it was nothing.

Uhhh… bird costumes?? What? Haha, these three definitely had an extra challenge out there.

Here’s another reason the event was so exciting: we were in the presence of celebrities!  This is Ricochet, a service dog that surfs with people with disabilities! She’s an incredible surfer and a beautiful spirit. Check out her website here, and if the videos there don’t make you cry or at least tear up, well, you’re stronger than me. She also has a super-active Facebook page!

And here’s the one-and-only Tillman! He’s mostly famous for skateboarding (check out the video that made him famous; it has 20 million hits, no big deal) but he was out there on a surfboard on Saturday! He won the large dog competition!

Dogs of all different shapes & sizes were out there..

The day was gorgeous, of course – it’s San Diego! (gorgeous enough to give me a bit of a sunburn, unfortunately. haha oh well.)

I found it fascinating that there were photographers out there, in the waves, with waterproof casings for their cameras! That is DEFINITELY where I want to be next year!!

This photo sums up the spirit of the day, I think – goooo surf dogs! The cheers were so loud! :)

Whew, that was a lot of photos! And believe it or not, these were just my favorite images from the whole event! If you’d like to see more, or if your dog surfed and you’d like to purchase a print or digital image, visit the event gallery here: http://proofs.allisonshamrell.com.

Oh, and here’s something fun: my photos from the competition were internationally published! Here’s the story from the UK Daily Mail, which asked for my photos to include in their article! I thought I’d left the world of journalism photography behind a few years ago… apparently not! :)

I hope you enjoyed seeing all the photos of these talented dogs! If you’ve never been here before, welcome! You’re visitng my blog, which is where I post about recent events (like this one) and sessions. My website is different; it’s where you can check out my whole portfolio and find info about a session with your dogs! Last but not least, my Facebook page is a pretty fun place too! :) Take a look, click “like”, and you’ll get to see more fun photos like these in your newsfeed!

Thanks for visiting!  :)

Setting Up My New Studio in San Diego

Wednesday, June 19th, 2013

This is probably “Part 1” in a long (well, hopefully not TOO long!) series of blog posts! I’m ridiculously excited about my new studio in San Diego, and I’ve been working REALLY hard to get it set up & ready for business ASAP!

(I know, more iPhone photos. Have you EVER seen this many iPhone photo posts from me?? It ok though: the movers brought a bunch of my office supplies, and I’m pretty sure my card reader is in there somewhere!! I promise things will be back to normal soon!)

I spent the weekend running from store to store, trying to stock up on supplies & decor. Pictured is just one of, like, 5 Home Depot receipts. Big ones. I’m ready to accept their Customer of the Week award.

Yesterday (Tuesday) was a big day! We finally got everything (we think) we needed from various stores, and got to start working inside the studio. We went through the first roll of painter’s tape pretty quickly…

20130618-204420.jpg

Taping job by yours truly. I may have missed my calling as a light-switch-painter’s-tape-master.

20130618-230943.jpg

And then – the most exciting part of Bailey’s morning – the movers came! They delivered all the furniture, supplies, etc. I need for my office and to participate in upcoming dog events! It’s starting to feel more like “my studio” with all my things in it!

20130618-231031.jpg

After finishing up with the movers and doing allllllll the taping, we needed a lunch break. We headed a block down the street and found a great place with incredible burgers, which came with fries that Bailey enjoyed very much! (yes, we feed our dog food from the table, I know I know, but she’s okay with it and so are we.) At one point, she missed a fry we dropped down to her and it somehow bounced all the way under the next table – and she was the most pitiful thing! She just stared at it wistfully. My husband took this photo of our sad puppy. What a silly dog.

After lunch, it was time to get to painting!

Here’s a sneak peek at some of the decor… the bird is my little tribute to my hometown, Portland. Anyone know why? :)

20130618-231808.jpg

And LOOK! Laminate floors!! We’re actually putting nice flooring in a large part of the space, to make sure I can shoot my studio sessions in that area. I’m nervous about the process but we’re told it’s easy to do… I feel like a first-time homebuyer without ever having bought a home. (Is that a good thing?)

20130618-231853.jpg

It’s coming along!! I hope you enjoyed these “before” photos, haha! More are on their way… let’s hope everything keeps going as smoothly as it has up till now! :)  Thanks for reading!

Bailey in San Diego

Friday, June 14th, 2013

So, I feel like I haven’t written many blog/Facebook posts lately. Or at least not a proportionate amount compared to all the activity that’s going on over here! To tell you the truth, I’ve been working hard doing lots of “behind-the-scenes” things, like getting ready to make friends with other San Diego pet-related business owners, meeting other local pet photographers, and exploring the local neighborhoods to get a feel for what’s where. And while I haven’t been meeting lots of new dogs lately, like I normally do when sessions are in full swing, I’ve been spending plenty of time with Bailey. I love my girl so much – she just turned 4 on Monday! It was a great day and we didn’t have the slight fiasco of Birthday #3. We even spent the weekend with her doing extra-special fun things, like visiting the Coronado Dog Beach and joining my extended family in Los Angeles for a barbecue!

I would post a new photo of Bailey at Coronado, but in the moving chaos, I can’t find my card reader. GAH. So here’s an oldie but a goodie :)

san diego dog socialization

However, I have a confession to make.

In the first year we had Bailey, I’d like to think we did a pretty great job at socializing her. When we adopted her, she was 6 months old – found in the middle of nowhere when she was 4 months old – and we took her to the dog beach most Sundays, constantly met other dogs on our walks, and generally took her with us whenever we could. She was a happy, social dog!

But after that first year, we moved farther away from that dog beach, and pretty far (a solid 25-minute drive) from dog parks too. We were lucky enough to move into a neighborhood with several playful dogs, and Bailey got along fabulously with them! But those dogs became 95% of her dog-to-dog interactions. I’ll admit it – we got lazy. With long walks in a neighborhood where we could let her off-leash and run, what could possibly be wrong with a few less trips to the dog beach? So we thought.

san diego social dog

Bailey has been stressed since we moved: she spent 3 whole days in a car, and we’d never boarded her before but she spent almost a week at Bark Boulevard while we visited Portland. So who can blame her for being stressed? But I’ve noticed in the trips that we’ve taken to San Diego dog parks so far that she’s not getting along with other pups as well as she used to. And maybe a dog behaviorist can help me out with the “why” behind this, but she seems to be quite particular about other dogs that she simply doesn’t like. And then she gives them a hard time: barkling, growling, snarling, etc. She never attacks – my gosh that would be horrible! – just makes it very clear that the other dog is not her friend.

It doesn’t happen often; probably with 5% of all the dogs she meets. If that. I certainly don’t mean to say that she’s lost all her social skills! She usually loves to meet other dogs, and she typically plays just fine with new friends! But every dog parent wants their pup to be social and sweet with everyone they meet… And as much as I’d like to play innocent and say “I have no idea why she’s like this all of a sudden”, I’m pretty sure all the evidence is right in front of me. Less socialization over the past couple of years. Stress of moving across the country and all the chaos that comes with it. In general, just less-than-ideal situations for my girl.

san diego dog

I feel guilty for how things have gone, so I’m making San Diego a new beginning! I’ve resolved to take Bailey out to dog parks and beaches MUCH more often than I used to! And since San Diego is incredibly dog-friendly, we can take her out to restaurants and more places too! It’s going to be great; we’ll get to spend more time with her and hopefully she’ll decide that more & more dogs are her friends. I’ll keep you updated on how it goes; I know nothing will happen overnight but I’m trying to create a pattern of lots of positive interactions. Hopefully my knowledge of dog psychology will help the process along.

I’ll always respect Bailey’s limits. I can promise you that. But until she tells me she’s had enough, I’m going to socialize the crap out of her. :)

We Made It to San Diego!

Thursday, May 30th, 2013

As many of you know, I announced that my family would be moving to San Diego, California not too long ago. Well, it’s been a whirlwind, but we safely made it out here! And in way less time than I would have thought possible!

(Are you ready for a blog post full of iPhone photos? Try not to cringe – you know I don’t do this to you very often!!)

We packed our car FULL and set off on the open road… Bailey was excited to go!

20130530-162410.jpg

Of course, after a while, the excitement faded. (for all of us, haha!)

20130530-162940.jpg

We drove over several state lines… this one was the first…

20130530-162910.jpg

We spent parts of three different days in Texas. This was my breakfast for the last day, and it wasn’t even at a Texas-themed restaurant. We had a basic hotel continental breakfast… but state pride runs deep.

20130530-163017.jpg

And then… finally… we made it!! Practically our first stop was the Del Mar dog beach! Bailey was THRILLED to get the heck out of the car. I posted another photo on the Facebook page that shows a bit more of the dog beach… she LOVED it there! There are more dog beaches to explore, but we’re definitely coming back to this one!

20130530-162111.jpg

We also took a trip the next day to the Rancho Penasquitos dog park, which is located right near where we’re temporarily staying (before we find a more permanent house).  Apparently the “panorama” feature on iPhones turns moving dogs into 8-legged monsters, haha!

20130530-162147.jpg

I’m sure I’ll have MUCH more to tell you as I explore San Diego with Bailey. And prettier, non-iPhone photos, too! This is the start of something great, I can just feel it. Thanks for reading & stay tuned! :)
